iRacing.com – Crew Chief Voice Control Available

Trevor Hunt has come up with a very interesting idea for iRacing subscribers, using the freeware tool GlovePIE.

Check out the demo video below as Trevor shows up how to call for pit stops and setup changes using voice control instead of keys, allowing him to keep his hands on the wheel all the time.

Trevor has released a matching GlovePIE script that works as shown above along with documentation to get you started, iRacing subscribers can check out his release here.

What a great utility!  A bit funny that Trevor forgot some of his own commands, but he made the video the night after he created the commands, so it’s understandable he forgot.  I imagine with a bit of practice and a cheat card by your monitor this would be really helpful.  I’m awful at using the keyboard while driving.   :)

The video also does a good job of showing the great cockpit lighting from the Richmond night track.  It also briefly shows the Split Times system and how some of the other in car options work.

    Nice work Trevor!

This utility would be great for rfactor

Seconded, just what I was thinking when I saw this!

Exactly what I was thinking! Is there some similar utility now? I suppose there is not…

There was something similar included in Spotter Plugin for rFactor. Don’t have mic myself and the voice recognition part of the plugin would start messing with my settings nevertheless, so I get rid of that functionality. So something like this was tried but the development of this plugin is stopped AFAIK and the author of the code won’t release source.

I’d still have to slow down to concentrate on what settings I wanted and remember the right codes.  In real life, doesn’t the crew chief decide stuff like fuel, tire pressure, etc.

  • JackB

Well, if you have to slow down to decide what to say, then you probably have to slow down at least as much maybe more to use the keyboard.  That’s my issue.  I can say, “Fuel half a tank” or “Tire Pressure Left Front Down 2 lbs” a lot easier than I can fiddle with the menus on a keyboard.

I would like see a crew chief make suggestions for all kinds of things though, like tire pressures, fuel, race strategy etc.  Then maybe you can agree by saying “OK” or over-ride and make your own changes.

Until then though, this is really helpful for those of us who can’t drive and type at the same time.   :)

Of course this tool will also do the job in rFactor – GlovePIE is not an iRacing-Tool. Yesterday I tried to use GlovePIE in rFactor and it worked (it will also work in GTR2, Evo and all other programs as well). You also don’t have to start the windows voice recognition each time, the voice recognition  just has to be started once at the beginning to setup your microphone. Using Vista Home (like me)  you are forced to use  commands in your local language (e.g. for me it is german) because the english voice revognition is not implemented. So as I said: it works fine in rFactor as well ;)

Thats great news that glovePIE works in rfactor. Can this software from iracing be mimplemented into rfactor .How much will it take to get this working for rfactor!

Brilliant idea, another way to imerse yourself in a sim :)
