I can tell by your response, you didn’t even think about what I said except for the word fail. Restaurants don’t charge a subscription and they don’t rent food. I don’t see how buying food and iracing are similar.

You obviously are of the mistaken opinion, that you have to match every item in every analogy.

It's what they have in common that matters. I can't possibly create an analogy you'd understand, because you fundamentally just don't understand how iRacing's business model works.

You don't need to purchase every single car and track to enjoy it.

No analogy. Simple. Hope you get it now.

You have to pay your membership dues to be able to get in the door. The membership allows you to eat some items on the menu for free. But if you want the Kobe Beef you have to pay extra. :)

Screw analogies its a simple concept. You pay monthly to use the service, and an one time only fee for each additional piece of content you want to use within that service. No posh meal on the menu, just good hard racing.

Part of the problem is that us simmers (especially rfactor users) are spoilt for choice when it comes to content. Have some random urge to drive around the grand canyon? Chances are you can probably dl that. The idea of only buying tracks that you will use is a pretty foreign concept for most people I would imagine. I dont know about anyone else but my rfactor directory is about 40 GB.......and I only use a maybe a dozen of those mods and tracks on a regular basis. Long story short, you'll need a change of perpective to understand iracing's business model.

No, you fail…, but nice try anyway.Analogies are meant to simplify things, but you didn’t get the simplified version, so this should help. Here’s the Fisher Price version of the analogy. You don’t need to purchase every car and track in iRacing and you don’t need to purchase every meal on a menu if you aren’t going to eat every meal on the menu or purchase every car and track in iRacing. It makes no sense to add up all the prices of all the meals on a menu or add up all the prices of all the tracks and cars from iRacing. This is the kind of analogy they use on IQ tests, so think a little harder about the analogy before you try to rip on someone for an analogy you don’t understand.I shouldn’t need to explain it and probably didn’t need to explain it to 99% of the readers, but there you go…

msater: Exactly what Lincoln is saying.I’ll get iRacing sometime next year. Just wish they’d get a LMP1 car and a modren F1. That would seal it for me.

Problem with that is those cars are very secretive in there inner workings, so the likely hood of iRacing getting access to scan one is pretty low. that said, we might be able to get a car from 5 or so years ago

I totally agree with you on that one! But there’s hope I’ll play wait and see as 2010 approaches I hope many guys out there continue supporting iRacing so one day they paid all costs and than iRacing can come down to earth with their prices. Take out all cars and tracks fees with at maximum 60 dollars yearly fee and I’ll join the party!
before you start bashing me with the same saying I can buy any road car out there you name it! Of course don’t include old or new relics

I guess arguing is more fun than racing for you guys!
Funny to see the significant reduction of negative responses about IRacing in here :D

Anyways, here is one more peace of bad news
60$ a year, without the content... And you have to participate in races, how naughty is that!? :haha:

hoboracer:
That’s a rediculous analogy. So I buy this meal once, can I go back and eat it as many times as I want. FAIL!

No, you fail..., but nice try anyway.

Analogies are meant to simplify things, but you didn't get the simplified version, so this should help.

Here's the Fisher Price version of the analogy.

You don’t need to purchase every car and track in iRacing and you don’t need to purchase every meal on a menu if you aren't going to eat every meal on the menu or purchase every car and track in iRacing. It makes no sense to add up all the prices of all the meals on a menu or add up all the prices of all the tracks and cars from iRacing.

This is the kind of analogy they use on IQ tests, so think a little harder about the analogy before you try to rip on someone for an analogy you don't understand. I shouldn’t need to explain it and probably didn’t need to explain it to 99% of the readers, but there you go…

You really don't need all the tracks. I'm yet another road course only guy and in fact only run a skip barber and Star Mazda. I've only purchased four add-on tracks 3 of those were bought with 'credit' money. Due to the fact they've changed the skip season now, I'll *finally* be buying a few more, and will be buying them all with iRacings own credits. It's possible to keep the purchases down to a bare minimum, though you can then feel like you're paying a yearly fee, for minimal use. Sort of a catch 22. But prices are cheaper now - and it's a great multiplayer framework if you like spec racing (which I've about had enough of to be honest - never liked sitting on grid with 20 cars in class just like mine).

Really look forward to Mid Ohio as it really is one of North America's finest tracks from a drivers perspective, though it can be hard to pass on. Hope it gets here before my current sub expire and I quit the service late next summer. After that, I'll probably only buy a month here or there if I'm preparing to go to a new (to me) track, or one I've not been to in a few years.

Great news about Mid Ohio, one of my virtua_lm faves from rF/GTR2/GTREvo and what I always considered was an obvious missing North America track for iracing now that we have the awesome Mosport... maybe it's too much to hope but it would be awesome if iracing did LaSarthe and Rouen too someday.

As Lincoln says if you're a road racer you definitely don't need to buy *any* oval tracks, I only own one oval (Milwaukee Mile) besides the two that are free with iracing, and that's only because I enjoy running the Star Mazda there each season since it's such a fun race with a lot of roadies taking the week off and oval guys coming in for the one race to try the open wheel car for that week so a lot of good interaction and learning from both camps, but there's certainly nothing that requires any road racer to buy any oval tracks at all, and the road season schedules even accommodate this by allowing for a couple of drop weeks within the championship if you don't own a track or real life causes you to take a week off.

BTW I don't even own all of the road tracks either, Barber is a track that hasn't been used much in the D/C/B level seasons I race in so far and so I haven't yet purchased it waiting for the time when I really need it.

I'm really looking forward to all the new tracks this next year especially this and the international ones, I think we have enough new cars for now, but tracks really continue to add to the sim without dividing the active driver population.

billsmithem: And that is why I’m not on iRacing – it costs a small fortune to acquire all the tracks and cars.

You purchase what you need... Doh!

Who goes into a restaurant and say's, "How much would it cost to purchase every meal on this menu?". Then finds out and say's. "Come on kids. We can't eat here it's too expensive". :)

That's a pretty worn out argument and I'd wager it was why the question was asked by the other poster about the costs... If it's too expensive for you fine, but the argument that you "need" every piece of content makes sense for about 1% of the iRacers. Maybe 20 in 15,000 iRacers actually race that many cars and tracks. Sure, some have purchased that many, but that doesn't mean they actually use them more than for a few test laps.

On the other hand, it may surprise you, but for some people $200 isn't a small fortune. I expect you might have spent that much for your wheel and pedals or maybe you're driving with the keyboard to save money.

carbonfibre: It’s a shame most of them are ovals though, does anybody know how much would it cost to own the whole collection then?

It's only a shame if you don't like oval racing. I'm a road racer, so I understand, but I don't consider it a shame... ;-)

There are 23 oval tracks, so yeah there are more of those now, but some of the ovals have road tracks too like Indy, Lowes, Homestead etc. Most are $11.95. Some are $14.95 depending on how many configurations they have. If you wanted all 23 oval tracks it would be a little $200 with discounts and including the free ovals, Lowes, South Boston and Lanier. Less if you used credits like the $40 participation credit. Less again if you are a road racer. Again it's about quality. If you want free get rFactor with a mod track.

Most people don't need all the oval tracks though, because you wouldn't run the COT at South Boston. ;-) Most series run 12 tracks.
