After the cancellation of the planned development blog, Codemasters has now released the first bit of preview material of their upcoming Formula One 2009 title for the PC and gaming consoles.
The screenshot shows laser-scanned point cloud data from an unknown circuit, most likely Spa Francorchamps. F1 2009 will include all cars and tracks of the 2009 Formula One season including the brand new Abu Dhabi Yas Marina circuit that will host the 2009 season finale.
F1 2009 is the first official Formula One game to be made by Codemasters after Sony’s loss of the F1 license. Even though the company does not have a very impressive record with simulations, Codemasters has promised a game that will be appealing to all kinds of racing fans, from arcade lovers to sim racers.

Yeah, definitely looks like Spa. Run down to Pouhon I think.
One would hope the graphics improve between now and the release.

Probably we won’t have a full simulation, but I’m really happy with this news: it’s good to see that they are trying to create realistic circuits with laser scan technology! At least this should satisfy who is still looking for more european track in iR.^^

It is spa…confirmed by the dev.

If they put such an effort in making accurate Tracks it would be Nonsense not to make accurate physics too imo.
So I force myself to be optimistic, even if Codemasters used to disapoint me in the past.

Laser scanning eh? That’s very encouraging. Pretty much in agreement with 6e66o on that one.

yep totally agree with 6e66o, they definately need to focus more on the simulated side, people get over arcade type driving really quick and i for one wouldn’t even bother with it if it’s not simulated

I’d guess they’ll probably go down the GT/Forza path – not totally hardcore but certainly not arcade either. In any case, a laser scanned Spa is drool worthy

I doubt Codies will ever make anything that can be called a sim, but at least we’ll have accurate tracks to convert to other sims :P
But seriously, I don’t expect a sim from Codies. And everyone should also know this from past Codie products. I was a big fan of Toca 1 & 2 and Colin McRae 3 (I think), and I still remember them fondly. However, I’m not completely condemning them to “fail” aka do a useless arcade piece.

I thing 6e66o has a point.
Realistic tracks are notthing with out realistic physics.
I realy hope it wil be a good sim, the older F1 games on the pc where great,(from EA) time for a come back!!
