Gran Turismo 5 Demo – Celebrity Benchmark Laps

Posted on December 23rd, 2009 in

Almost a week ago, Sony and Nissan released the Gran Turismo 5 GT Academy demo, giving all Playstation 3 owners the chance to compete for a fully-funded real racing season in the FIA GT4 championship.

To give those who plan to enter the time trials an idea what kind of performance is required to run with the big guys and make it into the GT Academy final, you can find two celebrity lap videos below. The first shows GT series creator Kazunori Yamauchi driving the Nissan 370Z road car. Yamauchi is not just an acclaimed game developer but also a quite talented road racer as you can tell from his Nordschleife racing footage.

The second video shows last year’s GT Academy winner Lucas Ordonez driving the tuned version of the 370Z. These two aren’t the only known drivers to be competing in the time trials as six-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb has already been spotted on track as well. Needless to say, the Frenchman and other pro drivers are not eligible to compete for a spot in the GT Academy as only amateur drivers will be making it into the final rounds.

Damn, they’re still 0.8 seconds faster than me: I need to beat them!

The first video looks really nice. The car moves in a realistic way but something just looks odd in parts of the second video like is is sped up or something. I love the way the camera sort of hunts around in GT5. A friend of mine is giving her husband a PS3 for Xmas. I guess I should encourage him to bring it over and connect it to my cockpit and download this demo. :)

Wow.. it looks like this demo isn’t available in the states? So the competition is on a US track but isn’t available in the states. Is Tony George part of the problem?

Never mind, I found it. It is available in the states but if your in the states you win a ticket to the Indy 500 rather then a drive at Silverstone. How lame.
