Here’s a quick tip for everyone who enjoys the World Sportscar 1970 mod for rFactor that was released by CSGT yesterday.
While the mod is widely praised for its challenging physics and great sounds, the graphics are a common complaint. They can be helped alot though as RSC user Riches has combined the mod with 6e66o’s cubemaps for rFactor. The new cubemaps have a rather stunning effect on the cars as you can see below, improving the matt-looking paintjobs a lot.
Follow the link below to download the new cubemaps, all you have to do is drop them into the CSGT vehicles folder

I think that’s a little too much in the screenshots–too showroom floor. Are there alternate levels of shininess available?

want the reflections less shiny?
make the alpha channel of the skins or the specular map (depending on the mod) darker.
Or try the “less shiny” cubes.

I don’t think that makes them look better, or rather, “realistic”, since most of these cars had fiberglass bodywork that wasn’t shiny at all, but some may like it.

just a few examples of reflections:

…
of course in reality lighting and reflections are way more complex and that cannot be achieved perfectly with a static cubemap in a game.
Nevertheless it still looks better imo,
but then again everyone has to decide for himself.

I took the screenshots from their most beatifull and reflective angle.
During driving at the normal angle (much lower) they look not that extremely shiny at all.
But it gives them quite a bit more shape.
By the way; viberglass is a thick layer of epoxy covered with viberglass cloths (inside out), wich is very well suited for high gloss finish. Even without any paint on.
Just depends how smooth the countermold is.
Anyhow, when you are not happy with the result, just remove the dds file again or play with the alpha channel, like 6e66o mentioned.
(Great work 6e66o, i think your cubemap is spot on!)

Is there a version that will work with DX8? I run this mode to increase FPS….

Make a copy of the file and name it: CAR_CUBE.DDS
Place in the Vehicles\CSGT folder
Now it works for dx8 and dx9
