I actually prefer the graphics of iRacing over other sims/games. Forza, GT, Shift all use too much "gloss", IMO. Too much HDR and the like get a little goofy after a while. To me, iRacing strikes a pretty good balance. I would like to see some improved track/terrain textures, but the cars look fantastic. One other aspect I would like to see, and I am glad it is coming, is night racing (I believe I read somewhere the iRacing team will be implementing this).

IRacing needs more "life" to the graphics, that's about it, IMO.

No, their executive producer said a while ago that the next build (released this week) should already have new tire physics implemented on one car. Release notes haven't been published yet, so it's still not official.

Luckily good taste is subjective. iRacing's graphics are about as exciting as the prospect of watching a sex tape involving Prince Charles. And about as realistic as well.

jux:
It’s no secret that Kaemmer has been working on an improved tire model. The questionnaire will just help them figure out how to prioritize improvements and new features.

I was under the impression it would be well down the track tho? Anyways as much as I dont like the graphics, imo iRacing should prioritise physics and the racing experience above anything given thats what it markets itself on. That means more comprehensive modelling of internal damage and wear, and features like flatspots and the accumulation of rubber on the track impacting grip - stuff thats already been modelled to some extent on other current sims. Ah and the gearbox modelling....I've had a bitch about it many times before but it needs to be vastly improved.

Paul Kelly:
console games have gone WAY too far with sheen and bloom.

Agree with that. Most modern games substitute an attention to details and realism for flashy "cinematic" effects. As a result almost every game now looks like shiny Christmas tree. They believe it as a technical achievement but it seems to me more like a lack of good taste.

ral42: I’m a big iRacing fan but the graphics need work.In particular, the world lighting is poor.It looks so flat and lifeless, especially the track surface.Other games like GT5 are WAY beyond iRacing here. When I’m racing I don’t notice it much (if at all) because I’m totally focused on the driving. But when looking at screenshots or replays, it sticks out.Fortunately, it looks like they’re going to try to do something about it.At least, the latest survey they sent out had some questions trying to gauge interest in improving the graphics…

Couldn't disagree more. iRacing's graphics look realistic -- GT5, Forza, Shift and other console games have gone WAY too far with sheen and bloom.

For example, I'm sick of seeing shiny roads in racing games. When you go to a racetrack, the surface is not shiny, even with the sun is beating down on it. It's worn, used, tire-marked asphalt. iRacing flat-out nails what a racing surface should look like.

I do think some of the poly counts are a bit low on iRacing's cars compared to other console and PC sims. Maybe that's just an optical illusion. But I do not, under any circumstances, want iRacing to take the "let's coat the car with Vaseline" approach of most console developers. The cars in GT5 and Shift, for example, have WAY too much gloss.

Plus there is one good by-product of iRacing's current graphics: The game will run on older rigs like mine without a problem. iRacing should be VERY careful about forcing customers out of the marketplace technically by upping the graphics' ante.

I think VERY few, if any, iRacing customers buy the game for the graphics. They buy it for the racing, the driving, the total experience. Graphics is a component of that package, but it's not nearly as important as it is for console games and other sims because they're driving and racing experience is weaker than iRacing's.

I'm a big iRacing fan but the graphics need work. In particular, the world lighting is poor. It looks so flat and lifeless, especially the track surface. Other games like GT5 are WAY beyond iRacing here. When I'm racing I don't notice it much (if at all) because I'm totally focused on the driving. But when looking at screenshots or replays, it sticks out. Fortunately, it looks like they're going to try to do something about it. At least, the latest survey they sent out had some questions trying to gauge interest in improving the graphics...

If you log-in and then the site tells you to log-in again, instead of doing it just press F5 and you should be fine (that works for me).
And about the ads… well, just use the latest version of Firefox and install Adblock Plus.

The graphics are fine, maybe the grass could be a shade greener but otherwise I love the clean look. Not to say it can't be brought up to current generation with 3D grass sprites, greater bump mapping, parallax mapping, HDR, etc. But would notice most of these things at high speed?

Again, all these iRacing shots just make me more pumped for rF2.

If you log-in and then the site tells you to log-in again, instead of doing it just press F5 and you should be fine (that works for me).
And about the ads... well, just use the latest version of Firefox and install Adblock Plus.

The shots were posted on iRacings member forum by iRacing staff who took them on his own rig following questions whether a few pics could be shared.

No fancy photoshop post procesing marketing shots you see in most games, this is how iRacing looks on an average PC.

Maxed out on a high end rig the game looks a lot better, there are enough screenshots on the interweb showing this.
