That's a fair and valid point. I'm forever messing with AI of force feedback settings. Re texturing tracks or painting cars.
At least with GT5 I've got one game I can't mess with. Just throw the disc in and away we go. I don't use it much these days granted with an active i-racing account but it's great for what it does and I'll certainly be buying the full game.

Spaceman:

Don’t talk daft man. So you’re saying a mod is released with poor car models, un-driveable physics and wonky AI then I should fix it myself?
Honestly hands up here who has ever done this? Pertaining rFactor you’d be here to eternity trying to fix 90% of the mods out there.
Granted I’m in a minority when I say I appreciate the work that goes into making a mod but I feel I speak for most when I say when a mod is in such a poor state I simply abandon it.

I should explain better as I think my comment came across wrong and I feel the point is still valid. It's the person not the mod, yes some mods suck and you shouldn't have to fix them. But at least we are given the opportunity to do something about it if should choose to. I wasn't having a go at you so please don't take offence. I have done quite a lot of messing about with rF and have fixed a lot of the crap I didn't like in some mods because I could. Ok, not everyone has the time or skills to do so, I will freely admit that. But the information and tools are there should others wish to learn more about the way the game works.

Don't judge just because we respect and enjoy something for what it is Sodapop. You're coming across as a right child with comments like those.
Right now I have an active i-Racing account with GTR2, RBR rally GT Legends and RFactor with over 20 gig of mods installed including pretty much the entire hall of fame over on RF Central.
Fact is you lament something simply for being on a console puts paid to any childish notion of "kiddie fanboyism"
Something that has taken almost 5 years to put together I'd hardly badge as a "name slapped on a package"
When you try GT5 with a G25 + H-Gate + auto clutch off you'll appreciate just how good this sim really is but to lament something for simply being a console game really does highlight what a silly little boy you really are.
So please leave the insults for the school yard as we all can band crass marks at one another.

idlejimbo:

Imagine what state the genre would be in if it weren’t for the original Gran Turismo. Even the mighty rFactor is influenced by it - the earning of credits and buying of cars/upgrades is due to Gran Turismo being such an influential game. Admittedly, that aspect of rFactor is just annoying, but that’s not the point!

The genre would be just fine with stellar entries such as GT legends, GTR, GTR 2, live for speed, Geof Crammond's games, and others that have nothing to do with Gran Turismo. In fact they are influenced by pc sims that preceded console sims. I suspect that fact is lost on fanboys like you and spaceman who are slaves to a name slapped on a package.

Really why would Kaz suggest that he wanted a GT for kids, a regular GT, and a GT for pros with physics that he didn't think the main GT audience would appreciate? Why do the fangirls gloss over this but yet are ready to believe it when Dan, from Forza 3, says something similar in autosimsport? Just pure kiddie fanboyism...

Sodapop:
Spaceman you would be better served going to GTplanet or Forza central and hanging around with the other clowns with “mad skillz.” Kaz and Dan, the producer of Forza 3, have both admitted that they have taken certain “liberties” with their games to make them more palatable to a larger audience. Such liberties are not taken with GTR 2 or rfactor. If you think the physics in the GT series even approach that of a mod like The Power and Glory for GTR 2, well you should start selling what you’ve been smoking.

Forza 3 I can believe but I didn't mention P&G2 did I?
But let us be frank, if you think GTR2 or rFactor realistic then a big slice hash cake is all yours my friend. In fact the case with rFactor, I'd argue 95% of mods out there are not accurate as mod teams don't have access to data.
Even P&G2 is a tweaked version of GT Legends.

I don’t expect GT5 to approach the best sim on the PC but that was never the raison d’etre for the series. The great graphics especially the replay- I can spend hours just enjoying the replays, the quirky gameplay- where you acquire license, race for money....

Sodapop, I'm another one of them clowns. I love GT ever since I splurged $500 on a PS2 bundled with a copy of GT3 circa 2000 (a week later the price of the PS2 was dropped to $249) but I started on the PC with Crammond's GP2 + 3 + 4, GP Legends. I still hook my G25 onto my intel macbook pro once in a while for GTR2 but PS3 serves as my main gaming machine. I don't expect GT5 to approach the best sim on the PC but that was never the raison d'etre for the series. The great graphics especially the replay- I can spend hours just enjoying the replays, the quirky gameplay- where you acquire license, race for money in order to buy cars, complete mission to win cars, it is Pokemon with cars and alongside Forza, it's the only game where production cars are featured in abundance- there's no other "sim" out there that would allow me to drive the same Acura NSX that I have IRL; Infact it's the car I spend the most time in GT5 Prologue (well, besides the Ferraris). In the end, GT are essentially games where you can kick back, relax and enjoy and now that I'm in my 30s, I'm no longer interested in being a pretend car racer.

And spaceman, sorry rF is only as good as the PERSON using it, not the mod. If the mod sucks, fix it. That is rF.

Don't talk daft man. So you're saying a mod is released with poor car models, un-driveable physics and wonky AI then I should fix it myself?
Honestly hands up here who has ever done this? Pertaining rFactor you'd be here to eternity trying to fix 90% of the mods out there.
Granted I'm in a minority when I say I appreciate the work that goes into making a mod but I feel I speak for most when I say when a mod is in such a poor state I simply abandon it.
Secondly I was comparing driving models to GT5. I've no idea were you got this notion from.

And finally, there will never ever be a PC version of GT5. Polyphony is a owned by Sony. Who here in their right mind thinks Sony will ever let their game or any of their games in fact to be released on a Microsoft powered PC for their competition to peruse at its pleasure?

If there is a pc version it might be worth it for fun, but it's a bit hard to tell what it will be from cg stuff. It would have been much nicer to have seen some actual game play.

Every person here forgets one very important fact.
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is a "demo" albeit one Sony asked money for but a demo all the same and a beta one at that.
You may feel you get a lot for your £20 but it's a mere drop at what the final game should and will have.
The "Demo" only contains a handfull of cars, a relaxed mission structure and one new track (the rest are old GT4 tracks)I'm fairly sure though the Japan release features the Nordschleife.
Face facts. GT5 for a console racing game can hold it's head high compared to modern racing sims on the PC. It maynot reach the staggering heights set by iRacing but it's more than a match for the driving models of GTR Evolution and GTR2. I'm not going to include rFactor in that as that "game" is only as good as the mods released for it.

WRC license should be great, but…
Given the current state of WRC, you’d have to hope that they have more than just a Citroen, a Focus and an [abandoned] Subaru to play with.

True, true. And if the performance of the cars is realistically modeled, will we see anyone outside of a Citroen online? Bunch of Loeb wannabes! :)

Jos: looks nice but gran turismo need to improve on certain things.
car sounds: most of em sound like vacuum cleaners, multiplayer: private rooms with chat.more wheel controls: I cant even setup my g25 steering angle. you know how much it sucks to drive the F1 with 900 deg??
more customization, more control options, like PC games!

If you didn't know GT5P is set-up by default for use with 900deg wheels like the G25, DFGT and DFP, with the correct steering angle.

In the tuning options, only available for online play in GT5P, there's also an option to adjust the steering angle to your personal preference.

UncleChuckle:

No fannying about with copy protection that stops you from loading what you’ve paid for, driver issues, crashes etc…

The funny thing is XBox 360 and PS3 are just big DRM (copy protection) systems.

All these corporations like Microsoft, Apple, Sony dreamed for years to create closed platforms such as these consoles, phones, entertainment devices, etc.
Systems where they can profit from each game/app sell, or can stop the competition just by refusing to license their work.
Just look at the situation with the Xbox 360 wheels, or with some apps in Apple's iPhone AppStore.

PC is the only platform (in the IT and entertainment) which is still opened, and it needs all our support to stay that. Without the PC wouldn't be possible nor rFactor, nor NetKar Pro, nor VGP3...

I must admit that my beloved Indy looks great in this video, and the addition of the WRC and NASCAR licenses is HUGE. Forza 3 is definitely on the back foot now.

Howie47: Where the hell did you read that PC gaming is gaining on consoles? That's hogwash. Hell, EA Sports is all but abandoning PC gaming because of low sales and piracy. No Madden last year, rumors that this may be the final Tiger Woods on the PC, etc.

I dropped consoles three years ago and am a devoted PC gamer now. But I know I'm in a vast minority of gamers. I love the realism of PC racing sims, plus all the great free mods and peripherals.

But it's pretty daft to suggest PC gaming is enjoying some sort of resurgence when the hard data proves otherwise.

Sodapop:

Do we have any confirmation that the scenes displaying car damage were not pre rendered? Until there’s actual confirmation from PD, I’m going with the view that a good portion of that trailer was pre rendered. At least the parts displaying car damage…

Well I said that, based on the fact that GT5P's replay (photo) mode looks almost like this trailer. GT5P's game mode is something different and is not that good looking as the replay mode, though.
However, GT5P is just a driving game with realistic physics. It lacks practice mode, qualification, tyre wear (IMO), damage, etc., so cannot be called simulation, IMO.

I hope they will resolve all this problems for the GT5 release.
