Logitech – The Era Continues..

Three weeks ago, I posted a story on Logitech’s decision to drop out of the market for console peripherals, speculating that this might also affect the PC range including the popular G25 & G27 wheels.

Shaun & Darin of InsideSimRacing have done some excellent research and got a quote from Logitech on the issue in their latest TWISR show, confirming that Logitech stays committed to the PC market:

The PC gaming is a growing and Logitech has a strong core competency in key peripherals for this market. If a gaming peripheral works with a PC it would be included as part of our strategic focus.

This is excellent news for all fans of Logitech steering wheels. The question now is: When will Logitech unveil a new steering wheel model to take the fight to Fanatec & Thrustmaster?

    I’d buy a G29 in a heartbeat…

Would be great if Logitech preserved their contemporary products – DFGT as an entry level affordable wheel, G27 as mid-range and added another, high-end product without compromise to compete with Fanatec and Thrustmaster.

I haven’t got any hard data but it seems that the number of problems per 1000 units sold is relatively low with Logitech compared to other wheel manufactures. Good value and something more reliable than most, I’m glad that they’ll stay.

I agree 100%. Logitech wheels might not be the most “top of the range” wheels on the market per se, but they are dependable, well-made and reasonably priced. In the 3 years I’ve had my G25, its taken quite a bit of battering… but it still works just as well as the day I bought it.

I loved my G25′s, my G27, DFP and other Logi wheels……..all great value and decent performing wheels, My curent TM – T500 is clearly a step up from my old G27 and I would love to see a competitor in that sector from Logitech.

It’s time for a G27 replacement. Fanatec is not for everyone because of its (lack of) availability and/or customer support in many countries. It’s also much more expensive when you buy all the units that used to come in 1 package of G25!
I’d really like to see a new Logitech wheel that much like G27 but with a load-cell brake pedal and 2-mode shifter making its return in a more reliable form.

Mine’s in use since 2007. I’m really looking forward to Logitech coming up with something in this price range, cause it’s not going to last forever, is it? ))

    Proud G27 owner.

I would like to see them come up with a dual drive system (an
extension of the current G27 Wheel.)

Still mainly gear driven, but a minor belt or belts in front
of the 2 drive motors to take up the slack/chatter of the gears.

And a load cell option for the brake pedal, with the same or
more pedal stroke as current G27 pedals..

    I second this

If they want to stay in the game they need to release a non-gear driven system, load cell brake, more pedal travel, and stick with the everything-is-in-the-box model rather than piecemeal approach of Fanatec.

We’re already seeing people like ISI say tough titties to G25/G27 as they believe gear-driven wheels are history. In some ways this is true though games like netKar Pro still give better FFB without trying to kill my gears.

Gears are quite loud, though, non-load cell brakes are cheap feeling, lack of travel is a problem for fidelity and buying multiple extras isn’t a good idea. Do it right this time Logitech! Undercut ze Germans!

  • eifionevans

Same but still hang on to my old faithful G27 as well. Perhaps mod the hell out of it, tis an awesome wheel.

I’m not sure Logitech can compete in the luxury segment. They tend to do best with reasonably priced dependable peripherals. I can’t see them doing anything lower yield than the G25 and G27, especially since the higher end market is already pretty crowded for its size.

I don’t see a load cell brake or better fidelity pots being high-end at this point. It’s par for the course and they just need to catch up. I think gear-driven wheels might still be worth pursuing but they do need to make their next wheel peripheral stay with the times and what modern sims/racing games require from FFB these days.

I don’t think it should have a bunch of button boxes, LED screens, in-game selection for strength or other parameters, use real leather, or anything like that.

They DO need to keep it current, though, if they wish to sell it at the current G27 MSRP.

+1 for the reliable 2-mode shifter! Load cell? I don’t see that happening, it’ll just become too expensive.

  • Marco Hooghuis

Load cells are still pretty expensive. Just because it has been around for a while doesn’t mean it’ll just become cheaper over time indefinitely. Just look at leather, that has been used for a million years and it’s not considered cheap.

With their buying power, it would cost next to nothing to add loadcell to their package. As long as they don’t add the same as Fanatec uses and breaks after use. I’ve used a beam load cell for 6 years, without it having problems. That’s a long term reliable product.

Yes, going along with Marco, I’m not so sure that a load cell can be built anywhere near the price of a load cell. As an upgrade perhaps, but again I see Logitech like the Toyota of peripherals. Boring and inexpensive, but functional and reliable.
