Mazda Miata for Assetto Corsa – First Previews

With Assetto Corsa kicking into higher gear towards release, modding for Kunos Simulazioni’s new simulation is picking up as well.

Gergeley Kiss is working on a street version of the Mazda Miata, adding a popular road car to the new simulation.

Outside of the United States, the Miata is better known as the MX-5 in Europe and as Eunos Roadster in Japan. Since February 1989, almost a million Miatas have been sold around the world, making it the most popular roadster in automotive history.

I wonder if this promising mod will be able to grow up to the quality of the original content, in terms of looks and physics as well.
Known for being well balanced and fun to drive, I’d really give this little car a nice try.

Cool little car. Driven one briefly (MX5). Handling is nice on these.

There is nothing wrong with your English bud :)

If modders continue to work on new content at this frequency, we will have a few dozens of mods at the day of release of AC full version. Awesome.

  • Wardez

Hey Szilard, glad you think it’s looking promising. We’re dedicated to keeping things simple for our first mini-mod car so we’ll be focusing entirely on brining it up to par with the base content of AC, with extra details layered on top of it, such as multiple sound, tire & rim, and engine option packages.

We have a lot of Miata enthusiasts with lots of seat time in these fun little cars in our group, so we’ll definitely be testing till the wheels come off, or we get the feeling nailed :)

Also, league racing! Which is the founding idea. You can look forard to racing this in two flavors, showroom stock, and Spec Miata.

  • Wardez

We have plenty of working apps already, check the official forums. But as far as getting some cars out on day 1 of release, that’ll depend on whether or not Kunos decide to release the tools early or not, otherwise it’ll be some time before quality mods are available. If it’s the case that we can begin testing the car in-game before 1.0 is released, then we won’t just give it placeholder physics and shoot it out. We’ll be testing until things get situated and we can release a decent enough, and more importantly fun, representation.

  • Wardez

Yeah, I got to do a track day here around Buttonwillow and it really is a hoot to drive. I felt like I was pushing myself but the car was always like, “PSHT, more more more!”

  • Matt Orr

The question I have – and this is of course very early – stock, or not so stock? A tastefully upgraded Miata would be ace.

Fun little car, I hope RX7 will be next.. oh and don’t forget about RX3! :-D

He replied to Szilard that they plan on having showroom stock and spec miata versions.

I think a focus on road-cars / street versions is one factor that will make Assetto Corsa THE carsim in the near future.

Some ppl are interested in racing and race-cars. ALOT of ppl are interested in cars in general. More consumer-spec cars = more sales.

  • steve30x

Excellent. I much rather the normal cars than the hyper fast cars that a lot of people prefer.

  • steve30x

I myself prefer normal road cars than the super fast cars. When I say normal cars I mean cars like this MX5 , Ford Focus , Renault Clio etc. Its fun to drive those fast cars but I have more fun pushing the slower cars.

    The power of marketing !

Granted there are a bunch of good consumer cars that have interesting envelop of control and with a sophisticated enough simulation even the dullest of cars can still have some fun in them.

When it comes to racing though for me I need something minimum as fast as a top end BTCC or high end radical to get enjoyment from it ,Driving down straights in slow cars drives me mental !

I hope AC doesn’t end up with server after server driving front wheel drive crappy road cars.

I had allot of fun in RF2 with the megan trophy car on-line , but then the clio came out and allot of the busy pub servers moved over to that , frankly after 3 hours or so with that car id rather ride my bicycle.

Again same thing happend with LFS was having loads of fun with the FOX car despite it being slow , then they released that demo with the FBMW and all the servers moved to that then people just moved to the basic road cars. Sure autocross can be fun but its just so slow makes me fall asleep.

lastly i racing with the Mazda and the solstice sure it can be fun for a good few hours and its fantastic to train people up on the basics but dear god it makes me want to stab my eyes out with a pencil.

Cannot deny though would love for more people to be aware of simulators and to see how realistic they have become over the last 3 years or so , and having road cars will certainly atract more people.

I never understood this. Underpowered, understeery and soft suspension cars are just plainly frustrating to drive for me.

  • steve30x

Thats what makes them fun for me. I rather Under Powered , Understeery and soft suspensioned cars. I find them more fun than Overpowered Slippery cars.

  • Anonymous

I prefer the slower race cars…Touring, Spec classes, etc. I see them as street cars that have the poor traits removed (or at least reduced). I’m with gt3rsr on the frustration trying to drive a street car on the track. They were simply never intended to be driven on a track, and it shows.

  • Mark Quigley

The MX-5/Miata/Eunos Roadster should be the sim racing industry standard.

Almost the entire population has driven one/could drive one too and beyond the limits on public roads. By far the best car I have ever mercilessly thrashed and all without getting into licence losing leptons.

  • daz

Does a modder always have to get the car licensed before creating the mod? If not, why do sims like AC have to get licensing deals signed to have certain makes in their release? Why don’t they just do like the modders do, release real life cars, with real life names, un-licensed?

  • http://twitter.com/TheRoggan Roger

It will be awesome if modders can use Kunos tiremodel and apply standard compounds and dimensions to new cars. The weights, dimensions and locations of parts would be relatively straight forward.

The tricky part would be the suspension geometry of each car.

I think each car in AC will have a depth to its handling which we havent felt before due to the fidelity of the tire model, cant wait to try out a powerfull RWD car like the 458 or F40!

I have driven a 458 Italia on country roads and track/airfield IRL and it handles like a spaceship (in a completely good way). Really looking forward to how accurate the simulation is in AC! The steering input response in a Porsche Cayman R or a Lambo LP-560 felt like that in a soft Ford Mondeo in comparison.

The Miata will be great fun as well, it should drift better than the Lotus! :-)

  • gt3rsr

Uhmmm… because they make money on it?

  • Anonymous

They both fall under the same… illegality, but the odds of being sued grow exponentially when you do it in a commercial product. It would be impossible to get away with. The debate is still in for paid mods, too. If that market grows, i’m 99% sure it will be shut down quickly, too.

  • speed1

It is not the sort of car which i really want to drive but the model looks good, as far as i can rate it. I like it if people give there best and put much effort in there work. If the physic will be plausible, i’m shure enough people will have fun with the little thing of a car. Keep it up !

  • steve30x

It looks like three people think I dont prefer the slower cars. They know me better than I know myself.

  • Anonymous

don’t see why you’d bother doing a mod with a car thats essentially a less powerful lotus elise….
but hey, if youre a fan of the car….

  • Anonymous

which is weird. Because race cars are on another level to road cars, unless you want to do some skids and drifting.

its like…….if you want to drive a slow road car….you might as well go and drive your own road car.
the beauty of sim racing is it simulates cars which 99% of people will never drive (race cars).

picking a race car over a road car is a no brainer for me, UNLESS i wanted to do some drifting.

  • Anonymous

why dont you just drive your own road car then… why would you bother with sim games?

  • John Krisfalusci

I just want to say, I’ve had more fun driving street-cars than the Formula or other Race cars. Yeah yeah I know it’s slower, the handling and braking is terrible but for me, the challenge is to perfect those imperfections in a track whether from best time or by drifting and that’s how I always end up enjoying street cars. That paired with the Fanatec clubsport wheels and pedals and the Th8 shifter and boy, you won’t see me out of my room for hours~ Cheers ^_^

  • steve30x

Because I dont own a real road car. Sim means Simulated it doesnt mean All fast cars for just the people who like fast cars. Even on the PCars forum at least 50% of the people voted for normal road cars to be included.

  • Mark Quigley

This should help you understand why….

if you’re referring to power to weight ratio………..well the Elise is still comparable and still faster. If not then I dont understand the point of your comment.
I’ve driven a race prepped MX5 and they have tons of grip and hardly any power, though that was on slicks.
The road car is supposed to be this well balanced neutral small sports car………it is still slow, and won’t be much fun on a track in real life, compared to an Elise. Even a standard Elise is slow for a track car.

i imagine an AC version of an MX5 will drive and feel almost exactly the same as the AC Elise, but will just be slower, and softer.

so..don’t see the point. If i wanted to make a mod i’d choose a fundamentally different and interesting car that would have physics which were unique to it, compared to other cars.

i dont see why anyone would bother trying this unless they are specifically fanatic about the car/own one. There is already one in iracing as well and its boring as hell.

  • Ghoults

My dream would be to have bobstrack builder for ac. It would be amazing to build your own tracks for ac.

  • Anonymous

No idea what marketing nor top gear has to do with that, I think you are both wrong (you and GamerMuscle).

The beauty of sim racing is that it can simulate racing any car ON ANY TRACK.

I can enjoy all kinds of cars in a sim, from street 60s mini to 500hp 2010 DTM (not really F1 though because I’m far too slow for that). Just because you own, say a street mini does not mean it is pointless to race it in sim because it’s still problematic and expensive (and so often directly impossible, as thousands of good tracks dont exist anymore) to ride it on any track you want.

I’m gonna buy a normal Skoda Octavia this year and I would still love to have a realistic street Octavia mod for rF1 and try it in some Japanese or US track where I will probably never be able to take it in real life.

I do prefer fast and stiff racecars, definitely, but any car can be fun in corners time to time (for fun on straights you obviously need high power).

  • Mark Quigley

I think it compliments the Elise, mid rwd, front rwd.
Yep its gutless but power is not the point, nor is sticky tires for that matter. Its just a way to learn without the “spinning off backwards in a ball of fire” bit.

  • gt3rsr

I don’t believe that an experienced simracer can be ‘far too slow’ for any particular kind of car. Even if you couldn’t compete in Formula Sim Racing let’s say, I bet you’re still quicker than 90% guys out there.

  • Mario Strada

I guess because it is one of the most raced cars by real people worldwide?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=652691515 Anthony Ralston

Yes! About time a NA Miata is created for a sim! (Forza doesn’t count)

Thank you guys so much! If you need any info, pics, sound samples, or anything, let me know. I have 3 of them. (95, 96, 92 Spec Miata)
