Impressive Formula Motion Simulator Rig – Video

While you probably think “I have a pretty sweet sim rig at home”, it turns out that you don’t, at least not compared to GreyWolf as a new video shows.

The video below shows GreyWolf ‘s home simulator, consisting of a life-size Formula monocoque with Ferrari paint job and Formula wheel with working display, all put on what looks to be a DBOX motion system.

The result is a very impressive simulator, especially considering it’s for home usage. To make all us regular sim racers feel a little less bad, GreyWolf isn’t exactly a regular sim racer but working for DEM Racing Simulators and taking some of the work home seems to be one of the perks!

One of these days I should write an article about ‘motion’ because it seems like another expensive way to do practically nothing, yet it is the holy grail in the minds of too many simracers! I am fascinated how this can be the case. What you see most of the time is a hugely expensive way to perhaps add a nudge of immersion, often providing inverted motion cues..

Please do, i’d be happy to publish it here :)

Its amusing to me how the immersion that this rig provides will be almost totally negated by having the screens half a mile away.

The motion response will probably be way to slow to be of any use especially for faster cars.

I think a tight sim rig with decent screens set close to the user ,with proper FOV ,plus a good sound system and maybe the addition of a but kicker would offer as much if not more for a fraction of the cost. That and having a good FFB wheel and a pc that can run the game at 120FPS or so.

    Looks a bit pathetic really..

.. not that I have the kind of money it would cost..

yeah but you have to admit that motion rig simulating only rear traction loss is an interesting version of motion platform ;)

    The video is shocking!
Also if you got the room and money to have a setup like this, why wouldn’t you invest in getting those screens setup up A LOT closer first?
Overall not impressed I’m afraid and I’d love a motion setup, or triple screens for that matter lol.

For how far away those screens are, they’d need to be at least twice as large. I really couldn’t play this way, but to each his own. It doesn’t look as if those motors are very fast, so they could possibly only simulate motion or perhaps small changes in the road.

Not really at all, looks quite damn sexy imo.

I agree with the screen part they could be a bit bigger and they need to be closer. The rest, I dont really get what you’re trying to say, “they could possibly only simulate motion”?.

  • http://www.virtua-lm.com/ GTFREAK

What I mean is it looks like it might not be able to simulate every single motion. Meaning very huge changes in the road or massive crashes, things like that. It looks like it might only be good for subtle changes in direction such as steering left or right or breaking/accelerating. There were bumps at the end but they don’t look to be very strong or “quick”.

I’m not there, and I don’t own one so I can’t give you a 100% accurate opinion. I can only comment on what I saw.

I think most of the actual physical body movement of the car is cool, bit of body roll in change of direction, weight transfer under breaking & tight corners, I dont think Formulas ones move around a whole lot, pretty low and stable.

    Well I think its AWESOME!

It looks neat….but not much motion happening with it. Looks like it’s picking up rumble more than anything else.

Hi Niels, any thoughts on Occulus the new VR Goggles coming out. Do you think this will replace triple screens for most? Thanks Serge

I’ve understood that ‘motion’ for a lot of people means something more powerful.
But what i see it’s not static, is in motion.
A bit fancy but if you remove gforces, that’s close, having in mind the F1 suspensions travel.
Anyway i really hope they don’t have neighbours, seems pretty noisy, i don’t understand if it’s a huge subwoofer or are the rams.
