Future F1 Games - Another Interview
After Codemasters’ CEO Rod Cousens, senior producer Clive Moody also shared some info about Codemasters’ upcoming Formula One games. While primarily talking about Racedriver GRID, Moody shared the following in an interview with Three Speech:
“I do think as well with an F1 game, getting the simulation aspect of it spot on is incredibly important. We have to cater for a possibly even wider audience than we do with a game like Grid – we need that full-on simulation for people who really like to get down to the nuts and bolts, doing all the very fine adjustments on their car. But similarly, to appeal to a wider audience, we need to make it simple and playable enough for those who just want to have some great, fun racing.
There’s a real challenge there to try and satisfy all parties. I’m an F1 fan, I love it, but when it comes to racing games I don’t really want to get down to the fine detail – as a gamer I want to get in an have that experience, to feel like a Lewis Hamilton or a Kimi Räikkönen, a racing hero, that’s the important thing we need to get across.”
The mentioning of “simulation” can be considered to be a positive hint, the approach of making the game easily accessibly sounds quite like the opposite though. With the exception of Simbin, no developer has really succeeded in combining hardcore simulation with arcade fun for casual players yet.
Going down to nuts and bolts sounds good - But considering that GRID offered zero setup possibilities and not even a qualifying mode, I have my doubts if Codemasters can produce anything more than a brushed-up arcade game with a wannabe simulation mode. But I´m open to be positively surprised… :)

CRAPMASTERS sucks

Yeah, the word simulation is tossed around lightly these days. Remember the Le Mans-video for Racedriver:OMG which hailed realism?

Lol at Codemasters making a sim.

I’m an F1 fan, I love it, but when it comes to racing games I “REALLY” want to get down to the fine detail – as a gamer I want to get in an have “that REAL experience”, “There is NO NO NO NEED” to feel like a Lewis Hamilton or a Kimi Räikkönen OR a racing hero, “I WANT TO BE MYSELF” that’s the important thing THEY STILL DONT GET IT.”

Translate him into reality “I want to simulate being an F1 racer and race REALLY REALLY FAST, while putting in the minimum effort to accomplish it.” This seems like the kind of guy that goes to a track day with his traction control on.

Codemasters doesn’t know the meaning of the word simulation. They have proven that over and over again.
…ToCA Race Driver series : The Ultimate Racing Simulator…

If they have any sense they will at least try and have the same difficulty settings and game options that Grand Prix 4 had.
Knowing the codies though, I doubt it.

I think it’s a grave mistake to think Codemasters could not create a sim. I’m quite confident they could create a sim at least on par with current offerings, perhaps even better, depending on much they’d invest in it. The things is, they decide to just not do it.
Codemasters creasting arcade game isn’t an indicator of ability, it’s a consequence of market research.
Don’t blame the companies. Blame the people that buy arcade racing games over racing sims.

Maybe seeing an Audi R10 TDI doing 420 km/h @ LM and braking to 100 instantly can be fun, but those who wanna race proper F1 will go for rFactor / GTR2. Codemasters should watch some actual onboards and hopefully stop using “simulation” word for their games.

I’m sure the game will be very ‘realistic’ by the popular definition.
Realism - To look real.
Unlike the simracers definition:
Realism - To feel real.

sounds rather positive to me..based on my enjoyment of GRID, they easily have a sale from me..

Satorian: Problem isn’t that they make arcade games, it’s that they make arcade games and call them simulators.

Doesn’t this quote from him say it all?
