F1 2012 – SRT First Look & Interview

The guys over at InsideSimRacing.tv have released a special video report on F1 2012.

Darin & Shaun recently had the chance to welcome lead designers Paul Jeal & Stephen Hood in their studio, the 30 minute video below brings us an extensive interview with the two as well as plenty of gameplay footage.

F1 2012 will bring all cars and drivers of the current Formula One World Championship season to the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The title is due to be released in September.

I’d love to be proven wrong, but I get a strong feeling it’s the same old hype all over again.  $60 that looks like it will be taking up permanent residency in my wallet.

While ever they have to release a new version each year I don’t think we will ever see major changes or improvements. A full version would be good every second year with an update DLC in between for changes. Obviously the cost to have the licence dictates they need to sell full versions each year to make it profitable.

Might wait until the end of the season to buy it for $20 through steam.  Should still be a fun game anyway… providing no major bugs :)

How come no one is asking them if they plan to introduce GP2 (and maybe F3 as well) so that drivers can really mimic an F1 career?

This time I am certainly going to wait before purchasing. Also, I may very well buy the CD instead of the download (if available) so I can at least sell it if it turns out to be buggy like its predecessors.

This “Hype” seems to only exist in this sim community. For example, in this interview he said clearly it isn’t a full sim, I wonder if anyone will notice. lol They said the same thing last year and many seemed not to notice then either.

They were asked about GP2 before, the answer was FOM don’t (or won’t) allow it. Seems stupid not to have it though.

What’s strange is its not arcade aether its simply bad to drive I don’t understand the point in playing it as a game , I will happily play split second , wipe out , Mario cart , burnout , PGR as they are good “games”

Its strange in the same way that you get people buying 3 screens and 3 xboxes and then using a fanitec elite wheel with forza its like they are really into driving and simulation but don’t realise that ,  NKP, i racing , RF2 offer far more realistic and consistent driving mechanics and better on-line racing with real people not AI.

Also for the same cost they could have a decent gaming pc that not only does better driving simulation but can play all the FPS games on it which are again often far better than console FPS games.Though I understand  as super casual person that likes to watch F1 on tv you might shove F1 2011 in your x box and do a 5 lap race with assists on using a 360 pad , still its very boring compared to a proper simulator or a proper arcade game.

well this f1 title definitely isnt full sim. but it still does mimic the handling quite well imo. gets me serious at races especially with the rubberband AI which some are impossible to overtake once they are infront (which is pretty like in real life). its like grid…but harder. all is imo though..

Really can’t agree with you. Take another listen to that interview and you’ll see there’s plenty of optimism about upping the realism/driving model etc.

The truth is that it’s the wrong developer with the right franchise. If only ISI could afford the licensing then they’d blitz CM’s efforts in a heartbeat.

Have you tried playing PGR with a wheel? Unplayable, with a Pad it’s great fun.

Wait, you can’t race Forza online with real people? It’s easier to find a race there than it is on NKP, probably due to the fact the networking was so crap for so long. Forza does have consistent physics, my complaint is that it’s too consistent (which is probably the same complaint as a lot of sim guys have aka it’s too easy/arcade). Sure triple screen on that game or GT5 might not be the “Sim” experience that “You’re” looking for, but it works for the people that are investing it, most of which have PC Sims too. What matters is they are enjoying what they are doing.

“still its very boring compared to a proper simulator or a proper arcade game.” In your opinion. Maybe not to the 13-18 year olds what want to mimic what they see at the weekend.

“Realistic” doesn’t mean rFactor or NKP. “Improvement” doesn’t mean iRacing. This is what I mean, people hear what they want to hear, then rage when they don’t get what they were expecting.

I doubt ISI would ever take on the F1 license, they know they would either have to develop the game in a similar style to Codemasters, or do it their own way and go broke trying.
