HE Sim Pedals Unveiled

Most community members know Niels Heusinkveld as the physics mastermind behind Reiza Studios and several rFactor mods. But Niels is also a sim racing hardware engineer and he’s just introduced a brand new set of pedals.

Named the HE Sim Pedals, the stainless steel pedals are aimed at sim racing professionals, coming with lots of sophisticated features.

Features

  • CNC laser cut stainless steel ultra-strong, stiff and durable construction
  • No wearing potentiometers or sensitive hall sensors
  • Load cells on all 3 pedals for excellent durability and linearity with no moving parts
  • 12 bit (4096 step) electronics (actual range depends on pedal travel and desired brake force)
  • Adjustable travel by independently adjustable ‘up’ and ‘down’ stops
  • Adjustable damping on all pedals
  • Greatly adjustable pedal feel and required effort
  • Adjustable pedal face ‘upright’ angle -3, 0 and 3 degrees
  • Adjustable pedal height in 5 steps for foot size 5 to 13
  • Solid individual cables from pedal to electronics box

Niels has released a very detailed product brochure that you can check out here.

Six sets of pedals are available for sale, selling for 799€ (throttle and break pedals) and 1149€ (throttle, break + clutch) respectively.

Seems like a very nice piece of kit! I’ll stick with the club sports though, don’t have any spare organs to sell… :P

    Very cool…

Part of me loves this sort of stuff I love haptic devices in general and the future for haptic devices is incredibly exciting.

I also love simulation, Its a largely unrecognised art form and I would argue its the contemporary equivalent of Realism painting.

So to be clear I’m not against “better” hardware I can see how a decent FFB wheel can make things more enjoyable and how these peddles will certainly help make things seem more convincing.

But at the same time I cannot help but feel that its futile , at least for the next 40 years or so.

In the end due to limitations in the software and total lack of G’s driving simulators and driving games are more abstract from real world driving than they are concrete , as a result regardless of the quality of peddles or servo wheel it will fundamentally be abstract from the real activity.

That doesn’t invalidate simulators/driving games as a training tool and it doesn’t invalidate ones personal enjoyment of using a 30k set-up over a £500 one , it also doesn’t invalidate simulators as an enjoyable thing in and of themselves.

But what it does do is maybe make us think of what we are trying to personally achieve when playing a driving simulator.

With the current software peddles like this and evan a 15k Servo wheel though closer to the real world in some ways , will likely have a negligible impact on the aspect of side to side racing which for me and I’m sure many is one of the most enjoyable aspects of racing.

We have seen that often competive drivers tend to race with FFB set to very low and when it comes to the raw competitive side of simracing more realistic input devices in some ways can make the user perform slower.

Having said that If I got these pedals and a servo wheel for Christmas I would be very happy indeed and would get enjoyment from them regardless of the absurdity of it all.

I like to think that maybe in the future after all this tinkering and trying to copy reality something new will emerge, a sport that takes many of the principles the depth of how cars move but then does something that solidifies it more as an activity in and of itself rather than something trying to be what it can never be.

the haptic feedback but without the cost or geographical issues that are found in real world motor sport.

Some might argue that that future is already here

    Very expensive…

They must be taking up a lot of space where Niels works I’m sure some of us could help him reduce the clutter.

According to brochure Niels is selling only 6 units.
Price is very steep but it looks like extremely solid pedal set with tons of adjustments.

YES!!! But I also want his steering wheel …please.

LOL i agree bro, would be an awesome buy tho.

You will have to contact Leo Bondar and give him bag of money, I think Niels is also using leo’s load cell interference controller for pedal set.

I think that simracing is already a sport/hobby in its own right. At least for some of us has already crossed that threshold from trying to imitate motorsports to being its own activity.

However, the basic rules, driving a thing on wheels as fast as possible either point to point or around a track, will never be very different from the originating sport. I think they have already tried giving users missile and machine guns but most of us don’t like them. I don’t see what would make it different enough aside from our own perception of the sport.

if we as a community decide it’s a sport in its own right, then it is.
The effort of trying to approach the behaviors of the real cars is simply a part of the enjoyment, but only the very deluded would think that driving F1 2012 would qualify you for a seat at Red Bull.

There is no doubt the sport is fun. It can be satisfying and in the scheme of things is also very affordable. Try golf and let me know which is more expensive in the long run.

    Hmmm.. looks really cool.
    Perfectly engineered.
But bit out of my league.

Happy with my CST’s as they are.

Impressive engineering, if I had not already got a new set of modded ClubSport V2 Pedals and these where X-Box compatible (along with PC and PS3) I would have bought a set!

For the hardcore PC sim racer this must be one of the best pieces of hardware out there!

Nice set of pedals, but they are definitely out of my league. I’m sure they will sell very quickly, but not to the average gamer. I am also developing a set of pedals, but they will be a lot cheaper, of course. Good luck Neils! They will definitely sell like mad!
