F1 2010 – Codemasters Clarify On AI Issues

The countless issues with the AI in Codemasters’ recently-released F1 2010 title have been the subject of much discussion in the community lately, leading Codemasters to release a detailed statement in their official forum.

The posting clarifies on various AI related issues that have been reported so far, offering some background info on how the system works as Codemasters points out that the AI isn’t scripted. Furthermore, Codemasters elaborate on the reason why the AI times are simulated in practice and qualifying, so make sure to check out the whole text here.

Meanwhile, the developers are busy working on the promised patch, hoping to adress as much of the problems as possible. Details on what the patch will contain and when it will be available aren’t disclosed yet.

Good to see the Codies responding. Hope it doesn’t take too long.  I’m still waiting on the patch before making a decision on purchasing.

  • Raymond Tsui

Well atleast Codemaster hasn’t gone down the path of EA’s response to bugs and glitches, which was no response what so ever.

Hopefully, F1 2010 would be awesome when it gets patched up.

  • opticalust

Good news. Now give us a response on the FPS issues!!!

  • mike88

    lol what a joke.

good job codemasters your PR officer deserves raise.

nice attempt at ignoring the major flaws of the game

    -too many tyre punctures
-no ai lap time calculation because of time accelartion? really what the hell is this f1 2002 had no problems
    -no gap/interval times
-AI not affected by fuel and tyres

  • Fuzzi0n

Hah, the bit about losing fidelity of the car physics cracked me up, they’re crap anyway. Also consider that Race 07, GTR 2 and a load of other games have a option to speed it up and the physics seem to be fine there. Why put a feature into a game that you know doesn’t work with your physics engine?

Seems like a poor excuse for something they cant be bothered to take the time to sort out – its a game breaker as it is so leaving it alone is just stupid.

  • sommergemuese

Lol Codemasters as I said beforce.

Bot no one wanted to believe me CM is creating crap..

  • Bjørn

I am actually satisfied by their response. I dont care if the times during Practice and Qualy are “generated”.

The racing is intense and fun. I am really liking this game and it will only get better with the patch.

  • mike88

also not to mention AI just randomly slowing down in slow corners.

codemasters should thank everyone who bought the game for free beta testing.

  • Vettel

Indeed, that part is very annoying of the AI. Had a race at Spa and at Blanchimont the AI brakes for the fast right hander, which can easily be taken flat out. I took it flat out, but the AI car in front of me slowed down, which caught my out and I rammed it, resulting in a penalty. Very annoying….

  • Dan

This is why I’m most probably waiting for F1 2011, it should be a much better game, this entire game is pretty much a beta test.

  • Fokkak Menny

So whenever a game with a few bugs comes out, it’s automatically called a beta?
Honestly I haven’t experienced any issues with the game, besides, I highly doubt there will be F1 2011. Not that 2010 sucked, on the contrary, it’s a great game, but the next season is already drawing close. Let’s just see what Schumi is gonna do in 2011. There’s been a lot of hype over the new cars, and damn I can’t wait.

  • Wesley

What an post(on the codies forums) full of bullshit. The cars resemble race pace, well, i havent seen a car irl drive in one lap 3 seconds faster then before, and certainly not when you are clocking qualifieing times by yourself. Then they say every driver has its own skills, every driver handles the same when overtaking and due to the empty tanks they run they start way quicker then yourself. Then the Qualifieing times that are generated, why the hell didnt they at least put in a system that drops their laptime when they made a mistake? Now the AI is always clocking an time without any mistakes, thus as fast as they could go.

The game experience is an complete joke, it is great at first, but then you begin to notice it and it becomes simply annoying.

  • Wesley

oh and, whats with the penaltys? you get way too quick an warning, at the start when we didnt even hit each other(well it wasnt noticable for me that i hit him) i got an warning for causing an collision. Also when you have spun(which is the hardest part of the game) you get an warning for blocking, I mean, that is plain bullshit.

Also this ‘Great atmosphere’ is cbullcrap, after only the third race the interviewer already started asking the same questions, so then in total there were 6 questions asked before repeating.

  • AndreasT

LOL, CM is a professional company (despite the many many bugs, which must happen if the time schedule is too challenging for the given resources). As such they of course issue a statement that is meant to satisfy the people. Nothing more, nothing less. Actually, it does not mean too much, just that they promise to fix some bugs. We’ll have to wait and see what they will come up with. ATM it’s just PR… once again.

  • mike88

LOL this video is pure genious

    sums up f1 2010 perfectly

  • Markuz

Can’t stop laughing dude! Awesome! Bravo!!!

  • Markuz

Still soooo sad there’s no word about the framerate and audio issues. And hey, I saw posts about 360s having framerate issues too!

  • Markuz

Still soooo sad there’s no word about the framerate and audio issues. And hey, I saw posts about 360s having framerate issues too!

  • qawaza

haha nice videos…LMAO really…sadly the AI is one of the worst AI i have seen in years..& we are already in the year 2010…sad case..

  • Markuz

Please don’t forget the framerate and audio issues too!!! :(

  • Markuz

I wouldn’t mind having F1 2011 as long as they fix this game. I’ve already waited long enough for this game only to be disappointed by its framerate and audio issues. To be honest I haven’t noticed any AI bugs because I’m spending more time trying to squeeze more framerates than actually playing the game.

  • Sensekhmet

Exactly. It seems the game has some sort of memory leak or something. The Barhrain practice session starts out at30-35FPS and the goes down the longer I drive. By the third lap it goes down to 15 FPS on the main straight: this makes the game unplayable for me at this time :(

  • jack mehoff

AWESOME video….the AI really isnt that bad…I had a blast at Istanbul in the rain, though I followed Mark Webber from the 3rd lap on till the end of lap 12…but hey they gave me the win and he finished 3rd…so I dont mind…

  • Vettel

Idiot. I just can’t believe these people. Finally there is an F1 game again, made by the best racing game company Codemasters (Don’t deny it, it’s true). And yet again all people do is nag nag nag nag nag nag. Really, do you know how hard it is to make a video game? Probably not. Give the guys some time to fix these issues and respect them for creating an F1 game which isn’t made of illegal stuff or made for an outdated game like rFactor.

  • sommergemuese

Yes play the casual crap and be happy

  • Markuz

@Vettel: You can only say that because you can play the game well. Some of us can’t. I hope you understand that sometimes these “idiotic” things are ways to get the attention of Codemasters to fix a game we bought.

I like the game, really. The immersion I got from it when I raced 100% on ULTRA LOW@25-50FPS is something I haven’t felt with any F1 or other “sim” mod. It’s just that it doesn’t like my system so it doesn’t want to run well. Please “allow” us to laugh at funny stuff while waiting for a fix that may make the game run well for us like how you might be running it now.

    *** E8400@3.6GHz, GTX 470, 4GB RAM, G25 ***

Nothing personal to Codies. You’re right, they made some of the best racing games lately like DiRT 2 or GRID. Unfortunately, as Dr. House said, you’re only great until your last screwup.

  • Markuz

It’s your fault “Vettel”, hahaha. Even if you have the fastest car this season and you’re the fastest demon on 4 wheels learn to overtake cleanly, racing is different from qualifying, don’t take others out! (just kidding!)

  • Markuz

Hey, the crap games you’re saying are still fun racing games! They’re not sim but they’re still fun! :)

  • zudthespud

I have never experienced Rubber banding with the AI, atleast when racing at the front. I’ve been chasing down p1 and on one lap I’d go 1 sec faster, on the next I would do the same time but he would match it. Feels fine to me.

  • Markuz

Can we safely conclude that right now those of us with dual cores will always have framerate issues? I’m not saying that if you have quad-core+ with a decent video card you can run this game HIGH@60FPS ave since I’ve seen people with such but still have poor framerates but I haven’t seen anyone with dual cores manage to do so.

Is that something that can help Codies narrow down the PC framerate and audio latency issues?

  • Krazee

I am running similar specs to you Markuz @ 1080p. No issues at all! I have everything on high and turned shadows to medium. My default when I loaded the games was 1080p with everything on high but I decided to turn shadows down was because of my experience with rFactor. Actually, your video card is better than mine (I’m running an ATi, and I assume you oc’d your CPU?).

Now if only I could get my wheel setup properly FFB just doesn’t seem to exist!?!?

Anyone got a good g25 setting?

  • Pudu

Well if it was Button you rammed then I agree the game has serious bugs. That shouldn’t have occured until after the end of Blanchimont as you were breaking into (Bustop) Chicane.

  • Markuz

Hey, what FPS are you getting? Im on Vista x64 btw. I envy you and Im still wondering what’s wrong here. Every other game I have runs so well, well above 60 fps at max yet I couldn’t even get 60 here on Ultra Low. What’s your sound card? Onboard? What motherboard do you have?

  • crampy

this patch could take some time seeing as the bug list is almost as big as Jessica Lopez’s rack!  :-P

  • AC

They say there’s no rubber banding, but there’s an AI folder called ‘catchup’ so what’s that for if it isn’t the rubber banding???

  • bob

I wouldn’t know how the AI even is, the game blue screens at startup!

  • Krazee

Hey Markuz, i’m running vista 32bit on an Asus P5Q, sound card is on board. Not sure exactly what fps I am getting but it is smooth, I am having the same problem with the game writing to the replay file but once I switch it off it should be ok. Short races are smooth, longer races get a bit jittery but only towards the end of the race – replay file problem i guess?

  • Markuz

Can you do a fraps on your system? Thanks!

  • Dave

Codemasters is now looking for 100 QA/games testers in the uk
    http://www.codemasters.co.uk/corporate/careers/job-details/index.php?id=273&territory=EnglishUK

Wonder if the others got fired or if they existed at all.

Anyone else miss Helios posting his PR(Propaganda) here

  • _Sy

More spin from codemasters, they get slated to hell about a games release, then magically they want 100 testers? What a load of shit. There just doing that for public appearance.

  • Dave

    I couldn’t argue with that

  • adrian

i have a dual (e7500) and have no problems at all with FPS

  • adrian

    what is your config?

  • svizzy

sold the game 1 week ago for 10€ more then i spend for it. best thing i could do with this game. have driven a whole season and it just fucked me up really. sadly they got the money from me in the first place. i got a company myself and if i sell such unfinished products i would quickly be out of business and thats what i wish them.

  • Gaiajohan

Strange since the game is just out since Friday last week.. So you just needed a couple of hours for a whole season? 10% races perhaps without qualy and so on.. I think I’m seeing a troll. You can’t be from USA as the game hasn’t been sold in the USA on disc. Only on Steam, so selling is impossible.

  • daemonicus

Personally I think the bashing of this game and Codemasters has got way out of hand. You think they have intentionally released a game with bugs and glitches so everyone can bash it up everywhere. That’s no good marketing you know. Why can’t you people just calm down and wait for the patch to come out as has been announced. It’s a video game. Get a life people. Gzuz.

  • Dave

    Thats exactly what they did.
There is no way that these bugs both hardware and gameplay could have got past the testing phase without being spotted.

  • svizzy

i got it on monday when the delivery to the stores started in germany. and no i did at least 30% racedistance and full weekend. i’m not a troll just because i don’t like the game.

  • sommergemuese

Mainly I talk about Operation Flashpooint

  • Markuz

Google for Codemaster CEO’s idea on how to defeat piracy: “Release unfinished games.”

  • Markuz

What’s your config Adrian? What graphic settings and what framerates are you getting?

  • Wendy did what?

you don’t know they “did it on purpose”.

such a view also implicitly suggests they are capable of doing it properly, they just chose not to.  When have CM ever done a driving game properly?  Dirt2 seems to me to just be an Nth-grade evolution of early Colin McCrae titles.   They’re faking it – I’m not convinced they are capable of doing a driving game properly.  Regardless whether they are capable or not they clearly never have managed it before.  Why expect them to start now – especially in a game that clearly has beautiful graphics?  There’s only so many resources on any given PC/console – you spend the resources how you choose.  CM spend the resources on eye-candy and a generally high set of production values.  Nice products, but leading-edge car-sims they ain’t.    Put up against sims that care more about the physics and actual racing they’re exposed.

I’d swear Dirt2 is using a central pivot point rather than 4 contact patches……regardless, that’s how it seems.  F12010 is the same I presume.  When people – like CM – make such great claims for their product, they should expect to be judged against such claims.  And not just by 8 yr olds either.

  • Wesley

This is working the opposite as no one minds buying an game that is to an low point playable but above that not due to the bugs.

And not on purpose? I certainly doubt that, It is just an regular thing, releasing game son the pc that require at least 10 patches to fix things.

  • Wesley

@Gaiajohan; The only troll here is you as apperantly you havent even played the game as then you would have noticed that in a career you’d have to qualify and 10% races arent even possible, so please, shut your mouth

  • Blacker

There have been many companies releasing unfinished games for years. The most blatant that has come to mind was Call of Duty: World at War, a game in which you couldn’t play online for the first week and a half it was out because the game, literally, wasn’t finished.

Personally, I think those who actually thought this game was going to be a simulation were only kidding themselves. It is simply my humble opinion, but CodeMasters has made a few entertaining games — None of them were simulations. Not GRID, not Dirt, none of them. At least they’ve come a looong way since IndyCar Series.

  • AI

Hrmmm, all this talk of the AI not pitting. How can anyone tell? I mean unless the you are 20s in the lead come out and 2nd place has overtaken you and is now 50s in the lead and stays there for the rest of the race and wins. I have never had this happen. As far as I can tell the AI always pits. I can’t tell if they change tyros or not though.

I am yet to test the AI cars driving in the wet on slicks.

One thing I was reading was the use of flashback confuses the game.

Pit stops are an issues when most of the field is pitting. Also I think the cars become ghosts as soon as they see the pit entry, I played on monza where I was about to pass a car on the inside just before the pit entry, the AI car was on the outside and was required to pit, well the result was that the AI car turned to the pits by going through me – no crash. Kind of was hoping that the AI would be forced to go around again or slow down or move to the inside a lot sooner.

Spa is sooooo much fun to drive!!!!

What’s up with the FFB? Are the F1 tracks super smooth or is there something wrong with my wheel? Or my settings are stuffed? I think if they fixed FFB and the pit stop issue that would be awesome..

Also, so what if the qual and practise times are generated, I just hope they are really racing when it comes time to race but there is no way of seeing. On a full race weekend I don’t have time to do all the practice sessions plus qualifying. In rfactor if we skip ahead to the next session doesn’t to program generate the times? How is what codemasters doing any different?

I bet the FIA was pushing codemasters to meet the release date cause of the $$$$s involved and all the marketing. They probably had designed the game really well but had to take shortcuts through the process. If you guys are hoping for everything to be patched forget it, best they will do is try and fix the AI to be better around the track and maybe the pitstop issues and hopefully the ffb? Everything else looks like they are major design issues, design issues are not bugs and they will tell you that the game was designed that was through feedback they received. Right or wrong that is they way it is.

  • Novum

I just have this to say.. AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA

    codemasters
    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHAAHHAA

relese the next game on tpb so our wallents dont scream of the missuse of money

  • Markuz

I wasn’t asking for a sim F1 game. I only wanted a polished racing game. What I got is something that even at LOW and ULTRA low still runs at 25-50 fps, most of the time on 28s. Why should I care if it’s a sim or not right now, I just want to play it but I can’t!

  • F1Racer

People noticed the AI not pitting, I think, by either following the AI cars for the car or working off the timings in that if the AI did pit along with the player then the standings or positions wouldn’t be altered too much.

But many people have reported this and we know how keen eyed sim-racers are, they don’t miss a trick.

To boot, Codemasters I think confirmed this as one of the bugs they will be looking to fix.

  • Sensekhmet

Hm, there really are some bugs. Just finished my first race yesterday (despite the low FPS). The result was pretty realistic, I finished 4 laps down in my Virgin after some spins. Some drivers were pretty low or high in the results but there were a few spins and crashes I think.
    BUT…
I finish the race and I can see that Alonso won. Keep in mind he is 4 laps ahead of me. And suddenly… bam. Chandhok apeears as the winner! I’m thinking something’s wrong with the winner display but after the race… nope, Chandhok is still the winner. HRT has 25 points *facepalm*
Also: quali and parctice times of the fastest driver: 1:57. Race time: 1:37 (I think) WTF? Here I was thinking ‘I’m only 4.5 secs off pace, not THAT bad’ and suddenly… damn. ;(

  • daemonicus

Yeah but it doesn’t have to be a career if you do a season in Grand Prix with 10% race distance. And who was the one that haven’t played the game? :)

  • F1Racer

Just a slightly o/t thing here…. for those who like doing videos etc…  it’s not documented as far as I know but in case you don’t know,  if you press F6 during race replays it removes the hud off the screen giving you an uncluttered screen.   Dunno why that option isnt visible in the replay.

  • Dave

The quali and practice times when faked even when not fast forwarded and are basically read from a  predetermined list in Codemasters F1 2010.
Previous games where you can fast forward the times are generated by the car physics and track conditions that are applicable to those cars.
Also in previous games if you do the full session the times are created by the cars doing their laps.

For some its quite a big difference. But for others this may not be game breaking.

Some of the things omitted (split times,no picking what car you want to see replay from, quali times etc seem to be decisions made by the devs to cover up the games bugs expecially as these have been present in racing games since the 90′s ,their statement alludes to how they wouldnt be able to calculate 23 fast forwarded cars times when including physics and track conditions when a modern start phone has more computing power than they had available when sending men to the moon.

Did you use the “+fullproc” instruction on the shortcut?

  • GLENN

    $35.99 for f1 2010

i have played 60 hours already. already down to a value of  $1.60 per hours worth of enjoy ment. thanks codemasters!!  moire fun then i have played in any recent race game. that is fun i have just doing time trials against other peoples ghost cars.

far cry to the $1,000 ive dumped into iracing. then to get wrecked out of 8 of 10 races in 1st time by idiots that are clueless.
but there fanboys are better at defending there game then they are racing it. if they were as good at racing as bashing other games it would be fantastic! or fantastically incomplete?

  • Markuz

I really envy you. I’m still on Sepang Grand Prix waiting for the patch before continuing. When the game works it’s marvelous. It’s when the bugs kick in that hurts, like why is it always my fault that I was spun from behind (too slow? hahaha!) or why my team decides to turn into public traffic enforcers letting everyone pass by me on the pits. Oh, it’s lowish framerate even on LOW/ULTRA LOW on my dual core hurts bad too.

But I’ve seen an update on the Codies forums. It seems that, finally, they have made a list of bugs to fix (a bit of sarcasm there)! It’s stated that some fixes are coming nicely already though. Of course it’s PR but it still gives me hope. It makes me think they’re already working on the patch even before release but wasn’t able to finish it as a day 1 patch.

  • Markuz

Hahaha. That may be the real reason why he’s no longer an F1 pilot right now. He gave all his sponsorship money to FIA and left none for his team. :D

Seriously, on the final timing screen where was Alonso? I think that happened to me too on my 100% Bahrain race. I mean the guy who I thought has won didn’t. To be honest I never cared then because I just wanted to finish my race on my Lotus.

First time I played a race at 100% distance, had to think differently (just be consistent, don’t damage the car, etc.), it was awesome and actually finishing it felt very rewarding. First time on a racing game that made me feel extremely happy even I didn’t even win. Now racing less than 100% feels like cheating. On other racers 100% makes me very drowsy on my 10th lap, dunno why.

But then it kinda feels weird that I can qualify 1st with a Lotus on dry then be totally outclassed during the start of the race. It’s like everybody else is speeding past me while I’m parked, lol. It makes me ask why didn’t the AI never had this pace during qualifying. Oh, yeah, qualy times are fake that’s why.

  • Glenn

i have dual core and get amazing fps on max. all you need is 4 gig ram  and a ati 5700 or better.

all in the video card. good luck man.

  • Glenn

amazing great video.  hey is that iracing? lol o ya i forgot the worlds best sim doesnt have rain. 8-)

  • Markuz

I have E8400@3.6, GTX 470, 4GB RAM. FPS@high, Melbourne Race using Fraps is 30-40, mostly on the 32s. At Medium the FPS goes up a tiny bit to 30-50, mosty staying on 35. On Low and Ultra Low it’s around 38 and 40 average respectively. What OS and audio device are you using?

I would like to add that those are the best framerates I got after updating all drivers including chipset. Also plugged my old Audigy 4 and went to Software Audio to use OpenAL. I’m really surprised of the framerate jump using software from my Realtek onboard to Audigy 4. Haven’t tried “benchmarking” with Rapture3D since setting everything on LOW and buffers to 7 eliminated most of the lag but some downshifts sounds are cut or not happening at all.

Btw, my target is 45 FPS minimum and average of 50. I still find that constant 60 FPS is really smooth and ideal but I guess I have to lower my “standards” for this game since even on ULTRA LOW I can’t hit 60 average. Heck on that setting it’s still just 40 average and hits 52 tops sometimes.

  • Markuz

I’m giving up on that. I have an E8400@3.6GHz, GTX 470, 4GB of DDR2 800, Vista x64. Can’t tell if it’s a driver issue (updated all drivers, even chipset, used old Audigy 4 which gained some FPS but still not good) or config issue (some people with quads get 60+ constant on Ultra High but others with similar quad-core setups with theirs are on the same boat as I am). Background processes are just the usual 1 antivirus, Steam plus Fraps for benchmarking.

My “good luck” rests upon the patch. I just hope they address these framerate issues some of us get.

  • glenn

i get +75  using 5770 i bought from tiger direct for $100.00 and that is with 2 screens on.
ati is the best card for the buck rite now ..lower price and more power. i love my old g force cards but my wallet and fps like ati better now :)

I have amd e6550 / with 32 bit windows.  so my guess is it is not your processor. are you using windows 7 or vista?

  • Markuz

I’ve given up doing the usual PC tweaks just to run this game. I made a thread at Codies’ Forums:
    http://community.codemasters.com/forum/f1-2010-game-1316/435287-would-explain-low-fps-pc.html

It shows on my CPU/GPU utilization graphs that the paddock utilizes the CPU and the GPU more compared to the track. What’s even more strange is it doesn’t seem that my CPU is the bottleneck at all on the track because if you look closely on the second halves of my dual-core CPU utilization (which is when I hit the track) it has bigger variations and lower overall utilization (like 50-70%). Compare that to the CPU utilization of the paddock which plateaued at around 80%! Also, the GPU Utilization from paddock to track drops from 70+ to a constant 60%.

I checked what happens if I go full screen. The GPU utilization went up to 68% as far as GPU-Z while my CPU utilization still is mess at 50-70% as far as I can tell on my graphs.

Can I request PC F1 2010 users to look at the thread and chime in? Some person got 50-80FPS on his 8800GTX and Q6600@2.2GHz while another with an i7 isn’t happy with the game’s performance on his system. I still can’t see the common thing which causes low FPS on some systems (only thing common is the game but even those happy with the performance have it, LOL). Specs and graphs from people WITH or WITHOUT FPS ISSUES would be very helpful in my “study”. If we can’t figure it out at least if that thread keeps going it gets bumped up for Codies to notice.

    Thanks!

  • Markuz

I have Vista but I’ve seen people on Codies’ forums with Win7 but are still unhappy with the game’s performance. Previously I was using my onboard audio then I switched to my old Creative Audigy 4 since that works well and faster with OpenAL (since it has audio hardware acceleration). Since the “Software” audio setting uses OpenAL for this game I tried it out. I think performance went up a tiny bit but it’s still lowish even on the ugly Ultra Low.

I posted something on the top of this page, perhaps you can help in the thread I posted. Thanks!

  • Markuz

I think Helios just got back after being relieved by Caldera.

  • glenn

ill run fraps next time i play while playing to watch my fps.  also i do play in 1900x ? in window mode. maybe window mode help fps ?im not sure.

  • Markuz

Yup, windowed mode helps in the FPS (around 9 FPS boost) but it’s kinda hard driving with the viewport as small as that, hahaha. It’s like G25ing on a PSP.

  • Markuz

Did this. No effect. Next time I’ll try +pleasePatch.
