Gran Turismo 5 GT Academy Demo – Gameplay Video

Posted on December 14th, 2009 in

Following first preview shots that revealed the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 GT Academy demo, here’s first moving footage of the Nissan 370Z at Indy.

Scheduled to be released this Thursday, the demo will allow all Playstation 3 owners in Europe and Australia & New Zealand to fight for their place in the GT Academy held at Silverstone in March were the quickest driver will leave with a fully-paid season in the FIA GT4 Championship. North American racers are not eligible to compete for the real drive, the quickest of them can win Indianapolis 500 VIP tickets though.

The demo will include the Nissan 370Z road car as well as a tuned-up version of Nissan’s newest sports car that can be raced at Indianapolis. Below is a first gameplay video of the German GT Academy demo, showing a full lap around the brand new Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course that’s making its debut in the GT series.

Update: Even more preview material of the demo is pouring in, a gallery of both Nissans at Indy has been added below.

The only bad thing about this video is the driver! A part for that, it looks like the Gran Turismo we learned to know during this years: looking forward to it, as I already said! ^^

Will this be available in the U.S. as well?

    The first prize is incredible.
Who would ever have thought years ago that sim racing (no debates about if GT5 is a sim or not please) and real world racing could meld like this. Really quite impressive.

  4. JAGUAR1977

Unfortunately it’s been confirmed this shouldn’t be considered a GT5 demo, there’s no damage, not even the old build seen in videos, no head tracking, in fact nothing but revised physics.

Last year’s winner was a multiple karting championship winner and extensively experienced Formula Ford racer. No video gamer will win this, watch – whomever gets that season will have real life racing experience.

Yeah thats a real trend after only 1 year. Sim racers have beaten real life drivers on sims many times before. So unless you’re saying it’s fixed in some way which I have a hard time believing…

Contestants are not allowed to hold or have held a national or international racing license so participants can’t really have substantial racing experience.

The previous winner (Lucas Ordonez) met the GT Academy requirement of not being a racing license holder from any race organisation. The guy who was also picked (along with Lucas but he missed a few training days in the Academy leading to the Dubai race), Lars Schlomer is full time taxi driver in Germany (Berlin?). Yes, driving experience does matter but even more so is the ability to learn and adapt.

I was expecting more due to the 5 year development time but it looks slightly better if not the same as the current simulators and the physics look very weak.

New physics look quite good to me but the player isnt good enough to drive and whats wrong with oversteering? I love that!

The top times go to a shootout, it’s not the “fastest time wins the seat”, which would be driver selection suicide from their point of view. You don’t just hand away hundred-thousand-dollar racing seats. So yeah, it’s rigged, in that the examiners are looking for someone with skills. Someone who’s only ever driven fast in a game does not have what they’re looking for. 90% of driving a car well is knowing how it feels, and that is not something you get from a game, even with a hydraulic chair and a Frex. If someone comes along and has experience, even a tiny little bit, I guarantee you that they will pick them, no matter how much faster the other drivers are, provided Mr. Experience isn’t a dolt or unnaturally slow. My school is running a Formula 3 search in a couple days with Allan McNish, and in talking to the program directors I think I have a pretty good idea what they’re looking for. Outright speed is not top of the list.

I realize also that genetic freaks are possible and someone who is genuinely fast in a game may come along and just happen to have the innate traits they’re looking for, but that is pretty darn rare and in all likelyhood that kind of person would be racing already anyway. Speed just doesn’t translate across dimensions very well in most cases, and I’m living proof of that. I’m fast in real life, but by my own standards quite slow in video games.

The day when people will understand that graphic effects on these kind of games are not directly related to the input probably the whole community will make a big step forward.
It’s quite easy to understand that the little wheel rotation is done to prevent a terrible effect while playing with a pad.

You haven’t told me anything there that I don’t already know relating to driving.
Ive been driving for 23 years and I’m no slouch either (loving track days  ) and I’m well aware about getting feelings from the cars behaviour.

Anyway, whatever, I don’t care who wins or what their experience is. I just commented on what a great prize it is and yet people still find things to pick at.

Uhm, I don’t really want to go way off topic but the list of “amazing PS3 games” that aren’t available for Xbox 360 (where the multiplatform titles look better) is pretty short.

Until GT5 is out, there isn’t really any reason to buy a PS3 unless you want a BluRay player. When it comes to gaming alone, the Xbox can’t be beat…the online community system is much better, the console is cheaper…heck even the games are cheaper..and they do look better, watch comparison videos of multi-platform title.

The list of Playstation exclusives these days has gotten extremely short, that’s why there’s so much pressure on GT to be a fantastic game. It’s one of the few bullets Sony has left..

  19. felipe

I see in you a potential 360 fanboy Montoya  360 fanboys are totally blind from reality and thank god you posted something like this here where 99% of the people are only sim racers. I love every genre of games out there so I’ll name a few but don’t forget PS3 owners buy exclusives most multi-plat games are something of the past so here we go…
Uncharted 2 – Best looking game ever with amazing gameplay “tick”
Metal Gear Solid 4 – Exclusive to the PS3 “enough said”
Killzone 2 – If you played this and Halo you will know how superior this mighty FPS is after I played K2 all other FPS became so dull
inFamous – another great PS3 exclusive fantastic gameplay
SOCOM: Confrontation – great tactical shooter
Heavy Rain – soon will blow people away
    Resistance 1 n 2 – any day better FPS than any multi-plat
Final Fantasy Versus XIII – yes its an exclusive too :sd:
God Of War III – soon to be the best game ever

these are just few of soooooo many exclusives we get and all are just in a league where multi-plats don’t even come close although we could buy multi-plat games if we wanted too  btw multi-plat games are identical for both consoles now days and if devs take their time the PS3 version will look better any day!

Gran Turismo 5 won’t appeal to most PS3 owners it will appeal to fans of Gran Turismo series so definately it will have a huge impact at least 5 million copies will be sold and some people will buy a PS3 for it but games like Final Fantasy God of War The Last Guardian will be much appealing to guys who own a PS2 and are waiting to move to the only Full HD console!

I´m not really a gamer apart from racing so I can’t discuss these titles with you. The only one I know is Heavy Rain and while it looks impressive, it has the same problem as GT – It will be out some day…nobody knows when.

And I`m no fanboy at all, I´m not emotionally invested with any of these consoles unlike you who as you seem to be willing to defend the Playstation whatever it takes.

I bought my Xbox 360 when Forza came out and I will buy a PS3 once GT5 comes out provided it’s not utter crap. That’s how far my love for consoles go…

The PS3 may have the better hardware but what’s the point of having great hardware when barely any studios are able to take full advantage of it? PD is one of the few dev teams who seem to make most of the platform.

The real issue with the PS3 is how the multiplatform titles look. Most console games are released on both platforms and they do look better on the Xbox 360. So why would one buy a more expensive console to buy a more expensive game that looks better on another system?

And please, tell me where this is far away from reality. The web is full of comparison videos that prove my point. Some games look much worse on the PS3, others look almost as good. But almost none look better on the Playstation, rather weird despite it’s supposedly über-Hardware, don’t you think?

Again, I don’t even care for most games so this issue is in no way an emotional one for me. I just think you shouldn’t spread false info as somebody might end up making a buying decision based on what you say.

  23. Raikku

That’s right that PS3 has big issues with graphics in some games. AA and AF are very badly put into effect in so many games, especially in those multiplatform-games.

And, I have both consoles, dozens of games for them and I drive racing sims on pc-side(with lotsa eye candy…). So don’t tell me that I don’t know about graphics in those machines.

“We found that the Xbox 360 actually had better graphics in the majority of the games we compared.”

Web says Montoya is right. What he said was that the multiplatform games look better on the 360, which is almost a universally accepted fact. The PS3 does obviously have better hardware because games like GT5 can reach the full potential on the console and look much better than a game like Forza which is maxing out the 360.

As for the exclusive games themselves, All of the best 360 exclusives came and went 2 years ago IMO, excluding Forza 3.

PS3’s problem is that stupidly small graphical memory, that’s why game makers can’t put enough AA in their games.

    2009

  28. felipe

the xbox 360 came out 1 year ahead of the PS3 so if you see what the PS3 has achieved in 3 years surpassing the 360 in every major aspect including blowing away the 360 in graphics and with games with 256 players like MAG it’s quite an achievement. Also I don’t play scores :sd: all I know it’s the FACT PS3 delivers what it promises in every major gaming genre I can name over 10 games only possible for the PS3! I don’t play sales too :sd: I’m a gamer but still one year head start and the only place the 360 has sold more is in the US but with over 60% Failure Rate it’s hard to say how many it’s actually sales. If you are a casual gamer you buy a Wii if you are an hardcore gamer with all the best exclusives you buy a PS3 if you want a cheap console you buy an Xbox it’s sad to see the only reason people buy an xbox is because it’s damn cheap. Still the hardware sucks so does its limitations!

The 360 is the console of choice if your priority is FPS titles and online.

If however your tastes are a little wider the likes of Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, LBP, God Of War 3 and indeed GT5 make the PS3 the better choice, there’s also the issue of wheel support.

There was a time when 3rd party games looked better on the 360, now however it’s the exception, while the PS3 exclusives are begining to shine.

  30. Montoya

What you completely ignore is the fact that the Xbox 360 has a superb online-community with lots of cool features I would really dig if I would actually play online.

Xbox LIVE is really remarkable and definitely one of the reasons the console is such a success. Too bad you seem to be blinded by your love for the Playstation or the hatred towards Microsoft.

  31. ForzaBarca88

Just buy a Wii, you know you want to

I probably will get a PS3 when GT5 comes out – they seem to have made genuine progress and for a car nut its far too appealing. Don’t mind the fact that it plays blue-rays either :sd:

  32. felipe

    little correction Jaguar77 :sd:
The 360 is the console of choice if your priority is the Halo hype and that seems to be true with many people. Online the PS3 has surpassed the 360 over an year ago. PS3 has got dedicated servers with 256, 128, 64, 32 online players without lag as everybody connects to the servers with online racing games with 16 players while the 360 has what? 8 players online with lots of lag due to the fact it P2P connection and still you pay to play online what a joke!

JAGUAR1977: The 360 is the console of choice if your priority is FPS titles and online.

  33. zudthespud

Felipe, surely with all the bad publicity from the 50% failure rate of the 360 it’s doing much worse than it would normally? And the fact that it came out one year earlier surely explains why it it is behind on graphics?

As for “Delivering on Promises” Microsoft will fix any console with the RROD for free within 3 years of purchase, how is that breaking a promise? It has over 800 games, How is that “Not delivering”?

Considering that Sony have lost Metal Gear, Final Fantasy and Tekken as Exclusives they are in a much worse position than they should be in.

  34. felipe

Ok you think I’m blind! I ask you tell me one think Live has got the PSN hasn’t got and keep in mind the PSN is free while how much you pay use Live?! I think its exactly the opposite you name an xbox exclusive I name you 5 PS3 exclusives better than that game it’s the true!

Montoya: Xbox LIVE is really remarkable and definitely one of the reasons the console is such a success. Too bad you seem to be blinded by your love for the Playstation or the hatred towards Microsoft.

As far as I know Metal Gear Solid 4 is still an exclusive so will be the continuation to the story while Risen will be a side story and Final Fantasy XIII will be compressed for the 360 while Final Fantasy XIII Versus and Final Fantasy XIV will be PS3 exclusives but still how many new exclusive IPs we have got over 20! The 360 has got it’s merits but it’s not the hardware and it isn’t having the best games!

    zudthespud:
Considering that Sony have lost Metal Gear, Final Fantasy and Tekken as Exclusives they are in a much worse position than they should be in.

  35. zudthespud

OK Felipe we get it, you have been overcome by fanboy rage, get up from your desk, get a drink and calm down. Play a console racing sim! Oh wait, it’s not out yet. Oh well, you can wait, right?

  36. Montoya

Again, I´m not a gamer aside from racing so I can’t really get into the argument about exclusives and whatnot but I´m sure there are people here who do.

Who cares if LIVE costs a few bucks? Good things are worth to be paid for, but I guess we´re having the same discussion as on iRacing now. If you buy a 12-month code online, LIVE costs you less than three Euros a month!

And you get lots of cool features for that, a steadily update platform and everything works flawless. Playstation users on the other hand always seem to be waiting the longest for demos because their store is not updating, has not half the features etc. You see where I´m going at? Good things are worth money, free things aren’t automaticly good and commmercial services automaticly bad.

  37. felipe

The graphical differences between the 360 games and the PS3 games are not dramatic, but Montoya is correct. Instead of a single article from Gamespot on a single game, how about 100 games compared?

Eurogamer has a series of articles called “Face-Off Xbox 360 vs PS3″. They’ve been going on for a long time and focus on the same game graphically on the 360 and the PS3. The majority fair better graphically on the 360. Often it’s a tie or the 360 wins, but it’s generally not dramatic. Frame rate wins and some extra attention to detail are often what wins for the 360.

Here’s round 17, but you can find all the other rounds on the website. Each round compares about 5 games.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-360-vs-ps3-face-off-round-17-article

They’ve probably compared over 100 games. Enjoy.

  39. zudthespud

@Lincoln Miner, Just for the record Gamespot have done 5 or 6 comparisons each with about 8 games. The only game that I have seen that is better on the PS3 was Oblivion, but that can probably be explained byt he fact it came out a year later on the ps3.

  40. Lincoln Miner

Getting back on topic. I own a PS3 and have GT HD and GT: Prologue. I’ve read a lot on PD promises, but this video looks a heck of a lot like GT HD and GT Prologue.

Maybe the physics will be much better. Maybe they’ll remove the crazy online penalty system, but my guess is the career mode and most things will be structurally the exact same as they were in GT4. Sometimes I think the Japanese developers have been lost in time. Even the Japanese developers themselves have talked openly about how far behind they are from the Western developers.

Quite a switch from the PS1, PS2 days when Japanese developers had all the innovation. Now, they’re the ones sticking to the familiar. Goes in cycles I guess. If they get weather and damage, that’s a step in the right direction and 16 online is better than 8 for Forza, but I wonder how different GT5 will really be from GT Prologue or GT 4… It’s supposed to be released in March in Japan, so it’s almost finished. The North American and European release is delayed probably for localization.

I think the hype might actually hurt GT5 when it comes to review scores. GT4 only had a meta score of around 87. GT5 will be huge in terms of content, so that should help, but I think it will get graded down on innovation and gameplay. I think it will also struggle to deliver what people expect in online graphics and frame rate, due to their 16 car choice and 1080p.

Compared to Forza’s 8 cars online 16 sounds like a lot until you go to the PC sims with support for 40 or more cars and frame rates well beyond 60 frames per second.

If it has frame rate issues or only looks good in replays, they’ll get hammered for it. Should be interesting.

  41. Lincoln Miner

zudthespud: @Lincoln Miner, Just for the record Gamespot have done 5 or 6 comparisons each with about 8 games. The only game that I have seen that is better on the PS3 was Oblivion, but that can probably be explained byt he fact it came out a year later on the ps3.

I’ve read a ton of the Eurogamer comparisons over the past 3 years and I’d say it’s been about 4 to 1 in favor of the 360. Instead of 8 games, they’ve done about 100. They do a very good job on these articles.

Most of the time the PS3 would lose, because they PS3 port was based off the lead platform, which was the 360. The PS3 port would often be late or rushed and/or the developers wouldn’t have the required skill sets. The 360 has always been an easier environment to work in for developers. Unlike the pre-launch hype wars for both systems it’s been proven their architectures both have advantages. The 360 has come out ahead simply because it’s easier to develop for and has been the lead platform for more titles. Having a one year head start gave any title a better chance for sales on the 360, thus it became the lead platform.

    Here is the list.

GT5 has taken so long to come out that I’m tired of waiting for it and am no longer excited. It had better live up to the hype and produce an awesome driving experience and provide a more flexible online platform that allows for customizing and allows you to race who you want in private rooms. And now that I’ve been driving iRacing, I just may not be able to overlook the physics (expert or sim level) if they are not the absolute best of the consoles.

The level of detail in the graphics is awesome though, and this video reminded me of that. I’ll never forget the first time I did a replay and saw the individual blades of grass blowing when a car drove by and some of the spectators actual turning their heads and bodies to watch cars. Cool stuff.

Marc, yeah Gran Turismo and the consoles understand the little bits of flash, that give a sim ambiance, atmosphere, personality, etc. I’d say the GT series nails it better than any of them.

Too bad iRacing leaves that stuff out… I wish iRacing had animated pit crews and helicopters and just a bit of pre-race music (not during the race) or post race fanfare. Add in some Gran Turismo/console type atmosphere.

I suppose there is a trade off though. iRacing supports up to (depends on your hardware) over 60 frames per second with 43 or more drivers (Indianapolis has 54 pit stalls…) online at once. I believe GT5 is going to struggle handling 16 drivers at 60 frames with all the extra animations, flash ect. I think that’s why Forza 2 went with 8 drivers. They could only lock the frame rate at 60 with 8 drivers at once. I hope GT can pull off 60 frames locked without reducing the graphics quality, but my guess is online will get graphically scaled back to make 16 drivers work at 1080p.

I guess I just want it all in one package and we aren’t there yet! :-)

Meh, there is still not a single game on console that I want to play. All the proper games are on pc.

    - Sim racing

    - Silent Hunter series

    - Creative Assembly titles

    - Arma 2

    - Men of War

    - Red Orchestra

Platform wars are about as worthwhile as arguing over who has the sweetest smelling shit. You pay your money, you makes your choice. No need to get all proselytising about it.

 I was shocked to find that word in the dictionary. Guess I didn’t study hard enough when I was in school

A couple of video with the player using wheel (as oppose to the gamepad with the above video) although no real cockpit cam but in replay mode:

Nissan 370Z with road tires: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XvksBfIG8k

Tuned 370Z with racing tires: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XvksBfIG8k

You get the corresponding tires for the two different version of 370Z. Unlike Prologue, you only get to race in the Pro physics and with only sequential shifting. Your best times from both the tuned and the road version are added together to give you the total time.

    Here’s a quick slideshow from Taxigamer’s capture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/85327101@N00/sets/72157622878137125/show/

Both those links are identical. But the video looks great.

This does look really good. ok so the drivers wheel movements aren’t as animated as they should be in that he only turns the wheel a small amount. But it all looks good in the cockpit and the cars behaviour on track looks very believable as does the tyre squeal.

I wish PC’s had this game. I would love this but I wont buy a PS3 to play it :(

the tyre squel is improved nicely, but, it still happens too often, even when he’s go wide oval turn the tires squeel like hell??

oh edit button where art thy :p

Holy shit those youtube videos were much better. I think it’s worth buying a PS3 just for those driver animations. So they still can’t do the whole 900 degrees of steering like LFS but they got everything else done and more, his looking to apex is funny and that’s good because I recognise him “as a person” and not some static object.

Also this is one of the first GT5 videos with clear sounds at last! The 370Z sounds a bit too synthesized at times but there are also moments of lifelike impression at some spots, like the final drive-by. The sounds are also very airy, but that might be road noise.

The turbo sound is the same monotonous loud hiss as what’s been done before, nothing innovative there, not to worry on the stock model though.

They (Polyphony) had a full rotation steering (with overlapping hands and all) in one of GT preview version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DELTox3pwXo

You’ll see in around the 30s’ mark.

I’m pretty sure it was removed because it looks crappy. But those who knows racing, know that you don’t need the cross-arm manouver. Hopefully the proper steering will make into the final game.

I doubt anyone watching this would say the driver in the video is a talented sim driver, so is anyone else noticing the same thing I am.

Too bad they didn’t use the highest level driving physics with all aids off.

Once you start to spin, recovering is very difficult and requires quick reflexes and perfect countersteer, but this driver recovers from a bunch of spins in the video. Some are very far gone, yet he pulls it back. Way past the optimum slip angles. Given how he sets up turns and how bad his lines and overall driving are, no way this driver should be recovering from any spins, except in the rare case.

I don’t speak german, but does anyone know what driver setting he was using? It seemed incredibly forgiving.

If it’s the video at the top of the page- I do know that he’s just a journalist who got a preview of the demo, and that he was using a controller and his best time is a full 13 seconds slower (although he most have cut a corner somewhere hence the red mark on the timing) than the current fastest time is by a Portuguese guy using an english PSN account who did it using a G25 wheel.
