One of the most significant changes in the newest iRacing build, apart from the Lotus 79 of course, was the new camera editing tools that allow sim racers to get very creative with their replays now.
This will make iRacing much more interesting for racers that love to take videos or screenshots as every camera can be edited using a variety of settings.
The video below should give you an idea about the possibilities, showing a well-composed Riley Daytona Prototype fight at Road America.

At the price they ask to play, they should be ashamed of their graphical engine ^^

I’m getting old – these cars just look a bit silly to me with their oversize “cabs”. Give me a Porsche 917 any day :)

Yeah, it lacks the bloom that I’ve never seen in real life or the Vaseline-like glop shine that I’ve NEVER seen on a race car in reality or TV.
In other words, iRacing looks like a proper motor race, not Need For Speed or Gran Turismo cars intoxicated on a mix of Meguiar’s and Vaseline.

The video posted is a big cliché, quite boring, made me skip a lot of it. Shum94 is right though, sure they put the funding where it’s most needed but you can’t deny the value of the graphics is low when compared to the rest of the market. GT5 still looks the most realistic compared to TV footage. Even if you disable the bloom, the colours and motion clartiy are spot on.
Now this video is much more upbeat, I enjoyed this more than the previous and it shows iRacing’s advantages in good light.

Actually, once you get used to the iRacing Style of gfx and movement, allotof other sims look like they come straight out of a comic coloring book. i Cant put my finger on it why , but iracing at 1920×1200 looks real realistic.

That looks properly good, and I just wish Simbin would understand all the free marketing they miss out on due to the awfully lacking camera options in their games. rFactor has been the leader in this department for how long now? 40 years? It feels like it. I dont know how many options you get in iRacing, but it looks like the tools are there.

You get a *lot* more camera options in iRacing than rFactor. And it is all editable in the sim itself. Here is the menu showing how cameras are edited -

Having an easy camera editor is one of the best possible things that iRacing could have done in terms of a marketing point of view. It has allowed users to show off all the little details in iRacing which are hard to capture with the normal camera views.
Here is a screenshot from Milwaukee. Check out the beautiful detail. It may not look important, but when you catch a glimpse of it, it really helps the immersion factor –

I wouldn’t say so, the shadows look grey and too light, there’s no HDR to account for bright areas. Then there’s little normal mapping and bump mapping and other modern graphical features.

Although I don’t like iRacing I really dig their graphics. I don’t think it looks bad at all. You also have to consider the fact that a simulator’s physics are taking up a lot of resources so you can’t have the graphics of NFS without lagging.

I believe the shadows are just right there. Just go out in a midday and try to find that completely dark shadow common in other games. The HDR you are talking about is nothing more than one of ”cinematic” effects mostly common for cheap cameras with low dynamic range. Your eyes adapts too quickly generally so you don’t see any overexposed spots unless you see straight to the sun.
I also think many other games looks too comics like and guess it’s because of everything are too flashy and exaggerated including normal mapping that often looks artificial and vaseline smeared.

IMO the graphics do their job. The only gripe I have is that it’s always a bright sunny afternoon when you race, I’d love to see an option to set the time like rF or GTR2..

I’m with you on this one!
IRacing should be proud of that their graphics don’t look like GRID or others.
It’s like Codemasters and specially NFS (whoever have developed their underground -> undercover series) have been trying so hard to recreate the sensation of speed, that they don’t know where to go anymore.
)
It looks like you’re on drugs or something when you push the throttle “button” in these games. (maybe it is the wrong kind of speed

While it’s good to have someone to push the envelope, to see what’s possible. It certainly not the point that everyone should follow their steps to recreate these overdone movie like effects.
IRacing and other sims (ISI, LFS, netKar, even the GT5P) are more close to what you see on live TV aka racing.
, so can’t comment on how it looks from the car/helmet

In the video 00.49>00.52 sec
The shadow display is below what can do rFactor, plus this game doesnt have time scale. My point is at the price they ask for be in, their graphical engine is overdated.
Be ware that its the best looking game because they got great artist who do a nice job with the nascar 2003 engine, i see Hudson work as soon as i see Iracing.
Their cockpit arent impressing, the sounds too, the ffb is a little better than the rest of the sims, and the netcode is good but less good as rFactor, thats my opinion.
Again my point is, at the price they charge it should look better than a great nascar 2003 reworked engine.
No troll.

I like the realistic movement of the cars, alot better than rfactor.
But i stil hate iracing, to expansive for what you get, its only worth the monney if you are a racing driver and want to learn the tracks.

Im sorry guys, but my video is not a good example of iRacing’s new camera tool feature.
I have been working on this video since June 24th. Most of the content have been FRAPs before the update. Most of the camera movements have been made “manually” with Adobe Premiere Pro.
Only a few shots have been made using – some or many of – the new camera tool features. Among these shots, only 3 (those marked with a “*”) have been made using a “new” camera. All the others have been made with the default camera on witch I have changed just a few parameters.
- 2nd sequence of the 2nd fight in the “action” part (#10 passing #12 on T1);
- 4th sequence of the 3rd fight in the “action” part (#2 and #9 on second to last turn);
- *4th sequence of the 4rd fight in the “action” part (#1 and #5 exiting last turn) ;
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, *4th and *5th slow-motion sequences.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

In fairness I’d be worried if rFactor couldn’t produce better quality images than a highly compressed low resolution youtube video. You claim you’re not trolling, but given that this price commentary is becining a dead horse, it is hard to look in remarks like this as being anything but. If you truely are not trolling, at least qualify your statements, and demonstrate a knowledge of where the cost of iracing goes, along with the necessity of balancing graphics output and physics complexity
