DIY Steering Wheel On The Cheap – Video

I´ve already showcased several self-made wheels here on VirtualR, often high-tech creations made of expensive materials and equipped with sophisticated electronics.

Since such hardware is out of reach for most sim racers, some chaps from Brazil have come up with a much cheaper way to build your own wheel as you can see below.

While the force feedback effects of their creation look rather weak, the wheel seems to be remarkably silent and there are no driver issues on the horizon either…

    Some 20 odd years ago, I recall seeing a steering wheel at Radio Shack for real cheap.  The way it worked was that you attached your mouse too it, and turning the wheel moved a platform beneath the stationary mouse.

    I think I remember seeing one where you just had a small wheel in your hand (no wires) which you rested on the keyboard and as you turned (rolled) it, it pressed the assigned keys for steer.
    So sad.  

    Its amazing to see what people will come up with when needs must be met :)
    That video above is something I`d expect from The Flintstones :)

    LOL, I used to have a ‘joystick’ which was clipped to the cursor arrows and as I moved the ‘analog’ stick, the mechanism was pressing the keys. It was useless just like this  :)

    Going to show my age! Formula one simulator by Mastertronic on the spectrum had an alternative keyboard layout. You could assign the number keys as steering keys. 5 being centre and 1 being sharp left and 0 being sharp right with the other keys inbetween doing smaller amounts of steering. It suggested in the instructions that you rolled a roll of celotape across the keys!!! :)

    U have to be very very very poor to make this kind of steering wheel. Too poor even to even own a PC. Cheap steeringwheels are like € 5,- second hand.

    Whilst I thoroughly enjoy the ingenuity of this creation and watching it used…

    I’ll stick to my G25 :) . Gonna upgrade to the GT2 here sometime… I wonder if this guy would sell me his contraption for less hehe.

    I can vaguely remember something about those key setups for fast turns when I had my Spectrum.
    The cellotape advice is classic ! :)
