F1 2010 – First Developer Video Trailer Released

As promised, Codemasters have just released the first of their developer diary videos, introducing us to some of their staff and showing off first-ever moving footage of F1 2010 for the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Footage in the video has been taken from a pre-alpha version of the title that was shown-off in London today, showing us some gameplay action at Monza.

Following their maiden Formula One title that was released only for the Playstation Portable and the Nintendo Wii, Codemasters will be bringing the 2010 Formula One season to the PC, the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. F1 2010 has been confirmed to be released in September 2010.

So many promises to keep up to. My past experience with Codemasters (Operation Flashpoint – Dragon Rising, and a few other titles) tells me that they’ll announce that 70% of those features mentioned in this video will not be in the game 2 months before release. Seems like a usual routine from CM now.

    Hopefully, I’ll be wrong.

Judging from this video, I think they finally got the lightning effects done right this time. No more overexaggerated bloom effects.

  • http://racingrenders.com F1Racer

Well I wont be pre-judging events that haven’t happened yet.
I get the ‘we are never satisfied’ angle but what happened on another title, is another title.

Yikes, the animated pit stop looks friggin’ incredible, even down to the front trolley guy slowing moving aside before the car leaves the garage.
I hope we get full driving control in and out of the pits, that’s kinda crucial as making a good stop by stopping on your marks is all part of the F1 race.
But if, for whatever reason, CM don’t want to program the code that allows you to stop 1 foot in front of your marker and have the crew shuffle up thus costing you time, then that would be consistent with the no mechanial failures, no formation lap and no safety car features.

Gameplay looks to be from a console but doesn’t look too bad from the quick flashes we got (as seems to be the norm these days of showing 10 or so clips lasting 0.5s).

Maybe being a bit geekish but would like to see that steering wheel have some resistance in the turns like you see in real life, and not totally smooth.

There is no real athmosphere….no normal light…just a surreal world with lots of blur and yellow light..

And say goodbye to a real simulator, i thing we will see dirt type physics…they say different market than that from dirt 2!! but not dirt 1…..

I want just 2 things…real physics and good graphics.I dont care about other stuff…Just to drive a car that has wheigt(a thing that all codemaster games lost)and to move realistically on corners.

Had you try Live for Speed demo? Its got the “decent physics” part only, though. Decent physics in terms of handling – while the vehicle destruction effects are pretty sub-par.

arhimede: .And say goodbye to a real simulator,

Anyone else wanna completely write F1-2010 off at this stage ?
It’s still premature but then it is consistent with a sim racers mentality. Slag it off first cos its something new for us, complain and whinge later, then completely write it off after that. All after a video and a couple of screenshots.

  • Diromo

Amazing footage  . I like it. I like arms animation, rain, and pit crew

I am also completely writing off this game, lets take all the little things that F1 fans love in games out, dumb it down for 12yo Xbox junkies. In this day and age ALL codemasters and most game companies do is dumb down products for the 12yo’s who just want an easy game.

As much as i want this to be a sim, it won’t be. Will save my money for rFactor 2 when it will have dynamic weather as well and this PoS game will have nothing over it. If you want to waste $100 on it GLHF on money badly spent

  • ZombieJim

This video fills me with hope. I really, really hope Codies don’t muck up what right now looks like a great thing.

However, brace for almost tangible levels of negativity from the “hardcore-ists” no doubt.

  • stabiz

Does anybody here actually think this will be on par with the best rFactor F1 mods? Really? Mod makers make stuff from passion, these guys just want to make a lot of money – actually they have to, the licence must have set them back a few euros. Ergo: Todays mass gaming enviroment is all about cinematic experience(c)TM and plug n play game mechanics where having an actual brain is optional. So yeah, I think its gonna suck.

  • http://racingrenders.com F1Racer

    @Allyc4t,

Well it looks like their going through an awful lot of trouble animating those pit crews and adding dynamic weather just to please 12yr old xbox junkies.
Although I doubt all xbox junkies are 12yrs old. You’d be surprised.

I reckon a 12yr old xbox junkie wouldnt care about such features. So why have CM bothered with that ?

The only thing we need to be concerned about in the dumbing down area is physics.
Right ? At least that seems to be the vibe. People say that physics is all the counts until the time comes, of course.

Oh well whatever, let this community carry on its pessimistic moaning ways. Why change now ? It’s done us a world of good so far.

  • FooAtari

Well let’s just hope the game is more exciting than the first race of the season was.

Ugh, I just feel sad for the people that are still trying to make themselves believe that this will have something for simracers to enjoy. It would be pointless to make a major game for simracers, because it’s a niche audience. It’s not like something between arcade and simulation will do either, as there’s already some pretty damn good mods for rFactor and GTREvo, plus iRacing is getting a F1 car sometime this year.

I do have to say though, this game looks terrible. Where’s the color? It’s nothing but shades of brown and grey. Although, that seems to be really popular with games in general nowadays.

  • jimmyc

any chance codemasters you could actually show us some video footage of F1-2010 ?
nice to hear you talking about it but show us something please …..

  • Zenitchik

If there is no special mode where I can sign photographs, I’m not buying it!

BTW, will there be a drift mode? that would be nice, and police too, I like being chased by police

  • http://racingrenders.com F1Racer

drowsy: Ugh, I just feel sad for the people that are still trying to make themselves believe that this will have something for simracers to enjoy.

Don’t say you feel sad. You make it sound like we’re retarded or something. Well sue me for being optimistic. Someone is going to enjoy this on some level. I enjoy DIRT2 in a different way to rFactor and GTR2. Is that a cardinal sin ?
Christ you make it sound like it wont be any better then GP1 ffs.

What a cynical lot. Im not saying people are going to be wrong about how this game will turn out, they might be right. But no one is in a position to judge that yet and some seem to think otherwise.

  • drowsy

Well sure. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if I found the game enjoyable. It just won’t be in a simulation kind of way. It’ll probably be similar to NFS:Shift actually. Has nothing to do with real-world physics, but some people here absolutely love that game.

My point was though, it won’t be a simulation.

  • http://racingrenders.com F1Racer

drowsy: My point was though, it won’t be a simulation.

It won’t ? Oh right so now we know. We don’t need to discuss that point any further then. We have it confirmed right here. Oh well there goes another hope for the simmers :( Back to rFactor.

There’s another event this afternoon so more material is most likely coming up.

    Stay tuned

  • alexands

Call me a fool but I am in. It looks like an F1 car, it has cool pit animation.

I’ll be hooking my racebase cockpit and G25 up to my PS3 (I am actually an Xbox junkie) and enjoying the hell out of this game.

If I can avoid having to play the thing on a PC I always will. The nice thing with consoles is I can stay out of the constant PC upgrade battle and just play. Do I own RFactor and GTR yep.

    But I prefer consoles.

  • ChadSmith2

All of you guys heard him say they were making the handling similar to Dirt 2 and GRID. We all know neither of those are actual sims, Dirt is close and GRID is nowhere near a sim. I’m sorry, but I have no faith in the physics of this game.

Sure it looks good (not in my opinion) and has flashy colors and blurry stuff and rain and movable hands on the steering wheel, but the physics are where it is going to lack. No doubt about it. They aren’t targeting the hardcore sim racers.

    Flashy sells.

  • massarob

    looks promising
and the physic in DiRT2 is in some way better than in other games or even sims, e.g. FFB and countersteering…….try that in an ISI based sim or even in iR=fail, maybe just NKPro is realistic in that department ATM.

  • http://racingrenders.com F1Racer

ChadSmith2: All of you guys heard him say they were making the handling similar to Dirt 2 and GRID.

Nope he really said ‘we are actually tailoring the car handling to a very different market to that of DIRT2 and GRID.’

See its mis-interpretations like that which twist perceptions.

I noted that the lead guy there, the one who gave that quote was the Quality and Assurance guy for Grand Prix 3. Thats not too bad. GP3 for its tome was king of the hill.

  • jonneymendoza

whats the point in making an f1 game that isnt a sim, this is clearly gonna be aimed at f1 fans, and an f1 fan is gonna want something as close to the real thing as possible.

In order for that to happen, codemasters should give the f1 licence to simbin.

  • gtrNL

    F1Racer:

    I respect your positive mindness.

I tried it when GTR Evo was coming up, everybody was negative, but believe me, you can’t convince them. You’ll just have to wait for it to be released, hope it’s realistic, and laugh at them in the face (I did when Evo was released :sd: ).

hehe, well I dunno if I`d laugh in their face, but I would sure hint at an ‘I told you so’.
Hey they might be right, F1-2010 might turn out to be arcade nonsense, but I think my point is no-one here is in a position to judge that at this stage. The footage is from the pre-alpha version and this game has features such as tyre-blistering that you wouldn’t expect they would have bothered about for an arcade game.
They have a lead guy who worked with GP3, a real F1 driver to do the testing and seem to show signs of at least some commitment towards a sim despite the sacrificlal loss of some pretty important features.
So its easy to see why the sim racers mentality would turn to the dark side already. It’s easy to push it there.

I also realise that being a pessimist is better in that if they game is better than they thought, then thats a bonus, where as an optimist can only be let down unless it goes beyond his expectations.
I do believe that in general a sim racers expectations are too high for todays market and considering how niche us lot are.

I’m just not passing judgment on this yet until I’ve seen more than flash footage and a couple of screenshots. Let me play this in a 1-car 1-track demo, then we can talk.

  • Howie47

If this is any thing like Dirt2 then it will be a grand slam home run. It will be great fun off line as well as on. It will leave all the Sim’s of that past in the past. Where they belong. Give us a car that can be driven like a real car, in the unreal Sim environment. A game that makes you feel like your really in the cockpit. Not a car that leaves you feeling detached. That has to be driven with your head and imagination, as the Sim’s of today.

  • thegamer23

Uff , i want more videos and images today   :shame:

  • Paul Kelly

This is a crossroads title for Codemasters. Will it return to its simulation roots from back in its heyday of the Colin McRae Rally and TOCA series, or will it stick to the cash-and-carry mentality of DIRT and GRID?

    Will be interesting to see.

  • f0xx

It sounds good, lets see if they will keep up to their promises.

  • thegamer23

    no news? :(

  • http://www.virtualr.net Montoya

Sit tight, the day isn’t over yet

  • Siggs

It’s just like the SHIFT release info all over again…

I read the articles, but I won’t dare look at the comments anymore, the rage from some people and the complete slagging off, even at this stage, is just not worth my effort to read.

btw, SHIFT came out quite well.

  • DeDios

Personally i don’t like at all this new graphic philosophy; too much effects. I prefer iRacing graphic..clean.

  • creatorex

    Dirt2 is quite simulation.

@F1Racer- Amen! Don’t know what good it does for people to make blanket statements of negativity- does it make people feel better to jump to these conclusions based on seconds of pre-alpha gameplay and other bits of info that are now known? I don’t see them offering me an alternative F1 experience with a career mode, animated pit stops, simulation of marbles and tyre blistering, etc…

  • mikemav

Yeah, I’m sure they’ll be happy to give away a license they paid millions for, to give a smaller development house that caters to a super-niche market a shot at it. Thanks for contributing.

We thought TOCA/TOCA 2 were sims only because we didn’t know any better. Compare cornering speeds and laptimes to real life and you realise they were not serious sims.

The problem with F1 is while championships might be close and the backgound changes (new teams and driver changes) are interesting, the actual racing is boring. Codies will have to spice it up somehow.

  • thegamer23

i want a game like grand prix 4 so i don’t want an extreme realism like rfactor or iracing.

Grand prix 4 is fun and only a bit realistic (great boxes animations like f1 2010 , realistic rain effects and a good car physic).

    So from f1 2010 i want:
    -good graphic
    -great damage model
    -An intense f1 experience!
    -Decent A.I
    -Good car handling

    this is it.

  • Desmolad

Check out this Bloke, he was present during the press launch today.

He is talking about Blistering tyres, Marbles offline, Engine and wing management, cooling your wet weather tyres in puddles on drying tracks……………………… If its arcade…its gonna be the best damn arcade game ever..

  • thegamer23

yeah , i hope it will be a great game.
but no official news from london? this is evening now :(

  • Suarez10

    Check this out:
If Codemasters get this to work properly it will be a SIM-Racing first!!! :sd:

    http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2010/03/17/f1-2010-first-play/

Codemasters are especially proud of their track simulation which they call ‘active track technology’. This re-calculates the grip levels on the surface for every 30cm the players’ car travels, taking into account build-up of rubber, marbles from the tyres and, of course, the weather.

This has a clear effect on your car’s handling. Not only do your tyres pick up dirt if you go off the track, but braking off-line is trickier. Go out on the track in the first minutes of Friday practice and you’ll find it’s ‘green’ – low on grip – making your lap times sloewr. You’l have to pay attention to how the track develops to pick the best moment to set a time in qualifying.

When rain falls the track gets greasy and eventually puddles develop. If the rain stops a dry line begins to emerge and you’ll have to look after your tyres by seeking out damp patches of track.

We saw some video of the rain effects and they look genuinely impressive. Clouds of spray billow off the cars and reflections shimmer in the puddles on the track.

  • vik15

looks similar to GRID. Too much brown that makes it look surreal and like a 100 years old photo. I would prefer the colors of the real world.

  • http://racingrenders.com F1Racer

It sounds incredible Suarez10, thanks for that. Red Bull shots look neat too.

One thing I noticed in the 2nd video (on board with the Red Bull) was the limited amout of steering wheel movement going on in-car compared to the users steering wheel. I hope thats adjustable.

Also it was clear that the guy didn’t know the track at all but on the first crash into the wall the car seemed to just hit the wall and stay there. No rebound or lateral movement. Maybe its down to the driver aids he must have had on (god mode for sure). Kimi took a nice dive over the Red Bull too.
Still its pre-alpha so much work still to be done. Unfair to judge it too harshly at this stage.
We can all post our comments on the CM forum if we want to draw their attention to something that they can maybe look at before it goes gold. Better than crying on here and no-one listening.

  • Siggs

F1Racer: I hope we get full driving control in and out of the pits, that’s kinda crucial as making a good stop by stopping on your marks is all part of the F1 race.

    from the article just posted;

“Some of this can be fixed with a quick visit to the pits but make sure you stop on your marks – one video they showed us featured a car knocking a team member down.”

Sounds great. The onboard lap on monza is nice, and this shot of teh dirt on the tyres, the tyre wear and blistering ideas being thrown around…

    Nice found suarez ;)

The sand sticks to the tyres :o

    Wow this is geting better!

    Monza looks good :D

  • RKipker

    creatorex: Dirt2 is quite simulation.

I like Dirt 2… so cool! Though I don’t think it will be quite as aracady as Dirt 2 appeals to younger kids, I think they’re going to improve on the Dirt 2 physics…. I’m looking forward to it and can confirm it is a must buy for me!

  • http://racingrenders.com F1Racer

    Siggs:
from the article just posted;“Some of this can be fixed with a quick visit to the pits but make sure you stop on your marks – one video they showed us featured a car knocking a team member down.”

Yeah but just found out that the game does indeed control your car for you in the pits. All you get to do is hit the brakes at the right time or knock over the front jack man. :(

Kinda pathetic that they take this control away from us because FOM doesn’t want us mowing down pit crews.
So why not make the pit crew so they can’t have collisions? Or do it like GP4 did, where you had control but the game helped you in if needed.
Without that full control I think it breaks the rhythm of the game and the intensity you are feeling and the adrenaline of making a pitstop will be lost.
I don’t buy their excuse for this one at all. At no point in a race should the computer take over for you. Not even after the chequered flag. You should be able to drive the parade lap and come back to parc ferme on your own.
    At least in sim mode.

rF2 hopefully will give us these options.

  • simosimosimo

Hey guys, am I the only guy around here who’s optimistic about this game? LOL! I heard that the game will include 2 modes: An Arcade and a Simulation!Well, I don’t know CM’s idea of a simulation, but all the gamers were jabbin’ and anticipatin F1 2010 to be a SIM that i think the developers might finally listened to the people’s desires and might made this game a SIM! Cause honestly, If this game bring me the physics of Dirt and grid after nearly 2 years of anticipation, this will be an EPIC FAIL! On the other hand, Don’t forget that Rfactor 2 is around the Corner! I actually think that RF2 will Beat F1 2010!
