F1RacerI’m not sure what they mean about the play getting to race full distances or work on setup themselves. Does that mean you get to play engineer to an AI or that you can’t race less than full race distances ? Strange.

"They" don't mean anything, it's just badly worded by the site author.

What he tried to say was there are different options for setups and race length.

So players can do either full distance races or short races, and they can do the setup themselves or they can have an engineer provide one.

@F1Racer, -eRNIe-: +2

I agree, most of the commentary seems so negative about any mainstream titles. Okay, I love rFactor but I also want a true single player career experience at times. Hopefully this will bridge the gap. I can live with our mech. failures if it's FUN, the physics are decent, and the graphics and sounds are top notch.

Face it- hard core sim racers (of which I consider myself a part of) are a small group, not destined to make a developer with a big budget go after them at the expense of alienating the more casual driving game enthusiast who otherwise plays Forza III, NFS Shift, Grid or Dirt in droves... Hopefully there will be enough realism and challenge with all aids off to make it the best we can hope for while still being a commercial success.

-eRNIe-: @F1Racer:+1Most comparisons of upcoming games (sims?) are full of prejudicies depending on the developers and their history.
Many simracers have applied a double standard to every small detail on some screenshots of an unfinished product.
F1 2010-Screenshot: Ugly here, ugly there, to much bloom, etc. = crappy arcade
NFS Shift-Screenshot: Ugly here, ugly there, to much bloom, etc. = crappy arcade
WRC-Screenshot (by Milestone): unrealistic wheels here, photoshopped there = not a sim
rFactor2-Screenshot (tiny and with lack of details): brilliant, fantastic, awesome = great sim
Some racers of our little sim-community will never be satisfied.

phil23:
Although part of me is worried that us Sim racers will end up not getting the Sim we want

Well this is the crux of it really. Sim racers will not get the sim they want for a number of reasons.
One is that they don't really know what they want. Nothing is ever enough for them. The other is that they are never ever satisfied no matter what.
Also they slag off every tiny detail and dismiss new things out of hand and generally have a pessimistic point of view.
If its free and high quality and they havent had to lift a finger, then, maybe they`ll be happy. But its quite rare.

This title has, in some peoples minds, been written off already which shows the attitude people are having towards sim racing. It's not as if they have loads to choose from.
First they cry when no big companies make sims for us so we rely on modding, which is fine cos there's great talent out there.
But then when a company does come along they get slagged and dissed for anything (blur and steering wheels for example) even at this early stage. To top that they imply we dont need these big companies cos we have the modders. The very groups that are the victims of all the abuse and slagging for their hard work if god help they don't get it perfect.

Also all sim racers don't want the same things. Some are happy with compromise, like F1-2010 looks to have. Others rage if there are any.
A brilliant prosperous and bright community of which I am proud to belong

I think some people need to remember that though coddies have made many racing games, this is their first attempt at F1.

Although part of me is worried that us Sim racers will end up not getting the Sim we want I still want to keep an open mind and give them the benefit of the doubt.

There is a lot for them to do and they can't be expected to have every possible feature in their first release. Even EA Sports needed a few attempts b4 their final success with F1 Challenge 99-02.

It looks nice and they're clearly putting a lot of effort in the tracks and cars.

Montoya: What’s strange about being able to do shorter races? Pretty much every sim I can think of offers that option.

Did you misread what I wrote ? I never said doing shorter races was strange. It's my preferred option.
I didnt understand the bit about 'Players will be having the choice to complete full-distance races or work on the car’s setup themselves.'

It kinda implies that you can either do a full distance race OR work on setup. I don't understand those 2 choices against each other. Its like a driver saying to his engineer, "I wont compete in the race today, I`ll work on setup instead."

Maybe Im reading it wrong. There are no mention of shorter distances there, thats all, unless of course it's assumed.

How is rewind a negative ? Surely you don't have to use it. Rewind doesn't change the game or its driving experience.
One feature that you don't agree with doesn't mean the game is ruined.

No mechanical failures is quite an omission from something that might wanna call itself an F1 sim. But then, apart from overheating an engine, when was the last time a mech failure stopped you in rFactor. Most 'sims' today dont have that. GP4 was the last decent implementation of that.

So no punctures, electrical issues, hydraulic failure ? I guess that was another aspect to the coding that they didn't want the headache of having to implement.

I'm not sure what they mean about the play getting to race full distances or work on setup themselves. Does that mean you get to play engineer to an AI or that you can't race less than full race distances ? Strange.

Unique physics is always good so that a plus, but DIRT2 has that.

Mid-season development.. Sounds good but I wonder if that's all pre-determined every time you race a season, or the rate of development is different say for Ferrari/McLaren than for Force India or a lower team...

Screenshots are nice anyway, especially the 3rd one in Melbourne. The environment looks amazing.

I just hope they make the amount of blur controllable from 0-100%.

Cockpit view reminds me of GRID, there's just something about the arms and display.

Oh yeah, and rewind? This game could have been awesome.

But how will seven seasons work if there will only be the 2010/2009 cars? If there are the 2003-2010 seasons I'll buy it anyway.
