Fanatec Porsche 911 Turbo S – GTForums Hands-On

The guys over at GTForums.co.uk have gotten their hands on an early example of Fanatec’s sought-after Porsche 911 Turbo S wheel, the first Fanatec wheel to be compatible to all gaming consoles including Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Furthermore, the 911 Turbo S is the Turn 10 Studios approved wheel to use with their upcoming Forza Motorsport 3 title. Check out the first shots of the wheel below and visit this link for the full story in the GTForums. The Fanatec Porsche 911 Turbo S wheel sells for 229€, the high demand on this fine piece of engineering has caused quite a waiting time for interested customers though.

Check out that Turbo S video on the GTForums page – there is a horrible lag between the time the Fanatec wheel turns and the corresponding movement of the in-game cockpit wheel. The big question: is that lag due to the Fanatec software, a slow computer, or a crappy monitor? You’d think they would do their best to showcase the wheel’s best performance, meaning the other hardware would be high-end, but then they used a tiny monitor for the video so who knows….not encouraging, I have no lag with the G25.

And despite that premium mounting system he’s using the shifter unit wobbled much more in use than my G25 one does – and I am not sure I could stand that loud clicking noise with every gear change. Does anyone know if the loud clicking is also found with the sequential shifter?

Anyone knows if the wheel fits to the Playseat?

I think as long as the Fanatec Wheels are overpriced (different regions different prices) and distributed to few worldwide countries its a NO match for Logitech. Give standardized world price (eg. 300 U$ dollars = 204 euros = 188 pounds) like Logitech does, make the wheels available for worldwide orders and then they got a change. I’m about to retire my DFGT and due to these reason I might get the G27!

BTW when it comes to sim racing PC is first and the PS3 the second option if SMS gave us an arcade Shift imagine how Forza 3 will play (see videos if you doubt) so it means n o t h i n g 360 support!

@DevonK the clicking sound isnt as bad as it sound. And yes the sequential shifter makes the same sound. But your G25 makes more sound when turning then the shifter from the fanatec wheel.

I have 2 wheels from fanatec and both work great. Sure the price aint cheap but you get a wheel with belt drive which isnt be found on any logitech wheel. The belt and elctronics are more expensive then a motorised wheel. And due to the belt drive the wheel is compared to any other wheel rather quite. Not defending the price Fanatec made but something to keep in mind. I would buy another Fanatec wheel if they break in a instant.

Cueball, thanks for describing your experience – good to know. Any comments on the lag you see in that video? Do you get the same thing? Wheel noise is only a minor issue for me as I use headphones so I don’t hear the G25 – anyway my new rig will have 2 5850s or 5870s to drive my 30″ monitor so the noise of those babies alone will force the use of headphones!

The lag isnt lag as I see it. I think thomas has set the wheel up on 900 degree. But to answer your Q i didnt have any lag what so ever.

@Fanatec thank you for you time to answer my query but mind you the G27 isn’t in stock in most places yet and I can find links on ebay or web stores that are selling the the G27 for worldwide shipping right now for less then $U350.

In another note maybe part of my frustration is the fact I’m in China right now and I have no option to order Fanatec’s products. Maybe you guys could have and option to worldwide shipping to Asia, South America countries outside the EU, SA NZ Australia etc with an standard rate as these regions. If any local tax would apply that would be the buyer’s own issue!

We are actually expanding our distribution and add new countries like Japan and Australia very soon but the problem with shipping to “exotic” countries is the after sales service as it would cost a fortune to repair or exchange something.

@DevonK So you already use a headset why in earth you would hear the clicking of the shifter ??. Not very really realistic comment then.

2x 5870 thats wicked. It looks like a bit overkill to me but who cares as long as your happy. :D
