F1 2010 – First Previews of 2010 Cars Released

After showing us lots of preview footage with the temporary 2009 season cars, Codemasters has now released the first six previews of  their F1 2010 title, featuring this year’s F1 cars.

The screenshots show us lots of racing action and lots of rain at Montreal, the previews also showcase some very sharp textures and the complete absence of the often-criticised sepia color tone.

Following their maiden Formula One title that was released only for the Playstation Portable and the Nintendo Wii, Codemasters will be bringing the 2010 Formula One season to the PC, the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. F1 2010 has been confirmed to be released in September 2010.

this is funny… because i think its gonna raing this weekend in Montreal..HAHA

  • karan733

    Why so dark? :weird:

  • stabiz

    Looks like Black Bean.

  • David Wright

Looks brilliant! There are even water drops on the cars.

  • altrezia

Why is the virgin’s front wheel hovering?

  • Balazsryche

I wonder how the drivers see through those visors on a rainy day…

  • http://www.racingpaintshop.com BORDER

shouldnt the water drops not be there though… the car is in motion…

very nice effect , but in the wrong situation !!

  • http://racingrenders.com F1Racer

Looks like some members from the ‘lets-find-a-fault’ club are in again.

Never mind any other aspect of the game, I just can’t imagine what a game/sim has to look like to satisfy people here. This is better than anything out there right now by miles and still its not good enough it seems.

The only fault I would mention if I had to is HRT on the Hispania car instead of Bruno or Karun. But so what ?

I guess the expectations for perfection in every detail from some people will always be here but I really don’t know why its so necessary. I think its just being picky for the sake of it and almost like some kind of contest to see who can find something that no-one else has mentioned yet.

Anyway carry on, as it’s the only way some of you know how to be…

  • Howie47

The car’s aren’t moving, they are captured in stills! Looks like they’ll get the Best Graphics award, for Sim racing. Makes me want to try it just to experience the graphics! It’s going to take allot of GPU power!

  • Dark Racer

Looks good to me, hoping for some video footage at E3

The cars are moving ;) Or do you think, they parked on the track in racing position? If it would be correct, the drops shoul move to the back. But I think, it nevertheless looks pretty good.

The HRT looks kinda green to me :weird:

I liked the raindrops on the camera lense,
but on the cars the raindrops are far to apparent imo.

I wouldnt say its the best looking sim out there.
It´s certainly not the most realistic looking one.
The overall look is too greyish/washed out for my taste (Even the shots where it doesnt rain).

If you take a look at the iracing comparison shots, they look a lot more realistic to me (even ISI Sims do).

  • Loetkoe

Why 1) the visors are purple (almost no one uses that colour) 2) are they using them in such a weather? :D

  • JGoenR

Loetkoe>> in wet weather they use colorless visors.

Screens look kinda nice. However I don’t really like that yellow/grey view.

  • Howie47

I was trying to be funny. Just hadn’t had my morning coffee. :shame: I would be very surprised if the rain drops were animated. Seems they could at least have added some water streak effect to the car surface. Maybe it’s not finished?
And No, I don’t think “ISI games” currently compare, or even come close to the graphics. Not even “Shift”. I think you’d have to be very prejudice to think so! Unless I’m just getting blind? And what’s with all the color tone criticism? Seems like ever body thinks they’re an artist. While I was for most of my life. The tone is subjective, (their is no exact formula for how gray, brown, light or dark a picture should look; because the atmosphere is always different.)

  • http://simscreens.blogspot.com 6e66o

Howie47:(their is no exact formula for how gray, brown, light or dark a picture should look; because the atmosphere is always different.)

It seems though for Codemasters the atmosphere is always grey/brown/dark.

  • Howie47

6e66o: It seems though for Codemasters the atmosphere is always grey/brown/dark.

Color, (in real life) should never be 100% bright. It should always be muted by the ambiet light. Which will carry it’s own color. That reflects in every object it lights up. Why the above pics should be “gray”, because of the gray clouds! I’m not noticing overly muted colors in “Dirt2″. Do you?
The ISI games seem mostly (cartoonish). Which I think is because of their dated graphic’s lighting capabilites. Which is less capable of showing reflected light and the colors it adds to objects.

  • http://simscreens.blogspot.com 6e66o

Well, for me its no question which one is closer to real life:
    http://www.abload.de/img/atmoau68.jpg
(talking about the color atmosphgere only)

I´m tired of this discussion however.

Just cant believe people actually try to scientifically justify a color scheme to be realistic, when its obviously a cinematic style.

  • carbonfibre

Bit of a mixed bag of emotions really. The rain drops on the level surfaces look stunning… real progress towards redefining weather effects in the racing genre, but it’s clearly not being affected by winds at that speed.

Again, in some situations the lighting and colours are good enough and realistic under the conditions, in others (looking mostly at shot 2) the weather is evidently clear in the background but the colours and light are washed out, grey.

Smells like something underhand is being done between the combination of global light parameters, camera filters and post-fx.

In a perfect world, lighting under dark clouds would be handled entirely by global light. In my speculation, I feel the Ego engine isn’t up to that so CM are using extra cinematic camera filters to complete to look which gets undone easily when the conditions aren’t just right.

CM are beginning to journey into the uncanny valley with these effects, especially now that the audience has much experience with the content this time around.

No wonder sims have been avoiding weather for so long. In favour of CM, if GT5 included rain after all, it would have to be better than this, and with limited horsepower that’s a very tall order.

  • Wil

My God! I was used to have fun of all this retard comments back in time but now I dont have words to describe it…
I only hope that CM never take any idiot comment from here as basis.

  • mrwout

Looks really stunning, and about the droplets maybe they just look unaffected by the wind because were looking at still images, maybe they’ll seem to be moving when youre watching it in motion, dunno but nonetheless even now they look absolutely stunning?.

One thing I know for sure, I’m going to need to get myself a new PC :(

  • Harpo245

I agree with F1Racer. people are getting very nitpicky here. I mean, seriously. Of all the faults (not that there are many. Looks stunning), you’re pointing out the fact that they’re using purple visors!? Not that you’ll see them going by the cars at 150mph… Facing the other way.

Also, 6e66o, just ’cause you took the picture doens’t make it ultra realistic. Sure, it does look good, no doubt, but it’s just taking the realism in a sidestep. I’m no fan of the champagne filter, but yours is far off aswell. No game is perfect. No game will even come close (apart from iRacing and Gran Turismo).

Just had to get my 2 cents out there.

    RELEASE THE FLAMES!

  • hoboracer

I’m gonna need a demo with an FPS counter. My pc will either cry or fry when I load that game on it.

  • vik15

    6e66o:

Agree on that. They replaced brown muted colors to gray one. The game has great looking effects but that weird “cinematic”style spoils everything. I can understand muted colors in a kind of retro movie or in a gloomy horror plot. After all a movie is just an illustrated story telling and anything that may input something to overall impression is good. Games are quite different things. Especially sim games. They pretend to be a real world and anything that makes them look less real is getting annoying very soon, whatever interesting effect it may be. That cinematic brown, gray or indigo muted style is even nothing new. It was interesting firstly but after seeing it in every game for years I can say I am sick of it already. It’s a pity that with such a small thing otherwise great looking game is going to be behind its potential.

  • r4c3

This is the first time you see rain drops on f1 car in a racing game and all you can do is complain? I bet if this were screen shots of rfactor2 all of you naysayers would be writing that it looks so good that you just jizzed in you pants. Admit it the only reason you are saying it looks bad is because of Codemasters.

  • Jos

right, so far I havent seen any impressive non-rain screenshots really…..

  • QHr

helmets looks really shitty, if there was no number on car i wouldn’t guess it is Alonso (last screen) but still i’m waiting for this game

  • Howie47

You hit the nail on the head. These guys are fishing for some thing to criticize. Maybe their jealous modders?

  • scca1981

I think it looks good. I’m not going to judge much because they ARE early wip shots. When I have a demo or the game I can play for myself then i’ll judge. My only fear is the physics. As much I like dirt 2 the tarmac physics are still crap with the driving a hovercraft effect. I hope cm gets is right this time. I have some faith because just think of the money into this project especially with the F1 license. If they bomb this game it could really damage the company.

  • creatorex

It is genial. But drops should not look like drops. They should trace a water thin line following aerodynamic behavior because of the speed and etc.

  • migf1

All I can say is that if the physics match even halfway those gorgeous graphics, F1 2010 have the potential to blast away most of what we use today.

Is there any info on the minimum and recommended PC specs, yet?

  • RKipker

    AGREED, :sd:

You guys are killing me… let’s just wait for the release! So my crap everytime they post images, they may just drop the PC version next year as it will not be worth they’re effort.

The images for rain in a game to date are better than any I’ve seen with rain. I’m sure they’ll be some streaking and animation though very minor, to the rain while driving in cockpit . Remember the source and effort it takes to run this type of game and would you really need rain drops streaking across the car when you can not manage 15FPS due to these affects?

CM… I’m ALL IN…. I will get for Xbox 360 and PC just to compare and run both!

  • Dazmaniac

Like all recent CM releases (GRID, DIRT:2) the game looks graphically superb.

Only ‘fault’ I’d pick with the imahes, is that if these cars are supposed to be the 2010 models, the tires are wrong.

They no longer have the coloured stripe down the tread, its now in the tire-wall.

  • Harpo245

I couldn’t care less if this is ultra realistic or not. All my friends play FIFA, like fantasy football. They buy shit teams, bring them to a playable standard and try to suceed. This is after winning with all the top teams. You can’t really do that rFactor or Race 07, so this is why I can’t wait for F1 2010. The career mode alone will lure me into buying. Sure the MP is capped to half the normal field, but I’ll be too busy trying to get HRT onto the podium :)

  • Slimjim

not sure why some people complain.. we have nothing close to this when it comes to graphics and weather..GT5 will have awsome graphics… but no F1..
i’m sure you will be able to mod/paint skins, add this or that changes… it always happens… people need to have it there way or it sucks…
rF2 and iRacing only whished to look this good. hopefully the physics are not crap.. Dirt 2 felt very good, lets hope they can get it close

    Dazmaniac
you need to check some real pics of F1 rain tires, they do have the stripe on the tread..

  • Harpo245

Slimjim, to be fair, iRacing does look very good, one of the more realistic sims and realistic looking sims. Doesn’t have the outright detail of GT5, but close. Then again, that’s what you would expect at $15 for a virtual car.

  • captain_underpants

I daresay all the nitpckers and complainers will be buying the game anyway, so it’s all a bit moot.

I do know I won’t be though. Which is a shame, because the game looks awesome. Tell me, with everybody complaining about the ‘always on’ DRM on Ubisoft games, did no-one notice that Codemasters had bought in the same thing with Dirt2? I did not appreciate not being able to save my SINGLE PLAYER game just because my net happened to be down.

  • FooAtari

I must have missed the memo that good graphics equaled a good simulation…

  • David Wright

FooAtari: I must have missed the memo that good graphics equaled a good simulation…

You didn’t – no one has issued that memo :)

The news concerns screenshots so naturally people comment on the graphics.

  • Allyc4t

TBH if you get a well made track and a well made car model in rfactor it looks just as good if not better than GT’s or the screens we have from F1 2010. The graphics aren’t that spectacular. Not impressed by the rain drops on the cars either, are the cars parked or something? pretty sure you wouldn’t get stationary rain drops on a formula 1 car doing 250 k’s…

  • michael

They haven’t released any official ones. But, I imagine if you can run Dirt 2 well, you’ll be able to run this.

    Yeah, from twitter :- http://twitter.com/formula1game
“Exact specs haven’t been confirmed yet, but think DiRT 2 recommended specs but maybe ever so slightly higher.”

Direct x11 will be supported of course.

Lots of similar one liner snippets to find inbetween the usual “got drunk, went to loo” stuff on the developers / designers twitter feeds too :-
