I doubt its an F1 driver. I think it’ll be a sportscar driver or something, Tom Kristensen? He pretty bloody famous.

well, a totally different answer to most you guys but my theory is based on 2 real world drivers who i think are inactive at the moment but they are also avid sim racers already that is quite well known,

1. David Grecko
2. Sean Edwards

No but seriously Jos Verstappen seems a pretty good gues to me, having been a formula one driver kind off qualifies you as being world-wide known in my book. But he is kinda still “active”, being in this years 24 hours of le mans, then in wouldn’t really be a “comeback to the track”

ok so Nelson Piquet Jr, Ricardo Rossett or Sebastian Bourdais maybe ? :) I would love it to be Alex Zanardi but he's still active isn't he ? Can't be Montoya cos his head is still broken..... Maybe a BTCC or GT driver.
