Raptor13270: How would you compare DiRT 2 with Richard Burn’s Rally? Do the cars in DiRT 2 turn as if its revolving around an imaginary center point – like the previous McRae titles, or is it more like RBR?

Codies dropped pivot point physics some time ago. The first DiRT uses a full four-point physics model (in fact each wheel is calculated as a contact patch of multiple points that can change shape depending on tyre deformation and camber).

I consider games with cars that behave similar to its real life counterpart a sim. For example, an F1 car cannot decelerate in just a second in the gravel by doing a 90 degree turn (video is in another article). It just defies the laws of physics. I also would like to control the car by myself (no turning assist, no throttle/brake assit, turn on limiter at any time, etc.), instead of being held in the hand by some lines of code.

How would you compare DiRT 2 with Richard Burn's Rally? Do the cars in DiRT 2 turn as if its revolving around an imaginary center point - like the previous McRae titles, or is it more like RBR?

creatorex: I think Dirt2 is quite a simulation and FFB is very very good. So it depends on what you consider as a sim. For example Grid cars behavior is not believable, Dirt2 cars behavior yes. Shift is over exaggerated in bumps and so on (so pc users mod it). Some rfactor mods in F1 car can spin a lot and car give a lot of 360º spins when in the real a f1 can slide and spin but rarely 360º a lot of times. So if Codemasters take dirt2 physics and improve/adapt to F1 concept them will be great. Anthony Davidson is supporting them :). Even as you can se in the videos using an arcade mode car spins (not 360º) and control is lost. And Dirt2 graphics and effects are of the best.
So will it be good; of course yes. We are in a good moment for videogames and driving games too.Cheers!B.

Why is there a limit of 13 cars? As Madcat states, shooters are not bound by this. It cant be graphics as I presume a full grid is possible in single player? This is just a killer blow for me, even if the game is good. In league racing 13 cars is considered low attendance, heck the last one I drove had 30 cars.

Hi F1Racer,

Yes - see where you are coming from. Apparantly there was an issue with "ploughing into the mechanics at 200mph" rather than "knocking one over" .... I'm not sure I buy the explanation either but apparantly it's true ........

I think it's a "make your own mind up" one!

I didn't get to see the braking / knocking pit man over unfortunately so can't comment on how good the effects are.

Paul,

In reference to the bit stops...
Although this bit is disappointing and the excuse for it is quite lame as it's easy to program the car cos it can't overrun the pit marks like in GP4.

"*You cannot steer the car in the pit lane (due to FOM regulations about running over pit crews apparently!) but it is up to you to hit the rev limiter and to brake into the box.

* If you overshoot the box you will knock down the jack man. If you stop too short the pit crew have to re-adjust their positioning (all motion captured) and it will cost you time. "

Aren't these two statements contradicting each other ?

The other weird thing was the talk about multiplayer. That it only features 13 cars but yet they claim to better cater for racing leagues.
I think leagues prefer to run full grids.

"* There is no pre-season testing. It was felt development time better spent elsewhere. "

So no solo practice then ? Pfff What development time ? Same a standard Practice session only allowing a single car if required. No excuse for that one and did they spend that development time coding the press conferences ?

"* You cannot save game during a race, but it is possible to “flashback” to a previous stage. If playing in sim-mode flashbacks are disabled. "

There go full race distances for me. I dont have time to do these all in one go. A phone call can destroy a race too.
I cannot concieve why Geoff Crammond was the last person to realise this was needed (well apart from GTR2).

Looks great but also looks very arcady. Even if there is another mode that's apparently more realistic I doubt it will be - if there was that mode why showcase the crap one?

DiRT2 was great fun - that sort of game works as arcade but I cant see the point in an arcade F1 game, it just doesn't seem right.

Hi Guys,

I took the videos - happy to answer any questions you may have. I put a pretty extensive write up about the game on my site at : - http://www.simracingworld.com/content/398-f1-2010-f1-2010-preview-and-qa-about-features/

Hopefully this will answer some of the questions and points. It is worth remembering the game in the demos was arcade mode. Some of the videos I saw (which we are not allowed to show) were impressive. I am fairly convinced having spoke with a developer at length that there will be lots to keep sim fans happy.

I've got a few more vids to sort out on Youtube this evening so will get them posted for you shortly.

You too. Thanks for your interfering

Heh, that's just going off the comments I've seen here.

If I really wanted to interfere, I'd look back at previous NFS:shift articles, and look into weather what the two gentlemen said, was infact, true.

Based on your actions in this thread up until now, I'm inclined to believe them

thegamer23: i wanted a video with the simulation mode , not the arcade shit

Funny because you forgot to see the description that makes a big deal to note that the game was set in arcade mode with very arcady settings, in order to please all those journalists who couldn't even make it out of the pit without crashing given realistic settings were put on...
True, we still have to see how realistic the sim settings are.. but, it was obvious on the launch date of the game they weren't going to configure it with sim settings. Why? well simple fact, the people who attend those events are journalists, reporters, photographers, and press representatives, not simracers. If you were ever hoping the first look you get at a new game that contains both arcade and sim components, you don't live in the real world. Besides, who the frak cares, it looks damn awesome.
