Forza Motorsport 4 vs. R3E – Suzuka Comparison

The guys over at MotoGamesTV have created a new comparison video, putting Forza Motorsport’s Suzuka side by side with RaceRoom Racing Experience.

Simbin just released their version of the Japanese Formula One venue which has become a popular track in pretty much all big racing titles.

The video shows a lap around the track in both titles in the BMW Z4 GT3.

Well, as far as sound , R3E is more authentic and immersive. FM4 looks better.

I’m generally alarmed (but not surprised) by the amount of people on youtube saying FM4 is better in anyway. Yes, R3E isn’t a graphical wonder and is make by those real time video editing filters. But Forza4 is just full of horrid aliasing, over saturated sky, overblown colours, low resolution textures, blocky shadows, etc.

Or… are those people simply looking at the increased contrast in a tiny youtube video from a distance… watching the road completely white out in the sun… mouth watering over the black rubber stained racing groove and saying “omfg shiny Forza4 graphics are da best, it rocks on my dad’s widescreen TV, no PC beats my xbox and I pwn at blackops2!” – yeah it’s such a cliché but my goodness, I can’t help but think some people actually think like this still… they must do, because it’s the only reasonable explanation that they think Forza4 looks better here.

P.S. Drunk at time of writing.

Race Room Experience sound is so much better. Compare the sound to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q547mgSI_UE most of all listen how similar the down shift are with RRE.

    That’s a bloody good video !

The Camera is really well placed giving a realistic FOV , sense of speed and a clear idea of the real world car movement , fantastic.

I have to say in this car RRE sounds a bit spongy and i think for the video, a bit slow deep revs.

Well for track accuracy, obviously R3E has that although still not better than iracing or GT5, very accurate track for sure. Forza has never been very accurate with real life tracks though, their Road Atlanta is awful, very far off the mark.

Sound, obviously R3E wins even if you don’t care about the more realistic tranny sound (which I don’t)

Graphics, it’s up for debate I think. Sure, forza is more flashy, but it’s also blurry, over-saturated as hell, and the lighting is very unrealistic. R3E may not be a dazzling graphics powerhouse but frankly it doesn’t need to be. Other than GT5 most console games are going more for style and flashiness than they are photorealism. Sometimes style is good, like in a zelda type fantasy game, but anything else I think photorealism is just better, and R3E has much more clarity, the colors are more accurate, there are much less jagged shadows and aliasing, and overall, I actually prefer it. I really don’t like blurry graphics and oversaturated colors and unrealistic color pallette, so I think overall R3E stomps Forza in almost every way and I’m not even a big simbin fan, never have been. They still top Forza easily

Unfortunately, that car is not a Z4 GT3 http://blog.axisofoversteer.com/2008/05/when-is-bmw-audi-and-audi-bmw.html. It’s powered by an Audi V8 engine. But thanks for your comments ;)

I’ve played all the content in the closed beta of R3E and it is very strong in simulation and better than FM4 (sim fun to me comes from coherence in the whole package – incoherence great example is Codemaster’s F1 2013).
But visually is worse than FM4.
FM4 is technically inferior (because the hardware is fixed) but artistically is superior: the reflections, lighting, sun, trees shadows, saturation, little details. Its art makes it great.
R3E is all mud in that sense.

There’s a space in my shelf for both of these, well technically not R3E but I’m sure you know what I mean. Could FM4 be better? Sure, but so could R3E. You do what you can with the resources you have to work with.

I think a more fun comparison would be between these games and GTR2 (2006) and Forza 1 (2005). We’ve made decent progress in 7-8 years, looking forward to the next 7-8.
