Gran Turismo 5 – Two Driver Animations Videos

Two new videos  of Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 5 for the Playstation 3 have surfaced, showing the driver animations in a new demo build of the much-anticipated console racing title.

The videos show the title’s detailed driver model in action during a race on the Tokyo street circuit as the driver can be seeing steering, shifting and looking around.

Gran Turismo 5 will be bringing 1000 cars and over 60 tracks to the Playstation 3, including new features such as damage, weather and day/night effects. There’s no date for either the release of the Japanese or the International versions yet.

While that is pretty cool I have to wonder what was the point. Just seems like a waste of dev time to me. In normal driving views you won’t see any of this.

For replays, as they can be uploaded directly to youtube. When a developer has 80 Million Dollars to burn they are going to spend it in places like these. As much as I hate all the delays for GT5 I hope it turns out as great as all the hype suggests it should. With every month passing the graphics seem less and less spectacular, they probably realised they are making a PS3 sim and not a sim on PC where they can have Lots of 16x Anisotropic Filtering and Anti-Aliasing.

And Yes “Felipe” I got a PS3 recently and I can say it has only over-hyped games that I have no interest in and that is why it is in 3rd place in the console wars. GT5 is the reason I payed 102 pounds for a 250 GB PS3 Slim so that I can enjoy the hype without unbiased eyes that I had when I only had an Xbox 360 and a very capable PC.

Where did you buy a PS3 slim for only 102 pounds?

Montoya: Where did you buy a PS3 slim for only 102 pounds?

Sold some of my old PC Games after noting down the serial numbers and had to pay only 102 pounds more at CEX.

You called me so here I am! :sd: it’s so good to have all consoles and a great pc that leave us totally unbiased and free to speak the truth! You have all the right to detest any PS3 game you want to

I’d like to see similar detail in rf2

  • Sensekhmet

    1. Elevator music in the second video.
    2. Something’s really wrong if you have to lean off the seat to shift gears.
    3. First video confirms what I feared: you buy any GT game, you risk being associated with nerds who masturbate over every single frame and every 1986 Civic version in the game.
    4. The end of the first video looks just like Test Drive Unlimited. Where’s the violent wank-off graphics?
    5. I still consider getting it once PS3’s become affordable-ish to me :D

  • Gaiajohan

The seating position compared to shift knob isn’t right. Usually you should easily be able to get yer hand to the shift knob without having to sit differently. How much pain in the back several real world drivers would have if they’d have to do that?

The guy should’ve moved the seat forward a bit :) Still, it’s pretty amazing detail considering that in other sims/games, you can barely see the driver. Here’s another video- replay of Petronas Tom’s SC430 and at 1:20 you’ll see a much better seating/shifting position: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ec22608Lf0

And here’s a more standard cockpit view of the same car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NIqf1Vk-24

He’s even blinking his eyes :) Again the cockpit view at 2:20 in the ARTA NSX is quite astounding. And as I pointed out in the Team RMT Super GT mod, Polyphony got the movement (animation) of the Super GT cars spot on: the combination of high grip and an almost twitchy handling of these cars.

  • Sensekhmet

    I’ll nitcpick more:
    1. That C4 WRC looks like it’s in gravel configuration (check out the ride height and the height of tire sidewall).
    2. Shift paddles in rally cars are made in such a manner as to ELIMINATE the need to move anything save for a single finger (or two) to shift. Moving the whole hand to do it is both stupid and incorrect.
    3. If you are using a race seat and harness and still move side to side in corners as shown in the video, your shoulder belts are VERY loose. Actually, if the seat is matched to the driver correctly even without the seatbelts (or with standard street belt: I use one for everyday driving and switch to harness for racing) you fit so tight you pretty much don’t move side to side at all.
Stupid nitpicking? Maybe. But with all the mega-uber-l33t hype you’d think they’d get those things right.

Man that isn’t nitpicking it’s just being plain stupid when you don’t have anything to say. Only thing GT5 “might” loose is in it’s physics department yet that is still unknown as we didn’t try the game.
I just can’t imagine how many bad things this list would be it would surpass the thousands if your “nitpicking” was applied to iRacing, Simbin, rFactor or LFS!
Can’t affort it and want to bash it please wait the game is released and talk about the physics as that would be subjective for each person and your last resort!

  • drdryvillage

The driver in iracing is static  It looks bad in replays, but I don’t subscribe to watch replays. I don’t care a lot for this feature, but of course everything has its importance to create de illusion.

OK, I will make the same list for the games you mantioned.
There, I’m done. They have none of the issues you can see in these videos.
It’s clear that you, felipe, are having some mental issues.
What are you trying to say? Pointing out obvious errors, visible to all is supposed to be more stupid than discussing such subjective things as physics and handling (which are, so to speak ‘not here yet’)?
I will ignore your ‘can’t afford’ comments.

The only one acting plain stupid is you. Look, Polyphony actually implements these things, but imo if you do it, do it right. And as Sensekhmet says, no other sim has implemented these features. But why shouldn’t he be allowed to complain?

Oh, I’m suddenly also a guy who can’t afford a PS3. Of course.. That’s why there’s sitting one on the right of me with currently FIFA10 in it, and GT5 prologue somewhere stashed in a closet.. That’s why there’s a PS2, Gamecube, NES, SNES and N64 in another room, and that’s why the PS3 is sitting on my X360, in front of my computer.
I’m too poor to understand how brainwashed you are by Polyphony.

What you’re pointing is pretty obvious and anyone who remotely familiar with auto-racing should be able to see the discrepancy between what’s in the game and reality. But then anyone can nitpick. What you need to consider is the amount of compromise that’s needed and necessary to a game developer.

Take for example the paddle-shifting animation. The first I would advise is to look at other games: Forza 3 and NFS SHIFT are good example. Without going into details, the animation in these two games are exactly as you pointed out: a simple movement of the finger. Here’s a good example (from Forza 3, a Nissan GTR): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPGLew1wU4w
On the GTR, the paddle shift is column mounted meaning that it’s stationary (ie. it doesn’t move with the wheel). At around 35-45 seconds, you’ll see a few downshift/upshift motions- inconspicuous finger animation. None of them are actually touching the paddle and there’s no motion in the paddle shifter themselves.

From what I can surmise- Polyphony decides to make the movement more conspicuous and to make sure that the hand/finger is actually moving the paddle. This video shows a good example of GT5 shifting animation (Ferrari 458, column mounted paddle shifter : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T751E4eXHZQ It also allows shifting in mid-turn (or when the hand is away from the shifter). It’s not the most realistic looking movement but compare to what you would find in Forza 3 or SHIFT, it’s not a fake shift.

Nitpicking is pretty easy but trying to understand why things are the way they are, require a bit more effort. I guess the phrase, The perfect is the enemy of the good, is fitting

  • racedriver

It is nice that devs are taking time for all these things.

I think for most part it is most accurate than any other racing game. But I also do not like gear shifting animation. Paddle shift looks little weird and for the conventional gear shift I think the drivers take too much time and in many videos that I have seen he steers the car in one hand haha

Lol at all those who are complaining about driver seating and other stupid things. get a life. In PC sims ghost drives the car

You are totally right. But hing is, the hype around GT5 suggests that both development time and money are unlimited. Such things seem to indicate otherwise, hence my cynism.

No, you get a life. Or better yet, go racing so that you will see how things look and feel in reality.
