F1 2010 – London Event Wrap-Up

Posted on March 19th, 2010 in

The buzz from yesterday’s Codemasters Formula One 2010 event in London is slowly starting to fade, time to wrap up the last pieces of information.

Three days ago, I´ve asked all of you to submit your questions to Paul Tomlinson who was in attendance of the event. Paul has tried hard to get answers for all of us and written up an extensive article with lots of info on the upcoming game.

Furthermore, Paul has uploaded some interesting videos you can check out below, including a first look at rain racing and more.

Following their maiden Formula One title that was released only for the Playstation Portable and the Nintendo Wii, Codemasters will be bringing the 2010 Formula One season to the PC, the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. F1 2010 has been confirmed to be released in September 2010.

“Throughout the event I constantly heard references to “F1CE” – that is “Formula One Championship Edition” the last F1 game on the PC from EA Sports, it seems that this has been used as some sort of internal benchmark to beat in every aspect. They claimed to me when I probed them about features “it’s better than in F1CE” etc. This is a good sign!”

Codemasters takes as a benchmark to improve a game with 10-year-old, that goal were extremly difficult!!!!!… :sd:

F1CE actually refers to the 2006 game developed by Sony Liverpool Studio for the PS3.

And that was actually pretty decent…if Codemasters manages to put out something better it will be good for sure.

Graphics looks great… Especially the rain/wet track. I still fear though on the physics. Codemasters has a hard time making realistic tarmac physics. You can see on the videos a number of times where going off track had almost no effect and even crashing into another car didn’t seem to phase it. Also looks like as with grid the cars just float and don’t really move.

I know its still a little early to draw much judgment from a couple videos/screens. Lets just hope they do this right. Regardless i’ll still try it out when released.

If you read the article at simracingworld- for the London event, only arcade physics was made available. Still, speaking from my own experience with CM past games, I know what you mean.

Yeah just read the article. Good info there. Guess we’ll just wait and see!

The wet weather effects looks great, they have done a good job there. But i fear it won`t be enjoyable as the physics looks way to arcadeish. Seems there is no weight transfer and seems its pivot point handling again.

Everyone here who is bashing Codemasters, have you tried Dirt 2? I’ve hated Codemasters games with a passion (Dirt 1 and Grid being undrivable even for arcade games), but Dirt 2 surprised me and is a huge improvement over previous games. Force Feedback is excellent and the physics (not being purist sim-physics of course) are reasonably believable and much more real-like than any other Codemasters game I’ve played before. Only real complaint I have about Dirt 2 is that it doesn’t have enough rally stages.

Anyway, this is why I’m optimistic that this game might be a lot of fun and I’m not writing it off until I have tried it.

While it’s clear we have to wait and see the final product, I wonder why we “have to see” so many videos of people driving like idiots hardly being able to properly drive in a straight line. Regardless of what kind of physics there is already implemented, CM should provide some “more serious promotion” that don’t make the game look like crappy arcade.

I enjoy the looks of it, apart from those “sticky” raindrops, maybe they will improve on that..

The tarmac parts in Dirt 2 were not too bad I hope Anthony Davidson will tell them how it should be.

This looks good so far now on my radar for this year.

Mr. A: Everyone here who is bashing Codemasters, have you tried Dirt 2?

    Yeah, it’s rubbish.

I got the game free with a HD5850 and I still feel robbed.

It’s not just the game, it’s the fact they can’t even get simple things right.

The game doesn’t recognise my wheel, despite being the best selling wheel they didn’t deeem it worthy of including.

Ok, so you edit one of the existing xml files and think nothing more? No, because when you start the game with your wheel plugged in you can’t even enter your name into the game.

So, you unplug the wheel, start the game, enter your name…

The next time you use the game with the wheel, all the settings have gone…and you can’t reconfigure the wheel for the menus and navigation. Like most people I suspect, I have a wheel in front of me when playing a racing game, not a keyboard…so the fact I either have to use the keyboard to navigate (and one thing about Dirt 2, it’s more about navigating menus than racing – something that this nonsense about “talking to the press” sounds like they are going to do to F1 2010 too. How is talking to the press going to require skill? Eh?)

Or I have to play the entire game as “player one” (and hope that I never inadvertently start the game without a wheel plugged in – otherwise I have to start again from scratch just to allow me to press a button on the wheel to navigate through the game)

Ok, so the game is already completely annoying and not something I’m likely to sit and play for hours..but it was free and, hey, what’s the game like?

Well, I put all the settings on hardest and got first place in the first few races. That’s how much skill it required. None. Now, of course, not all games have to require lots of skill, but the annoying things about this game, and the general short races and lack of driving mean it isn’t particularly fun either.

So, suffice to say I’ve not played it since, because the annoyance factor outweighs the fun factor and there’s no real challenge either.

As I said above, when I read that one of their top priorities that they got from listening to their users was not focussing on the driving, I expect this will be worse than Dirt 2. I don’t expect a great deal of fun playing the game.

But, it’s already a given that they aren’t going to create a game that challenges the player either. No fun, no challenge, and possibly still the potential to be annoying to use because they can’t even get something like wheel configuration and a good interface right. No thanks.

I’m not really that impressed that their sole creativity and ideas for the game have come from buying a pretty unimpressive and largely ignored PS3 launch title and finding some trivial things to “beat” it at.

“A game better than a console launch title! But wait, there’s more, an F1 drivers Dad liked it!” Whoo. I’m going to have to lie down. :sd:

I don’t know what the best selling wheel is, but my G25 works perfectly with both the PC and PS3 versions of Dirt 2.

What wheel? I have no issues with my Fanatec in Dirt2 (other than dialing in the FFB advanced wheel settings, which I’m still experimenting with…) I hear lots of people are using G25/G27 very will w/ this title as well. So what wheel isn’t recognized?

It’s clear to me that michael lives in an alternate universe, where Dirt 2 does not work with wheels and the highest difficulty setting is so easy it’s boring.

There are no paragraphs in this alternate universe either I guess…
