Group B Rally Physics by Niels Heusinkveld – Video

A few weeks ago, physics guru Niels Heusinkveld shared some videos of his work on WRC rally physics in rFactor.

Now, Niels has moved to something even more spectacular, tackling physics for the most powerful rally cars ever – Group B.

Below is a video of his new physics in action, showing Audi’s legendary turbo-powered S1 rally car.

    Looks great!! rF2 please!! :)

looks very good from here, but what track is it :) i like it

  • Niels Heusinkveld

its Ilirska Bistrica Pro which I think I simply got form rfactorcentral. Well made track!

Still looks a bit like driving on snow more than tarmac (looks littlebit slowmotionish and too slippery compared to youtube videos of the real thing), but again that is what you get with rFactor and it’s tiremodel..
Did some testing with rallycross-type tires myself few years ago and found out that you can get it tighter on tarmac, but then it starts to kill you with the pendulum.

Nice to see that the virtual S1 quattro is as understeery pig as the real thing was :D

I probably don’t even have enough weight on the front yet either.. It has some grippy tires though, 1.3G max braking and cornering, 0..60 in 2.3 seconds including a gear shift, if anything I’d say grip is on the optimistic side (not for 2012 hillclimbs but for 1986 era rally tires on dusty roads..)

Impressive video! It looks as realistic as it can get in rF, I suppose.

  • Dani .

I think by the video the tail, is too slippery, and the car in general a bit light. But is near! very near! Continue developement physics Niels!!!

I don’t get these comments. If it’s setup correctly, rfactor is as good as any sim to date and can feel pretty damn close to rf2. Just try Niels corvette for proof of how outstanding and capable it can be compared to most other sims.

Very good! Where down this physic? :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/juha.mikkola.98 Juha Mikkola

As Niels said for a dirty dusty tarmac the grip should be correct, but as you can’t see the dust or the dirtyness you just compare it to clean grippy tarmac. So in this case the numbers tell whats what and i stand corrected :)

Next thing we need is dust plugin to lift it up in the air from the road, and also those crazy people standing in the way :D

the driver does not seem to have handbrake…

looks great so far. its hard to tell from exterior how its like to drive. have you made it so that you need to stomp on the thottle and brake at the same time in order to get it sideways? hope your getting advice from mr stig blomqvist lol

do you plan to do a prospeed hillclimb version of the s1 phyics?

Actually drivers did not use handbrakes in Group B era.

    Completely agree with you mate!

wow, this is sth i did not know about GroupB, thank you for pointing this out, anyway the real footage of group b cars shows they had much less understeer than in this rFactor video

  • spamsac

A statement like that makes little sense. The S1 had a heavy inline 5 out over the front axle. The T16, for example, had a smaller, lighter, transversely mounted inline 4 mounted with the gearbox midship.

The S1 understeered like a bitch and required massive skill and commitment to throw around like the greats did.

The GrpB cars varied massively, and Audi were constantly struggling with handling compared the smaller, better balanced T16.

I’ve seen one of these run in the flesh, and “hustling” doesn’t come close to describing the driver input required.
