iRacing.com – Indianapolis & IRL Announced

iRacing.com has finally confirmed a rumor that was floating around the community for quite a while as the Indycar Series and Indianapolis Motorspeedway will be joining the simulation this fall.

Started as a competitor to the popular CART series, the IRL was founded in 1996 and has become the United States’ sole top open-wheel series following Champ Car’s end in early 2008. Today, the series uses Honda-powered Dallara chassis using Ethanol-fuel. The series trademark event is the Indianapolis 500 that is run each year in May, being one of the world’s most important motor races.

The Indy 500 is run on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, nicknamed the “Brickyard”. Opened in 1909, the 2.5 mile oval was the first ever professional racing venue, able to accommodate up to 400.000 spectators. Aside from the Indy 500, the track also hosts an annual NASCAR Sprint Cup race known as the Brickyard 400 and has hosted several United States Formula One Grand Prix on its road course configuration.

Why are they wasting time on making a stupid IRL Dallara? A Lola B02/00 or Panoz DP01 Champcar would 100 times better!

Yeah, CART is cooler but OW oval racing is most awesome in every form :P

Maybe because the series that used those chassis failed miserably :) After 2002 it was all a boring snooze fest in “Champ Car”

I do miss the Lola though, pretty car, the DP01 was a high nosed pig of a car though. Not a worthy successor to the lola IMO

    Here is the answer:

Italy’s Dallara Automobili, the company that designs, manufactures and supports both the IndyCar Series and Firestone Indy Lights cars, is collaborating with the iRacing tech team in developing the two vehicles.

“It was iRacing’s demonstrated ability to work closely with the manufacturers of the cars already in its inventory that persuaded us to grant them permission to build virtual versions of the Dallara I 09 and IP 09,” said Andrea Toso, Dallara Automobili’s head of research and development and US racing projects leader. “It has been an interesting project, and we continue to enjoy working closely with Dave Kaemmer and his engineers.”

I wouldn’t be suprised if they are already working on these behind the scenes. Couple months back they mentioned they were trying to work out a deal with the licences.

Once they get the license they usually keep it hush hush till they feel they have something solid to announce and showoff.
