There have been quite some solutions to extend the players’ side view when sim racing. TrackIR is one of them, a multiple monitor setup can also be used to see whats going on left and right of your car.
A rather innovative approach is the jDome which not just lets players see 50% more of the game environment but also helps immersing the drivers into the game. Originally intended for the use with first person shooters, this could very well be used for sim racing – More info can be found on the jDome website.

Sweet! I’m not crazy about the blurry-ish image that results from the conversion, but widening your field of vision certainly has it’s advantages.

The jDome, I’ve discovered, works best with First Person games since the head is controlled by the mouse which means you don’t have to turn your real head to look around. In car and flight sims the head is usually fixed inside the cockpit, or badly controlled (sadly), which makes you tend to turn your real head, and then the distortions and unfocus gets visible.
But with a special lens and some new type of graphics drivers all this can be removed, and you can play car sims with this thing – Imagine tilting the dome over you a bit – and then you are inside the car and can look out thru the side windows!
But first things first – lets get this thing out where it works from the get-go first.
