This track looks amazing!
Just look at the level of detail
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg1QNwPXmXU

IRacing is cheap, if you compare the quality of the service to the competitors and their prices.

If the people who constantly feel the need to contribute their thoughts on iRacing's pricing plan for every single iRacing article published on VirtualR put the same ammount of effort into meeting new friends and losing their virginity then the world would at least be without one less stupid argument.
At the end of the day, some things are worth paying for, for some people. If you can't accept that, why not grow a pair and swallow your pride by keeping your pathetic squabbles to yourself - leave the rest of us to enjoy the things we want and have.

Moving on. The new screenshots are great and i'm looking forward to being able to drive around a track that hasn't once been justified in any sim-replica we've seen. I hope they add this to the Skippy season, it'd be a great car to drive around a track like this.. paddock looks as it should - scary!

On the topic of the iracing grass textures, it would be nice if there were seasons texture packs in iracing like there are for FSX or multiple seasons in some of the rFactor Nordschleife track packs, but I think at this point that's a luxury wishlist item way down on my list of nice to have items (below better transmission/driveline modeling and multiclass racing), but overall I've been pleasantly surprised at the textures in iracing, they are top quality and no surprise since I seem to remember that the rFactor texture wiz Hudson Kerr quit his rFactor texture work and joined iracing sometime back...

On a similar topic I wonder if most people's opinion on the drab iracing colors are mainly a color palette choice or shading characteristic as opposed to a limit of the graphics engine? I noticed that there's a huge differences in color palletes between rfactor, GTR2 and GTREvo which are all based on a similar gMotor engine under the hood, but with different color palette choices by each dev team.

Anyhow to me iRacing looks great and at this point I don't mind if they improve the gfx at some point but I think improving the car physics and modeling (driveline/transmission/brakes/tires) is much more important to me...

marc1111:
That’s exactly what I want as well!!!I had done quite a bit of work to start up a single class, multi-car MMA league pitting the DP, C6R and Radical against each other, but then iRacing released at the last minute that they couldn’t do multiple chassis (i was bummed!).Those cars would be very competitive against each other, especially on the non-HP tracks. Most people actually predicted the Radical to win a race. That to me would be a wonderful twist rather than everybody just driving the same spec car all the time.Anyway, this track looks wonderful.Speed TV showed a BTCC race from there a week or two ago and the racing is just fantastic.Paddock bend is just awesome.I saw a British Superbike race there one time.Fantastic!!!

Marc, yeah too bad we didn't get multi-claas, multi-car in the last build. I'm really looking forward to it.

Although, we start week 7 today, so we should have multi-car, multi-class in 5-6 weeks with the next build. Time flies! Usually around mid-season they give some teasers as to what will be in the next build. My guess is we'll have it in both Hosted and Arrive and Drive.

fpol: Man, how much graphic detail do you guys want? “consistent with grass detail”…?That’s only important if screen shots and fancy replays are important -has nothing to do with *driving* and racing. This over emphasis by simmers on how something looks led to some horribly inaccurate tracks (and mods) being praised because they looked good, but drove terriblyThe important parts of a track are it’s layout, camber (very, very important) *decent* bump modeling (actually, it doesn’t even *have* to be as accurate as iRacing), getting the difference in asphalt at various tracks (and on the same track many times) correct. Also important is precise placement of roadside items so if you’re used to using a pole as a reference irl -it’s exactly there in the sim, not 10 feet off.I’m driving GPL a lot now – ancient graphics – and once my lap starts, i barely notice.I can be *very* critical of iRacing as they (IMHO) haven’t lived up *mechanically* to what I’d expected when joined, but I can find no flaw with their tracks other than not being able to update them to reflect changes in a timely manner(expensive though). That’s not conjecture from just watching races on TV – I’ve driven, and walked at least 5 tracks in iRacing multiple times irl, before and since joining iRacing and am intimately familiar with them.

Very well said.

And as someone who has a computer that is at the bottom end of iRacing's minimum requirements, I would much rather see iRacing continue to refine its driving, physics and tire models and offer more excellent Web interface improvements. Those all make the sim much more realistic and enjoyable -- and create a much smaller performance hit on older machines -- than ensuring the proper strain of bentgrass or zoysia grass is modeled blade by blade at a racetrack.

Glad to help and I get tired of it too.I agree with many posters who say iRacing is expensive compared to other sims.I don’t mind them mentioning it at all. It’s when the same exact poster say’s it over and over in threads, that aren’t even related to pricing, that it gets really old.At some point it crosses over from legitimate discussion to trolling.

Exactly. Hence my exasperation with my prior post. Normally I keep my cool regarding the anti-iRacing "pay to rent" bleats, but Felipe's steady drivel is about as consistent and soothing as a jackhammer chipping concrete next to your ear for about eight straight hours.

The message is fine; the frequency and redundancy is ridiculous.

But I must hand it to Felipe: He intertwined international politics and a dig at the U.S. into a supposedly restrained reply.

I don't care where anyone is from: I just like to sim race.

You can't be a money maker until you actually make money.

So far iRacing is in debt, but one day they will be money makers.... Not yet, but one day..... ;-)

I agree. I want that too.

They have said they will have it. They have multi-class now with Week 13 and Fun races. They have covered so many classes they only have 1 car per class, but soon they'll overlap and they'll have multiple car races per class.

It's coming. Updates every 3 months.

It seems like everything it optimized for HDR color wise, but there is no HDR to speak of so once they actually get around to adding that the colors should appear more realistic.

I find it hard to believe that they could add proper HDR.

Wouldn't that require a major re-write of the graphic renderer?

It’s not too bad when you are driving and actually focusing on driving. But if you stop and take a good look at the grass it’s just not the colour of any grass I’ve seen, anywhere.I can understand why they the colour would be desaturated but it seems like it’s just a completely wrong colour to begin with.I suppose if this is my only major issue with the graphics in the game it’s doing a pretty good job though. I cannot wait to drive around this Brands Hatch, even if it had grass textures made using Paint.

It seems like everything it optimized for HDR color wise, but there is no HDR to speak of so once they actually get around to adding that the colors should appear more realistic.

I’d like to see mixed class racing too.iRacing has it during their Week 13 and Fun races, but have yet to offer it for official race series.I enjoy ALMS style and mixed classes too. They may offer mixed car/class racing in their next build. It’s been mentioned in interviews that it has a chance for January. They have already licensed the Super V8’s and other cars are coming too.The Ford GT in another.Indy Lights. There are more, but I forget all of them at the moment.I’d like to see more Euro/Intl cars like Ferrari, BMW, Porsche, Audi. They have one VW the Jetta TDI, but we need more.I guess the Lotus would be considered outside North America and the V8’s too. They seem to have a consistent pipeline of new announcements and content, so it will happen.

That's not even my point, everything is the same exact car. It's not like you can have GT2 level BMWs running against GT2 level corvettes or something of the like. I want multiple cars of the same class against each other and iracing has none of that.

Man, how much graphic detail do you guys want? "consistent with grass detail"...?

That's only important if screen shots and fancy replays are important -has nothing to do with *driving* and racing. This over emphasis by simmers on how something looks led to some horribly inaccurate tracks (and mods) being praised because they looked good, but drove terribly

The important parts of a track are it's layout, camber (very, very important) *decent* bump modeling (actually, it doesn't even *have* to be as accurate as iRacing), getting the difference in asphalt at various tracks (and on the same track many times) correct. Also important is precise placement of roadside items so if you're used to using a pole as a reference irl -it's exactly there in the sim, not 10 feet off.

I'm driving GPL a lot now - ancient graphics - and once my lap starts, i barely notice.

I can be *very* critical of iRacing as they (IMHO) haven't lived up *mechanically* to what I'd expected when joined, but I can find no flaw with their tracks other than not being able to update them to reflect changes in a timely manner(expensive though). That's not conjecture from just watching races on TV - I've driven, and walked at least 5 tracks in iRacing multiple times irl, before and since joining iRacing and am intimately familiar with them.

superapex: This looks absolutely amazing. I may have to renew my iRacing subscription while I wait for GT5 and rFactor2 to release.
Only complaint I have is that drab dreariness that every iRacing track has. In
real life brands hatch as a venue is a vivid palette: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/charliemoseley/brandsHatch9.jpg

Hey mate,

I have done a bit of work (very amateur) with the ISI sims, GTR2 mainly.

What I found when designing grass textures especially is that they look terrible if they are too green or too bright. Perhaps its the checkerboard nature of the texture repetition or the overall low res nature of the textures, but they just look "bad" if they aren't desaturated. Take a look at the Imola grass texture in GTR2. The grass looks radioactive.

Lincoln Miner: You’re attitude brings forums in the mire. And places trolls on a pedestal.I do not believe iRacing fans should go into every rFactor thread and make the same complaints over and over just to get attention.Believe me I am perfectly capable of cluttering every thread at VirtualR poking holes in every other sim whether it’s on topic or not. The reason I don’t is that is counter productive and what I’d consider trolling. If you think I couldn’t find fault with every other sim on the market, you’re DEAD wrong. And if you think Fellipe’s broken record complaints about the iRacing business model in a thread about track scans is productive then you are a fan of anarchy, antagonistic posts and trolling.Tell me your favorite sim and I’ll spend a month posting non stop problems with that sim over and over again. See how everyone likes it in that forum. Then you can come to my defense and say, “Oh, the rFactor brigade…blah, blah, blah”. Or would you come to my defense. I HIGHLY doubt it.What a load of crap. You and people like you are the problem not just in iRacing threads, in all threads. Trolling is the bane of internet forums. It’s like internet forum terrorism. Just show up and throw a hand gernade into the village and then complain when people respond. Say something constructive and/or contribute to a discussion about the topic or don’t post. The discussion about the grass color and HDR is at least on topic.

Diswanio:
A BIG THANK YOU!!
Im really getting SICK that people stilllll bitch about the cost?!

Glad to help and I get tired of it too.

I agree with many posters who say iRacing is expensive compared to other sims. I don't mind them mentioning it at all. It's when the same exact poster say's it over and over in threads, that aren't even related to pricing, that it gets really old. At some point it crosses over from legitimate discussion to trolling.

I would even certainly agree everyone needs to decide for themselves. Often though they say it's apples to apples with other sims/cars/tracks and iRacing is different. It still may not be worth it, but many don't realize iRacing offers different things and the tracks/cars are different. Still might not be worth it, but there are differences, that they should be aware of.

As for the iRacing businees model and the Felipe type complaint of "It's crazy to pay for tracks/cars", I think many don't realize it's not an uncommon business model (ie cell phones, satellite dishes etc) and some education to that point is worthwhile.

Thanks for your support! I just enjoy reasonable discussion in forums and hope we can stay on topic. I think it makes VirtualR a more interesting place to visit if we do. :-)

Yeah, I'd like to see the color palette on the grass be a bit more vibrant, but that's a very subjective topic.

There are a number of issues to consider.

1 - Monitor calibration - Here is an article on monitor calibration from Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_balance

The actual colors that everyone viewing this forum are different depending on your monitor and/or it's calibration. In desktop publishing for advertising I remember using Pantone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantone numbers for all our company logos, becsuse the printers couldn't easily match colors off computer images for print brochures etc.

2. Lighting conditions at time of photo

Colors look very different in photos depending on the time of day and angle of the sun. I'm a golfer. I often read greans by the dull or shiny grass, which is how to read grain. On one side of the green the grass can be shiny and a different color than the other depending on the type of grass used on the green.

3. Season of the year

Grass looks very different depending on the time of year. It's often brown in summer and greener in winter in places like Infineon in Northern California. I live near there and remember the forum complaints about the brown grass. Turns out the poster visited Infineon in March when the hills were all green. Locals know it's brown 6 months out of the year. Many other places it's the opposite. Brown in winter and green in summer, so a track designer has to decide what time of year he's creating to color palette to match.

In the end though, I'd agree with you. Wish the colors at Brands were more vibrant.

Here are some examples of real Photos of Brands Hatch at different times of the year and/or with different lighting. All very different.

I prefer the 4th image with it's vibrant colors like you do, but it's personal preference. I guess the iRacing designer chose something in the middle.

Note: To Felipe and Carbonfire, this is what a constructive and informative discussion looks like.
