F1 1982 for rFactor – First Preview

Lula K is working on bringing one of the missing 80s seasons of Formula One racing to rFactor by announcing his F1 1982 mod.

Based on Pedros 1982 mod for Grand Prix 4, his mod will be made in collaboration with BlackMagic and will feature scratch-made physics to bring this exciting era of F1 racing to the simulation. Below is a first preview, showing the two turbo-powered Renault cars in action.

1982 was a troublesome year for Formula One as both Gilles Villeneuve and Ricardo Paletti died during the course of the season. 1982 also saw the debut of mighty turbo engines and ground effect cars as Renault, Ferrari and Toleman made first use of the new technology. Williams driver Keke Rosberg clinched the series title while the Scuderia Ferrari ended up victorious in the constructors championship.

    Just for the record:
    “12. JUN UPDATE:
    * The F1Seventies crew joined us to make new cockpits and oter graphic work. in exchange we’ll help them finish their f1 89 physics. ”

There are also 2 more screens. Anyway it looks great! I’m happy that another exciting F1 season is making it’s way to rFactor.

I’ve been visiting this site for a long time, and I love it, but haven’t signed up until now.

    Looks nice so far.

I need to correct you on one thing; 1982 was not the debut year for turbo engines and ground effects. 1977 was that year, Renault was first with turbos, Lotus was first with ground effects. Ferrari first used its turbo in 1981 and Toleman in 1981 too. All team had adopted ground effect technology by 1979.

    This is good news!

And if they better the model a bit but, basically, if they avoid the strange physics or tyre models like in the 1985 or the 1988 F1 mods, we may be for a real treat, at least the classic F1 mod I can believe in since Renato’s 1979.

I since I mention Renato’s work, they could lay an eye on how his F11979 mod simulates ground-effects. 1982 was the last ground-effect season and the feeling of it would be priceless.

Too bad rFactor can’t handle turbo lag, that would be necessary for this… but F11985 isn’t already too bad in that department, if these modders did anything like it, it would already be ok

A challenge these guys may have could be in allowing only the Brabhams to refuel

The story of refuelling in 1982 can be seen in a nice video, that also shows how coll these things must have been to drive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ0Hq_WIRAQ ! That was the F1 that turned me into a motorsport fan

I’m hoping the modders are will make sure to fix the car classes so that it’s league friendly. So many mods gets released where each type of car is it’s own class and as a result, not usable in some leagues that use automated scoring.

Look at GP79 or F1 1975 for an example of how not do it. Otherwise great mods – the models and physics are a joy, but each car is recorded in it’s own class so you can have multiple 1st place finishers.
