F1 2010 – Four Gamescom Videos

The Gamescom at Cologne is still in full swing and more interesting video material on Codemasters’ F1 2010 has emerged.

Below are four particular interesting videos, showing various aspects of the game. The first video shows a press conference with gaming footage in the background, including a closer look at the title’s paddock-themed menu system.

The second video shows a race at Barcelona, including some wing damage and a spin caused by oversteering. The video also shows the following repair pit stop in full length. And finally, the last two videos show races at Barcelona and Monaco, the driver is using a wheel and has disabled the driving assists.

Following their maiden Formula One title that was released only for the Playstation Portable and the Nintendo Wii, Codemasters will be bringing the 2010 Formula One season to the PC, the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. F1 2010 has been confirmed to be released September 24.

So sick of seeing T-cam videos…

  • jpmjpm

Yeah, me too. a simulation can’t be driven properly in T-cam view.

This whole game is for arcade guys with gamepads. Not a real simulation. In GP4 we had the opportunity to drive a simulation or play arcade. In this SW we only have the option for arcade.

Shame, because the graphics and the effort put in the game are great. But the main point of the simulation, the physics seems not too realistic.

In the previous videos I saw the montreal track. It was way too wide compared to the real track. Therefore the corners are not that sharp, meaning that realism suffers a blow.

Too bad, because it really looks great and the weather sim is also promising.

  • Jack

the last two videos look promising! more informative then Sutil’s two videos…
seems like there is no dead zone for the steering wheel and the FFB seems like giving a lot of information to the driver when all asists are off

the physics may not be better then GTR2 but i think it shouldn’t be that bad.

i think Sutil played the game with lots of assistent so that it won’t make him look bad….

  • Marcel Penzkofer

Montreal is much too tight in rFactor, compared to real life. It’s wider than you think. Look at phots instead of other Sims or TV-Coverage (F1-Onboard-cams are not showing true dimensions as they have a different angle than the human eye or a refl.camera

For example… Turn 2 in rFactor is just wide enough for two/three cars… in real life you could park up to 7 side by side there.

  • kevmscotland

Is it just me or are all the engine sounds identical.

I appreciate they are all F1 cars, but anyone who watches the coverage or has been to a race will tell you each engine manufactures have different outputs.

Wether it be a variable in engine size, RPM, etc, they dont all sound identical.

Hoping its just a early build and something that wont be in the final.

Also the radio guy still sounds like Big Brother!!!

Rest of the game looks amazing tho!!

  • Carbonfibre

I’m much more impressed with the sounds now, the steering wheel not being connected to the front-end is also fixed and looks as responsive as it should be. I have no more nitpicks now, only physics and FFB that could never be shown in the videos. The radio can probably be disabled too. Shame about being no demo.

  • Raymon

The more I see videos of f1 2010, the less I want it , another F1 (Codemasters) game that nobody’s going to remember after a while.

  • Dave

The sound guy made an intresting comment in relation to the sounds on codies forums,Previously when he worked on a pc game.

“Our biggest issue with the consoles, is memory. When we did F1 2003 at EA, on the PC, the engine sounds alone took up nearly 17 meg of memory. For 2010, we have a console budget of 1.2 meg, so you can imagine how hard we are squeezing things in.”

Im not sure if all sounds are the same or not .

  • F1Racer

I`ll bet F1-2010 simulates the physics of an F1 car better then GTR2 does :)      Not quite sure why you are comparing the two really.  We all know this isn’t pure sim.

  • F1Racer

    Yawn! =-O

  • F1Racer

Character animations are great.  Monaco looked superb especially up the hill after turn 1.
I think one of the things that will irritate quickly is once you’re done with setup (waiting to go to race), this anim or the engine starting up and the car turning out of the pits before the screen fades.
Anyway it`ll give chance to get ready I guess.

    Roll on Sept 24th.

  • kevmscotland

Hmm, thats a interesting piece of info, but kind of annoying at the same time.
If (and thats if) they have all the sounds available to them, surely they can expand that out abit with alittle bit of work to the PC version. There would need to be some work done anyway with regards to audio hardware etc.

  • Raymon

This was exactly my reaction seeing these videos

    BIG Yawn!

  • Jason

four years later and i don’t see a huge difference from this game,oh and the sky is as it should be,

    Blue

  • Rooster

Do we NEED these shitty menus? Can’t believe Codies make the menus look like a complete joke. :-E

  • Philip Oakley

This is exactly what I wanted in Grand Prix 5. Good, immersive gameplay with the option to play sim or arcade. Don’t know how (jpmjpm) came to the conclusion this all arcade, because it clearly isn’t, the last two videos show that.

It’s GP5 without Geoff Crammond. Yes, it isn’t pure sim. But it looks fun, and that’s what matters to me. Plus, it’s F1 :D

  • Philip Oakley

How can you compare the two? You’ve only seen videos of F1 2010, so for all you know it could be completely different.

    Don’t judge a book by it’s cover!

  • Kapten_zoom

Honestly i think these are the best menus i’ve seen! No doubt about that!

  • youyou

inside the cockpit looks empty(no legs) remember the first videos they used to be legs and the fingers moves when shifing that’s missing too

  • F1Racer

Then why even post ?  Why even come in this thread and post.  What a waste of time.  As if anyone cares or is affected by you hating it.   Spend time with the stuff you do like.

  • Kirby

They can’t do that. The game has to be the same on the PC as on Xbox 360 and PS3. Otherwise people will only buy the PC version cause it’s better which is not good for sales on the Xbox and PS3. SO that’s why the game has to be the same.

  • Simosimosimo

Nobody mention it, but will the game include trophy celebrations?

  • Sensekhmet

Ahhhh, the last two videos seem to be pretty similar to my simracing skills… either 1 spin per lap or being lappen once by the entire field in 10 laps… and then a spin from being startled by them blowing by.

  • youyou

no over steer when he accelirate not even little correction and where ? in monaco…… arcadiiiiish

  • youyou

no oversteer when he accelirate not even little correction and where ? in monaco…… arcadiiiiish
he did turn the traction control off

  • jpmjpm

Wider than I think? I don’t think it, I see it on onboard videos from montreal. The reference point can be the suspension of the car, so you can compare how wide things are, no matter how different the angles of the cameras.

And also, maybe the ISI montreal track is narrower than the real, but I use the GP4 version of that track, which is made by GPS coordinates, so it is accurate. There was no word about how CM models tracks. As all important details are hidden about the game. We can hear nice things about the game, how state of the art it is, and blah blah blah…

“… in real life you could park up to 7 side by side there.”

I don’t know what to think about this. Maybe in Silverstone or Sepang you can park 7 cars side by side, but not in Montreal.

  • Wesley

indeed, maybe it is because he didnt limit it?  *DONT_KNOW*

  • Wesley

Wow seriously, what an arcade game, there is no realism at all in this game, look at the fake damage and fake pit stops for example! /sarcasm

  • Kirby

Those white littel arrows you seen popping up on the screen when another car is close behind you looks very annoying. Hope you can turn that off somewhere

  • Mike Chaney

I want to know if you can change the car setup in MP. Anybody know?

  • Gpfan

GTR2 physics sucks!!! By what i´ve seen in those videos apart of FFB i´m very positive, with all aids off, you going to have a lot off fun driving those cars!!!!!

  • moschum

    epic fail.
the cars dont seem to react to any kerbs or bumps or cambers.
there doesnt seem to be any requirement for any throttle control either.
the car itself in terms of movements seem slow, deliberate, and sluggish.

really nice sounds, graphics, and polish, all thats required to keep the average gamer happy. but not the simracer. hopefully the multiplayer might save it…..even if its limited to 12.

  • Rich1701

Nah the days when console games were tailored for the PC are long gone. These days it is easier and cheaper just to do a port. PC gaming isn’t even an afterthought anymore.

  • Rich1701

It looks okay… I like the menu system. Sounds are not too bad, gameplay looks fun. The track surface is not bumpy, the car does not bounce or react to bumps in the track surface which appears to be universally flat. This is a significant disappointment. Obviously this is a critical area a real driver must set up his car around and there does not appear to be that challenge here. Perhaps this is something CM should look into for F1 2011, they have done a lot with track dynamics so I can forgive them this year anyway.

  • ErazerSwe

Wow all these negative posts…Well i for one have preordered the game and im not gonna judge it from watching videos, id like to play it myself. I know this isnt gonna be a simracer but i still think it can be loads of fun and for me the funfactor comes first. Just my 2 cents on this.

  • Jayblue

I actually thought it looked slightly more promising in these videos compared to others i have seen. For sure its not going to be full on sim (we all knew that anyway) but if it manages to strike a good balance between sim and fun on the hardest level it will still be a good game. Other aspects look well developed such as the AI, who at least manage to overtake, defend position and also look able to have a decent pace from some of these videos. The sense of atmosphere looks great IMO, with the grandstands filling up as race day approaches, spray from other cars in wet races and such like. I think i’m right in saying we haven’t seen a video from the PC game yet so the already fantastic look graphics will look sharper for us.

The tyre limits over the weekend just like in real life are clearly implemented and the detail on the pitcrew is looking pretty awesome to me. I am interested to see how the engine and tyre temps work, i noticed the car diagram keeps appearing in the right hand corner of the screen, i wonder if the engine overheats following other cars too closely for too long.

I am still hoping there is some way PC modders can “unlock” some aspects of the game and make it more realistic in terms of the physics. After all the game itself has some more advanced features than anything else we have such as flat spotting tyres, marbles off line, drying wet track and puddles, rivers etc in wet races. We can’t expect Codemasters to build in every feature this time as it leaves them with nothing to improve on or develop for the game next year.

  • Nicholas

    no podium

  • Wesley

i dont see the TV cam(wich is used here) shaking all over the place when driving over bumps irl either, so it is an bad argument.

  • Dave

I think he may be referring to the suspension movement or lack of it at the front wheels,If you look at all the vids the front wheel rarely move up and down while the car is on the track surface and its very gentle even on the kerbs. What ever chance that a normal circuit may be reasonably smooth a street circuit should show up a lot of this movement.
None of the camera views have any kind of shake built into them to reflect the way the drivers head would move.

  • F1Racer

All that said, mine is now on pre-order.  I dunno what took me so long really :)    I couldn’t be without this in my collection regardless of any pure sim shortcomings.

  • RKip

    Ditto !

  • RKip

iRacing considered King of Sim Games— No movement in car by animated driver as there is no animated driver.  Also in replay in iRacing the animated driver is a completely stiff object.

  • RKip

iRacing considered King of Sim Games— worst damage model in all Sim games IMHO and yes, I own it.  The last build they improved somewhat, but still a real poor model, yet everyone gives iRacing a free pass on this issue.

  • Jason

a friend of mine went to GC and told me that both in handling and gfx these two are very close, with the f1 2010 being a bit better in the gfx department but luck in the sense of speed where f1 ch is better

talking about books, i’have read the specific book many times now (grid, dirt) and let me tell you the only thing that change is it’s cover,in other words..

    Same sh*t different cover

  • F1Racer

I wouldn’t call that ‘epic’.  But at least you got the chance to use that silly phrase again.

  • rich1701

It’s not just the appearance of the car’s suspension reacting to the bumps that is missing, although it would be nice to have. I want it to actually affect the way the car behaves too, I want to see the whole chassis jolt a bit when it hits a bump, just like reality.

  • Substance242

So, it seems like at the start you can not make the mistake of starting too soon? Pity, but maybe it’s just some setting. I also don’t think the player would be able to drive F1 with traction control really off. I still want cool down lap… But overall it looks very good and I am looking forward to some more F1 championships of mine. :)

  • F1Racer

One thing I should correct you on there RKip.    You may have bought into IRacing, but you don’t own it.  There’s nothing to own except a subscription.   Once that runs out, if you don’t re-new, all you bought is useless.    That’s one of the big downers of IRacing.  You can’t play offline and don’t ever own any software at all.

  • F1Racer

If, as you bodly point out, IRacing is the king of sim games (lets exclude Flight Sim X seeing as how you didn’t stipulate racing games),  then whether or not there is an animated driver is not something that is a determining factor in people deciding that.

To make a sim ‘a king’ it needs to have accuracy and spot on physics.  By a country mile, IRacing is closer to that than any other racing sim out there.
It doesn’t fail to be the ‘King of sims’ because there is no animated driver when other sims have them.
GTA IV has driver animation but who’s physics accuracy are you going to vote for ?

Are you trying to say IRacing is not the top sim because it hasn’t got an animated driver ?  If so I`d like to know what would be in it’s place.   Otherwise your post seems rather silly.

  • moschum

i bet you think forza 3 is challenging, lol!

  • Dave

I think you,i and others might be looking for that but its hard to know if  we will find it.
Definitely not preordering but am still hopeful that a good review from someone i trust comes out and says the car handling and ffb made it worth buying.
Even the codies forums seems to have a lot of dissatisfied members in relation to the damage system both visually and how its affecting or not affecting car handling based on the vids they have seen.
I cant see how so many people give them credit saying its their first F1 game and that people should be thank full for what ever they produce and that itll get better in the next release. Its not like they are giving it away for free.

  • F1Racer
  • F1Racer

    Tyre deformation anyone ?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=365c94ORqTU&feature=player_embedded

I’m amazed it lasted that long.

  • Boba fren

If i judge of how the car reacts it’s nothing more than visual deformation, looks nice but nothing beyond that

    :/

  • F1Racer

The driver does seem to be slow because of it so I do suspect it is affecting handling.
Considering the other details CM are putting in this game I doubt they’d spend time on such a neat deformation model and not have it affect handling.

Don’t forget that F1-2010 does have a ‘visial damage only’ mode too if you don’t want the damage affecting handling.

  • Mike Chaney
