iRacing.com – First Williams FW31 Render

iRacing has released a first render of the most-anticipated content addition to their online racing simulation – The Williams FW31 Formula One car.

The car is planned to be available by the end of the current iRacing season in ten weeks time, giving sim racers the first ever chance to drive a laser-scanned Formula One car.

Driven by Nico Rosberg & Kazuki Nakajima, the FW31 was powered by a Toyota V8-engine and was one of the first cars to make use of the controversial rear diffusor in the early parts of the 2009 season. Rosberg managed to clinch 34.5 championship points, helping Williams to a 7th place in the manufacturers championship.

  • Koen Calleyl

Car looks nice – poor render

  • stabiz

Uh, no. old indycars (early 90`s) looked good, but todays look like they already have had an accident.

  • F1lover

    Your kidding right…
IRL cars look like WEDGES not definition at all… F1 car are much more gracefull and have better lines IMO…

  • Harpo245

I hope it’s just the render that’s bad. Well, back to FSONE :)

  • Vince

Only a complete douche would pick a car to race based on a render. The lighting may be somewhat poor in the render but the car will be spectacular. Thankfully people as dumb as you will still be playing wikifactor racing mods.

Stay in the kiddie pool moron.

  • rich1701

I hope FSONE revise their williams shape. In real terms the nose is 4 or 5cm too low.

  • Wesley

and your point is? Isnt playing rFactor allowed anymore? That you dont play it doesnt mean others arent allowed to, dumbfuck. Go wank on your 5$ iRacing cars and tracks and your 150$ subscription.

  • Harpo245

Yup, I play FSONE. I can’t exactly play iRacings version. You’re talking as if I didn’t try something that is relased because to my knowledge, it is not.

My sincerest apologies for not taking virtual representations on car as seriously as you do.

Where in my comment did I say “THAT CAR IS AWFUL LULZ!!11!1!”? All we have to go by is one rubbish render. Who’s to say it won’t be terrible Mr. Vincent?

I´ve asked Rubens Barrichello in the Barrichello Kart Day at Sao Paulo if he has ever raced iRacing and he didn´t know “what it was”. Then I went to explain to him what iRacing is and then he remembered knowing that some “racing game company” was developing “a race game” with the “old” car.

I told him it was a simulation software for PC and that it would be great if he tried it and compared it to real Williams F1. He was not that much interested but accepted trying it out when out but the problem I´m not his best friend and I´m not sure when I´ll get to meet him again. Anyway it would be great to see what an F1 driver like Rubens had to say and in a totally unbiased approach. I know that Dale Jr. loves iRacing but he is sponsored by iRacing and since the assassination of his father he has lived in a totally distant world.

I´ll try my very best to meet Rubens again after FW31 is out and if I do so I´ll record everything including his view of iRacing and the FW31 and share it here. Anyway I know some people who are good friends of his and one way or the other I have high hopes he will try this out!

  • Kimi R.

I’m sorry you had to let Fernando by Felipe.  Also, too bad about getting hit in the head with Ruben’s spring.

  • felipe

I´m too sorry you were fired by the same team to make room for fernando :(

About the F1 car: The guy at Williams who has single handedly made Williams’ in-house simulator for the past decade has helped them a ton with the physics, including the feedback he gets from the real world drivers on the Williams simulator vs the Williams car.

So, I assume we can expect this car to handle as realistically as the Skippy (iRacing’s Dave Kaemmer has raced them a ton and won many real life races in them) and the Dallara (Justin Wilson regularly contributes feedback to improve it)

  • felipe

    fingers crossed :)

  • Paul Kelly

Junior is NOT sponsored by iRacing. He has worked with the company for a few years now gratis, I believe.

The render only looks “poor” due to the lack of shading around the bottom of the sidepods. That’s it. The Model is still spot on, and that is what matters for graphical standpoints.

  • Empty

So, you were 100% positive that he was talking about iRacing, right?

I mean, there is zero chance that he was just talking so he didn’t look like a fool, right? Right?

From your post, certainly doesn’t seem so.

  • felipe

I believe he knew or heard something/anything or else how did he know it was the “old car”. BTW Rubens impressed everyone out there with his knowledge and guidance with some unbelievable tips and knowing a guy like Haikonnen became 2 titles world champion and Rubens never won a world title just goes to show some of the flaws in F1!

  • Empty

    Haikonnen?

    Kika Haikonnen?

  • stabiz

I didnt get that. Hakkinen is clearly one of the best drivers in recent years, so how is it a flaw that he won titles? Rubens usually gets beaten by his team mates, post Stewart.

  • Jack B

Not sure why you the render bums you out, so I thought I’d check out the FSONE images from Virtualr.  Trolling or jumping into a thread to give negative comments is not my style, so I didn’t comment in that thread, but here it is.  http://www.virtualr.net/fsone-2009-1-0-released/

I will say, that as far as graphics go, I find the rFactor graphics cartoony compared to iRacing and the FSONE images aren’t very impressive next to iRacing’s laser scanned Williams.

We can have different opinions about beauty, but I’ve voiced my opinion on this subject.  I won’t try to start anything in FSONE threads though.  Enjoy FSONE.  Graphics aren’t everything, so regardless of what I think of FSONE graphics, if you enjoy it, that’s what matters.  Carry on.

  • Paul Kelly

Rubens is a super-nice guy. But that doesn’t make him a better driver than either Hakkinen or Raikkonen.

Mika and Kimi both have a world title in their pocket, and both have more career victories than Rubens.

    End of argument.
