MikeMav’s Simulator, Wheel Review & More

Back in November 2009, I posted a video tutorial by MikeMav who showed off how to put the Fanatec GT3 RS wheel rim on the 911 Turbo S wheel.

Even though I haven’t posted anything from Mike since then, he’s been more than busy, putting his handyman skills to good use building a very impressive setup consisting of three projectors that work both in 2D & 3D mode.

The first video shows off his rig in action with Project CARS & rFactor 2, Mike has also released a video review of Fanatec’s CSR Elite wheel that you can find below.

To wrap things up, Mike’s last video shows the CSR Elite’s gear indicator working with the latest build of Project CARS.

If you enjoy Mike’s work on these videos, consider voting for him at Inside Sim Racing to become Fanatec community tester.

Nice rig Mike. Love your projector setup!

Why nobody use realistic FOV and camera settings when using wide triple monitors!!? why!???
I can see sidemirrors, sidewindows, etc all in front of the player… in near all triple configs out there…

@Dani: Maybe it doesn’t come across in the video, but this sure seems very realistic to me in person. If you look at the still pic for example which is used as the heading for this article, you can see on the left-center a small seam which is in between my left and center screen.

Notice the side mirror is well left of that, so not in front of the player (me) at all. I have to turn my head to see it just as in real life. It is positioned several feet to my left, just where a mirror would be in a similar road car. Also it’s just about exactly life sized with these sized images. As I point out in my video, I look through the wheel to the gauges drawn by the sim just as you do in a real car, and the on-screen wheel size and position match what I see from my seat and the actual wheel. (As a side note, someone pointed out in many sims you can actually use the cockpit cam but turn off the wheel on-screen, which is a better choice so I don’t have to see both a virtual and real wheel. I’ve noticed this feature is sometimes not available or I’m missing it in some builds of pCARS, so it was still turned on in the vids I made but ideally will be turned off.)

Shouldn’t your side mirrors be in front of you?

    Dear Santa….

Awesome projector setup! I was going to go this route but was worried about input lag. Instead running 3 ips monitors that ended up costing me more. Kinda wish I went projector but oh well. In another year or so they hopefully will have little to no input lag, then I will surely go with a 3 projector setup.

  • Eric Erps

Yeah I was going to say with no virtual wheel it would look almost real.  Great stuff!

Why aren’t you using multi-view in rfactor 2? It is one of the few simulations that actually gives you the ability to use 3 viewports, which helps to limit the horrid rectilinear perspective projection distortion. It also gives you a better view of your surroundings.

The best thing would be if simulations started to support cylindrical or (even better) spherical projection, so that people with projectors could use that.

  • Mike M

Couple of reasons. One, I thought I had read multiview wasn’t enabled yet in rF2, but perhaps it has been in the latest build. I will check it out this weekend. But the other reason is that I experimented with this setup a lot, and in rF1 the multiview option didn’t work as well with my setup. My side screens are not angled in very much, maybe 32 degrees. This is a limitation of the fixed, short throw distance on my projectors and where they need to sit in relation to my seat. If I was able to run it more like the standard 45 degrees multiview might be a better option. But in this case when seated in the drivers seat the side screens align well with the center and there is no obvious distortion anyway. Thanks

Ah yes, i assumed with your setup that you could adjust the angle of the side screens.
You’re right, currently you don’t appear to be able to adjust the angle.

I will get a protractor to measure my angles tomorrow, but i think you’re right that it is hard coded at 45 degrees at the moment.

It is nice to see that you have calculated your fov though!

But yer, when it becomes available for you, definately try it as it makes a big difference :)

    FOV is ok..

  • Dani .

That’s not my kind of realistic setup
