Electronic Arts Ditches NASCAR Franchise

According to Gamespot.com, Electronic Arts has announced that no more titles in their series of NASCAR racing games are planned. Starting with NASCAR 98, EA had released twelve NASCAR games, the last of which was released in June 2008.

Even though NASCAR 09 received quite favorable reviews, the title did not sell very well despite NASCAR’s huge popularity in the United States.

The end of EA’s NASCAR activities does end virtual stock car racing though as NASCAR has recently closed two important deals that will bring NASCAR style racing to both sim racers and casual gamers. While iRacing.com will be running an officially sanctioned NASCAR online league in 2010, the Sprint Cup Series will also make an appearance in Gran Turismo 5 for the Playstation 3, including several licensed NASCAR tracks.

Hypothetically speaking, iRacing should take over the license. Create a standalone game based on the iRacing engine and it’d sell like hot cakes
