Need for Speed Shift 2 – PC DLCs Coming for Free

While owners of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions of Slightly Mad Studios’ Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed title are already enjoying two additional download content packs for the title, PC version ownersare still waiting for the extra content to become available.

The patience of the PC users will be rewarded though as EA has announced that both the Legends DLC pack and the Speedhunters pack will be available for free on EA’s Origin.com download site.

The two packs will be available starting June 30, that also means that the second PC version patch for Shift 2 Unleashed has to be released by then as it will be adding DLC functionality to the title.

While the Legends pack introduces 14 brand new historical racing cars and five new tracks to Shift 2 Unleashed, the Speedhunters pack adds drag racing and standing mile competition to the title.

    Wow. Worth the wait, no?

  • Markuz

No updates on the AI aggresion and “intelligence”? On some tracks some AI just “loses” it and gets trapped. Also, when they’re lapped (on long/endurance races) they move out of the way but they usually go to the grass. Of course there’s the silly uber aggressive AI that behaves more like drunk online newbies than racers.

  • Ernie

…and the DLC packs come to PC for free! 8-)

  • Gulyo

    yesss …

  • arronski

OMG, i love EA, will not slate you anymore hehe.

  • Nismo

I think so yes. I’m still enjoying hotlapping SHIFT2 although the Career is tiresome, it’s a great hotlapping game. Add some classic beasts, whats not to like

  • Silly(c)One

Yeah, I seem to get the latter type all the time…
Last time I gave NFS2U a try, I got frustrated by that stupid AI after 15 tries on the same dumb circuit… They still didn’t solve the swinging (at least for me) and coming from iRacing or even DiRT3, that games is not enjoyable at all… Too bad coz they had it all, but lost their souls to the big capital, once again… DLC, Free or not, who gives a shit anyways ? The harm is done.
Actually, I have much more hopes now with Grid 2, as I always much prefered EGO’s FFB over NFS.
    *rant over*

  • Hompe

Shift 2 wasnt much fun racing around but could be a fun drag racing game :)  bring it on ea!

  • Johnny Doe

Yes AI is really not great. I sometime find their behaviour too extreme. Either your lapping them they go straight in the grass to let you pass as you say. Or if in the same lap there are 2 cases, but almost always the car will take the interior of the turn to prevent you from passing. This manoeuver is OK, but not really if they slam you when you are already at their door. THe other behaviour is I get outside of the best lane to let you pass.

Another thing is that the AI is really slow to react causing often crashes or sometimes keeping the lane whatever is stopped on the way.

SMS worked on a new harder AI level for the game and wanted to include it in patch 2, but EA did not want it based on the fact they did not want to spend additionnal money on the testing of it. However I don’t think this was really elaborate, mainly faster AI I guess.

Same goes with a new AA mode that was added for PC that would solve some scaling issues.

They had to remove all these changes from patch 2.

That’s why they are working on a different way of funding their future games.

    But I digress now

  • Uff

Damned, I wrote the same thing but it took me too long to reply. :D Johnny is right.

  • Ricoo

Yesterday I played GT Legends during 2 hours and I asked myself why the hell did I bought NFSU2, GT Legends is so much better… :/

But anyway thanks SMS and EA for free DLC.

  • Marc Lavry Cohn

    THANK YOU EA!!!!! :)

  • Kris Baxter

Nope, get Race, find the GTL mod, get the Retro DLC from Simbin, add any tracks you can, custom championship with the GTL and retro pack, even better than GTL.

  • Ross Siggers

For a second I was going to flame you for comparing Underground 2 and GTL…then I realised you just got the abbreviation wrong xD

  • Ricoo

    No.

I have all Race07 addons (except WTCC 2010 ) but GT Legends is still better.

  • Ricoo

    NFSSU2 ;)

  • Ricoo

    or NFSS2U maybe

  • Jorge Araujo

    Yay! SMS freakin rulez! <img src=”extra/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/img/smiley-smile.gif” title=”Smile” border=”0″ alt=”Smile”/>

  • Jorge Araujo

    Yay! SMS freakin rulez! :D

  • Richard Osborne

    Awesome news yo!

  • StarFoXySxv550

GT Legends is truely an awesome game, but the AI really isn’t that great for offline play.

  • StarFoXySxv550

Wait… SMS are going to part company with EA?

There’s no emoticon for “shocking news”

  • StarFoXySxv550

I will. I hate EA more and more increasingly…

    1. Constantly releasing garbage driving games way too often, (NFS: The run anyone? oh please) Shift seems to be the exception here. Take a rest break EA, give your (group of 5 or 6) racing Devs a chance to put out quality products instead of the first thing written on the brainstorm whiteboard. it’s not just the driving games, see any EA sport games for further details.

    2. Cheap marketing tactics: Slating other Devs games to promote their own is not a good look (the official vid comparing Forza/SU2/GT5 was laughable), feel free to talk up your own games rather than talking down others in the public eye.

    3. This ridiculous *exclusive* Porsche licensing agreement, before long any game in the same sub-genre of a NFS title will never even have a shot at including this marque in the content. I for one won’t buy a NFS product just because it includes the Marque, I’ll buy it because it’s a good product and for that reason only. I believe the latest victim of this is SimBin. For this reason I hope the low sales numbers that hit NFS:U2 infect ever other NFS title to follow.

While it’s nice to get free content, don’t be fooled. It was probably too expensive to distribute the content via a pay system which would combat piracy, so rather than lose face, potential future revenue from PC owners and also a virtual burning at the stake, it was distributed for free. Wise move EA.

Why can’t SMS nail their games right? I like the game’s driving part and feel but its AI just ain’t fun. Its career parts are also very shallow. After finishing the “checklist” career I can’t find any more reason to play it. Perhaps I may buy a new car then just do hotlaps but that’s just meh.

I’d rather have a no-clear goal career (I mean the goals you set are your own, the game just tracks or sets it up for you, like GTR, Race or even F1 2010’s ‘I want to be 7 time WDC!’) or grind for cash a’la Gran Turismo. Checklists offer too much instant but shallow gratification. Have an AI which is actually fun to race with then SMS could’ve had a classic.

In GTR 2, setting up 10 lap races with you on the back of an AI grid then trying your best to get a good result never gets old. In S2U surviving the AI first corner mayhem and restarting the race after being “disrespected” for the 10th time is tiresome, annoying and makes the game really cheap.

Since everybody already knows that EA is a devil-cash-milker SMS should’ve at least set the AI right the first time instead of having this “EA won’t allow it due to cash/resource BS”.

  • Markuz

So after finishing this new “checklist”, what’s more to S2U? What’s wrong with EA/SMS? A single-player focused racing game with an AI that ain’t fun to race with? Pepper us with night races but with AI out for your blood? Come on! Night racing graphics is a good technical acheivement but it won’t save their game from this horrible drunk AI you can’t stand racing with whatever the difficulty level is.

DLC’s are nice especially when free but this game’s AI really needs fixing!

… I wonder how I’d react if the drunk AI slams and spins me in the drag racing part. It’s not impossible knowing the game’s psycho AI.

  • StarFoXySxv550

I forgot one more EA dislike

Dedicated servers: Dedicated severs are great service from EA, one that not many are willing to replicate/provide, So praise EA for that and all is well….. until they decided that one day the game is too old and nobody is playing online anymore (despite the but loyal following) and pull the plug. Example: NFS World, why create a 100% online experience only to leave no way to play it? lol

  • Ricoo

Compared to Shift 2, GT Legends AI is rather good… But it is true that Race 07 AI is better.

  • Kris Baxter

hence why I said the GTL mod for race with the retro pack and a custom championship is better than GTL, better AI and the offline custom championship.

  • Maciej Pytel

    AGREED !!

  • Captain Underpants

I uninstalled this game last week for much the same reason. Endlessly restarting races because the AI can’t drive is not fun at all.

  • Ricoo

GTL engine is better with better graphics, head lights, night racing, better car handling, better FFB…

  • F1Racer

Ricoo, as much as that is your opinion, unfortunately I’ve never seen it happen where someone says something like this and the other person suddenly changes their mind and agrees totally with you.
Changing someone elses mind as to what they like is not an easy thing :)

Personally I do like GTL but its kinda pointless to argue “this is better than…..” because it is all subjective and about personal opinion.

  • Markuz

Is it out now? Aside from the DLC’s, any other improvements?

  • Markuz

I fired back Race 07 yesterday, man! Ugly game but really fun AI to race with.

… heck, I can’t believe Codies’ F1 2010 has better AI than Shift X, albeit a bit slow.

  • Michael

“It was probably too expensive to distribute the content via a pay system”

Not really – there are plenty of counter examples to this on EA’s store and Steam.

They want to get PC users (who are nearly all on Steam) to create and use Origin accounts.

Piracy seems moot. EA’s strategy for the PC is to focus on Free to play.

Since the content was already developed for PC anyway (The devs have said this on nogrip) it probably won’t have lost them much money giving this away.

I’m in 2 minds. Origin looks as badly made as EA’s other websites.

Shift 2’s driving model is pretty good but the AI are hopelessly slow and EA wouldn’t allow a patch from the devs to fix it. I’d like the patch for the other bugs it fixes, but I’m not that bothered about the DLC when there’s no multiplayer and the single player game isn’t at all challenging.

The fun in the game is driving but once a game has a FWD, 4WD, RWD and slow, fast, very fast cars the other cars are not really different to drive.

  • Kris Baxter

True, and I was only suggesting the GTL mod for Race 07 so you can play it in tandom with the new retro pack, with a custom championship. I was not wanting to debate which is a better game, they have their pros and cons, and I personally have not played GTL for a few years because I found it crashed once it was modded, whereas Race does not.

  • Kris Baxter

downloading now, though can’t see patch 2, maybe is included, will find out in about 7 minutes

  • Kris Baxter

yep, patch in with DLC it would seem. Only had time for a quick few drags and a test of the old Nissan 2000 GTR, awesome fun. Hit 401 km/h in my first drag race in a GTR R32 too!

  • Markuz

Why don’t EA just give us a simple download link? It’s free anyway?!? Any direct download links?

After all the Anon/LulzSec/Sony whatever I’m allergic to creating new acounts, EA/Origin or whatever.

  • Ricoo

There is strong points in both title, and I agree it is subjective too. I don’t want to change the mind of someone, but express my view. I just hope Simbin will improve with GTR3 and not produce a game with worse features than the previous one. Race 07 is weaker or lacks some features from GTL, and that is a pity.

  • F1Racer

Agreed.  A simple download link would be nice.   Downloading origin software, putting in unlock codes, signing up to a site…  why all the hurdles ?   Pointless.

  • F1Racer

Does anyone with a Fanatec wheel (particularly the GT3RS) have issues with the FFB swaying in the opposite direction on drag and standing mile events ?

  • Hanzales

Agree. I also noticed with DLC installed all the steering deadzone and lag is gone!!! It changed game experience about 150% for me! Now I can fully use cockpit view without being confused by delayed wheel etc…. THANKS for this big Update and all the magnificant contect !!!

  • Ricoo

Legends pack is nice, interesting cars and tracks. Great addition. :)

  • Markuz

    No AI improvements?

  • Mike Cimuchowski

Some cars sway for me using fanatec turbo s wheel. Most cars don’t however after patch 2 thankfully.

  • Kris Baxter

I can’t think of anything from GTL I miss, but I do miss the marbles from GTR. What other features are missing from GTL? Apart from the stunning cars I don’t remember anything else particularly fancy or new, but I say, it’s been several years now, though I do have my DVD sitting there ready should I HAVE to install it.

  • F1Racer

I’m ok while racing, it’s just on the drag strips when the wheel constantly wants to pull in the wrong direction and causes an uncontrollable swaying effect that stops me keep the car straight.

If any Fanatec users don’t get this can you please post your FFB game settings and FFB settings from the driver config and on the wheel itself?    Thanks.

  • Ricoo

Head lights, morning/evening/night racing, and better graphics, better car handling, and better FFB… Some of those things are subjective tho.

  • Ricoo

I have to test it more to be sure on that point.
