iRacing.com – First Mid Ohio Previews

iRacing.com has released the first previews of an important upcoming addition to their online racing simulation – The Mid Ohio Sports Car Course.

The track is very well known in the sim racing community thank’s to Virtua_LM’s splendid version for various platforms, you can find three previews of iRacing’s version at 65% completion below.

Opened in 1962, the 3.8 kilometer track has seen its share of sports car history, hosting notable Group C, Camel GT, Grand Am and American Le Mans Series races just to name a few. Even open wheelers are no strangers to the track as the CART championship and the IRL have hosted races at Mid-Ohio.

will be interesting comparison to Virtual LM. obviously the biggest difference is the color.

Love to see a side by side video when its released to compare it to VLM’s version. Being laser scanned i’m curious to see how close VLM got.

I love this track so much!

    WOW, indian summer :sd:

Before I started sim racing I had never heard of this track and to this day most of my friends have no clue about this track BUT it´s definately one the best tracks ever it´s in my top 3. iRacing needs badly a proper proto car a Le Mans prototype enough of stock cars this track is perfect for Le Mans series I had a 3 hours Endurance Series race day/night and it´s still the best race I ever had in sim racing!

iRacing we need the Le Mans protos and day/night racing at this track! I bet this would let the cash flow in for you guys too!

Nope. Still not buying into it. I disapprove of the subscription business model. Lovely track though.

Did VLM laser-scan the surface? That will be the biggest difference.

Agree, Felipe. I would love to run the 2003 Bentley Speed 8 here! Or why not a Porsche 962 to join the Lotus 79 in iRacing’s vintage car ranks?

I think that’s largely due to VirtuaLM’s talent. Still, I could not agree more.

    I like iRacing’s textures more than Virtua_LM’s.

Yep, I’m one of these guys who’s heard about the track the first time when VLM released their version. I think part of the reason for it is the fact that although the track was built in ’60s, the fastest machines of the golden era never raced there (Ca-Ams, F1s…), so compared to Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca, Bridgehampton, Riverside, Road America and others, it never got famous amongst motorsport enthusiasts from both sides of the Atlantic.

    Cheers – Art

I only know this track from the Indy/Champ Car races in the 90ies, when they were broadcasted on Eurosport … and it was one of my favorite tracks in Indy Car Racing I&II.

I know the track from watching ALMS, GrandAm, CART and SCCA Runoffs there. The layout is a blast. I used to run another version of it before VLM’s and even then I loved the track. But I have to agree that VLM’s version is what attracted the masses of SimRacers. It is sad because there are TONS of tracks that are just as fun that don’t get as much play time. Some may look like crap but are still a blast to drive. My league runs a massive variety of tracks and our servers are always open to the public while we aren’t racing. But I am amazed at how idle the servers are until we run one of the handful of “popular” tracks. People really miss out by spending all their time rotating between 5 tracks.

I think part of the blame goes to Megane Cup as it got most people used to racing very few tracks so even if they run Endurance Series they want only few tracks! I´m many times also amazed by leagues that run always the same tracks for a Clio race as well for a Prototype race.
Just check which tracks the Le Mans P1 raced last season in R2P Long Beach Singapore St Petersburg street tracks for gods sake  COMPLETELY out of context where as cars like the Alfa 147GTR raced at Rouen-Les-Essarts ’70
Choosing tracks and cars that match are a big part of making the race and track enjoyable and some leagues are very incompetent when it comes to doing so!

ALMS raced at Long Beach April 16-18 2010 :sd: But i do get your point felipe

  • Paul Kelly

ALMS raced at St. Petersburg and Long Beach in 2009, Felipe, so that track selection wasn’t as crazy as you think.

I don’t get to watch ALMS but it becomes even worse now knowing the real thing run these tracks :weird: what freak show!

I loved the VirtuaLM version of Mid-Ohio for GTR2! Really looking forward to this one!

Now get ready for the “real” deal scanned Mid Ohio :)

  • mbeast

Can’t wait to get running with the Lotus here. T1 should be epic

  • fpol

Not sure why i have a fascination with Mid Ohio (nothing to do with VLM…I loved it before) but I do. It doesn’t necessarily provide great racing – hard to pass – but it’s a brilliant drivers track, so perhaps that’s the reason why.

Will be interesting to see if VLM got all but the nuances right, or if they missed some major issues (scenery is off the table since VLM went for a period backdrop). If iRacing gets Lightning in NJ done soon, every track on my trackday agenda here in the Mid A/North East and beyond will be in the sim!

You’ve must put on a show for the people, and in American road racing, the people come to street races. There are exceptions, like Daytona and Sebring.

But street races are the most popular with the general American sports fan due to the party atmosphere and close proximity of the racetrack to major population centers.
