iRacing.com – Spa Laser Scanning Has Started

Six days ago, iRacing delighted European sim racers by announcing the addition of Spa Francorchamps to the lineup of tracks in their online racing simulation.

While initial info was that laser-scanning at Spa was due to start in a week, the iRacing guys seem to be ahead of schedule. The photo below, courtesy of Dave Moulthrop, shows the iRacing squad already being busy at Spa, collecting all the required data for the following modelling work. No release date for the track has been given yet and with various other tracks still in the pipeline, sim racers may very well have to wait until 2011 to get their hands on iRacing’s Spa.

Opened in 1922, Spa Francorchamps is located in the Belgian Ardennes and has been hosting Formula One races, sports car races and other high-profile motorsport events ever since. Up until 1978, the circuit was made up of mostly public roads, creating a high-speed 14.1 kilometer layout. The modern version of the track opened in 1979 and has remained largely unchanged despite some recent modifications at the start/finish area and the bus stop chicane.

Even though the current 7 kilometer circuit isn’t as spectacular as the old layout, key elements such as the La Source hairpin and the famous Eau Rouge corner have been retained, making Spa a favorite of both the fans and many drivers.

    Can’t wait!

  • Coennulft

Thats great news! Really looking forward to it… :-D

  • aledmb

    suck it! :D

  • BSR-WiX

If the track will be so detailed and accurate as the rest of the iRacing tracks, then this will be their biggest project to date.

  • stabiz

New cpu for me. :) This puppy deserves maximum everything.

  • felipe

Monaco, Le Mans 24h and some South American tracks! I can’t believe we have Australian tracks and ZERO South American tracks that’s unbelievable specially knowing iRacing has a huge support coming from SA!

  • felipe

BTW great to see Spa being scanned!

  • Mike Oppenheimer

Hopefully thats what will come next, now that it is really the only continent left that has lots of tracks.

    *Hopes for Interlagos*

  • stabiz

Interlagos is okay, but there are tons of tracks I would rather have.  And none of those are in South America.

  • felipe

that’s a personal taste or choice and I’m sure that there’re tons of people out there that wouldn’t want the same tracks you do. My point is after US I’m sure Brazil for example is one of the countries with more subscribers out there!

  • stabiz

Yep, but I dont see why its so important to have “home” tracks. I would rather do some laps on Suzuka than any Norwegian track ever built.

  • felipe

lol yep I love Suzuka too :)  and Thermalito an almost unknown track world wide but Interlagos you mentioned has hosted some of the most exciting F1 races for over 2 decades just imagine racing Williams f1 at Interlagos ;)

  • felipe

p.s. thermalito isn’t a real track but a real location!

  • Empty

Hmmm, Laser Scanned Spa and what should be the most realistic F1 car we’ve seen in a consumer sim.

So, how many people will be running the Solstice this time next year? ;)

  • GeraArg

You don´t know the tracks that exist in South America…  :-P
    Intergalos (Brasil)
    Balcarce (Argentina)
    Potrero de los Funes (Argentina)
    Londrina (Brasil, amazing short track)

Only these four tracks are much more entertaining than many North American and European overrated tracks…  ;)
