Dan Wheldon, reigning champion of the legendary Indy 500, has been killed in a massive 15-car crash at today’s Indycar season finale at Las Vegas.

The Englishman recently devoted his services to SimRaceWay, trying to make their upcoming racing title more realistic by spreading some of his knowledge and experience on the virtual racing community.

Wheldon was a twice time winner of the legendary Indy 500, a two-time IRL Champion and winner of the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona. Great champions are always meant to be remembered for their brightest hours, so here’s the stunning finish of this year’s Indy 500 that Dan won despite driving an underfunded car for Bryan Herta Autosport.

Rest in peace!

Terrible crash and what a sad sad end to the season.
It was heartbreaking to read that he left behind not only his wife but 2 boys of 2yrs old and 7 months old.   🙁

    RIP Dan Wheldon.

I have been a devoted follower of Indy the last few years and had really grown to like Wheldon. He was a great driver and I can remember many times this season wondering why he didnt have a ride as he was better than a good amount of the current drivers. He was fun to listen to in the commentary booth though and had a great personality and love for racing. As a grown man it takes a lot to choke me up but this is just terrible and really makes me take a look around at whats important in life. You can be gone in an instant. RIP Dan

I just watched the footage, the speed those Indy cars go. Some of them were just picked up and thrown against a wall like toys.

RIP Dan, and my wishes to anybody else who was injured.

As a native of St. Petersburg, it was great knowing we had such a great man and racer as part of our town. I don’t think the sport will be the same with out him, and neither will our town. If anything comes out of this horrible event, I do hope Indycar will one day find a way to finally offer drivers some real protection, especially if they insist on racing on ovals. I never want to have to learn of losing another soul, especially one like Dan.

    r.i.p. dan

condolences to his wife, kids, family and friends

God expanded his race team today… I trust Dan and Dale are serving the heavenly racing circuit well.

I was never a big fan of Dan Weldon, I was critical of some of his comments and actions over the years. But never in my life would I have wanted something like this.

He died doing what he loved to do though, and that’s something not many people are lucky enough to have happen to them. We should all wish to be so lucky, to die experiencing our true passion. God speed, Dan. You are missed, have fun up there with Dale.

R.I.P. Dan Wheldon! You were a great champion.

This is the saddest part of autosport. But we can be happy for him that he died doing what he most liked – RACING.

Accident waiting to happen sadly, what a waste of a life, Dario said everyone was driving crazy, to many cars going to fast on a tiny track for a huge $5,000,000 pay day, attracting rookies , no wonder Jody Scheckter wants his son to get out  of the modern day gladiator arenas, the track is safe for Nascar not Indycar !

shame most people from UK not into motor-sport didn’t know who he was until he died.

    RIP Dan…Green forever !
