F1 2012 – Spa On Board Lap Video

Codemasters have released a new preview video of their F1 2012 title, showing us a lap around Spa Francorchamps ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

The video is narrated by former Formula One driver and Toyota sports car ace Anthony Davidson who takes us for the lap around the Belgian rollercoaster.

F1 2012 will bring all cars and drivers of the current Formula One World Championship season to the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The title is due to be released on September 21, a demo version will be available around September 14.

This is a small complaint, but the kerb textures don’t make any sense at all. There have been UBS-sponsored kerbs all over the track since last year, but I can only see 3 in this video. And they’re in places where there aren’t actually any of them in real life (Rivage, Pouhon and T14).

Apart from that the physics and sound seem to be greatly improved from last year.

If this was a full blown sim, I`d say you may have a valid complaint. But for what this is, its good enough the vast majority of those who will be playing it.

  • David Wright

Don’t worry – even in a “full blown” sim such as iRacing the kerb textures do not reflect today’s track.

I think that attitude is fine in regards to factors like bodywork upgrades and special helmets, but putting those kerbs in the right places is such an trivial task that I’m dumbfounded by how much they got it wrong. The conversation must have been:
    “Bob, update the Spa kerbs.”
“okay, I’ll just make up something in thirty seconds since nobody here will check it against a two-minute YouTube video.”

The sort of thing that modders would put right in a heartbeat if they were able to.

Well I doubt it will affect your driving. You’re not going to get 100% accuracy so there has to come a point where you let some stuff slide. Especially if its coming out of Codemasters.

Well, it did look good actually. The steering movements and such are very much like you see on TV, and it sounds ok too. So I guess its all down to how it feels and behaves. 14 days to find that out.

Textures are the least of their worries, that track model in places was horrible. Am loving the fantasy bumps too.

There’s an old saying in Tennessee, I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says: Fool me once, shame on.. shame on you. You fool me you can’t get fooled again.

One comment i have to add. Today, Button opened DRS trough Blanchimont corner! I wonder if you can do it in the game too!

  • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

You can. Making it through would be a different matter :)

    “Is our children learning ?”

CM providing a demo will help a lot of people decide if they want it or not.

In iRacing they reflect accurately at the moment the track was laser scanned. Driving at this track in Codemasters F1 feels like driving in a fantasy track.

Great enthusiasm Anthony Davidson has exhibited in this Hot Lap… Really Great Stuff Ant!

The biggest problem I have had with F1 2011 and 2010 has been that somehow the game pauses on my during SP racing and occasionally even during Multiplayer. It’s like my G25 is triggering the pause button or trying to Alt-tab out of the game. I can even see moments when it’s just about to “switch” and the menu displays for a fraction of a second. Needless to say, it’s impossible to race like that. Both games did it and no other game I own does it. Clearly a problem with the game, albeit not very diffused (a few other guys have the same thing happen to them) But if 2012 does the same thing, I cannot in good conscience buy it.

Why can’t they? There have been mods for F1 2010 and 2011.

The fact that they’re releasing a demo suggests to me that they are confident in the improvements they’ve made to the physics and feel. That’s the only reason I would buy it. I bought both the previous games, and had some fun with them for what they were, but there would need to be a pretty big step up in the handling for me to buy another one. Basically, the only way I could know if it was worth it to me was to actually drive it. I hope this was their train of thought in deciding to release a demo.

Yep, completely agree. And here’s hoping that the demo is because they are confident this time around.
