Codemasters Working on GRID 2

Back in January, first rumors surfaced that Codemasters could be working on a sequel to their Race Driver GRID title that was released back in 2008.

Now, the studio has officially confirmed to be working on GRID 2 according to the Official Xbox Magazine UK. The magazine reports that Codemasters have confirmed to be actively working on GRID 2, the title is planned to be released after F1 2012 hits the shelves this September.

Aside from the confirmation that the studio is working on it, not much else is known about GRID 2. The first GRID offered a wide range of racing machinery and a quite extensive career mode. The title put an emphasis on a highly-detailed damage model that provided spectacular crashes, the handling model failed to impress sim racers looking for a realistic driving experience though.

This is going to be fun is my guess. Sometimes you just have to have a bit of fun and I still consider GRID one of the best arcade racers of them all. Seemed like the feel of the cars and the fun was much greater to what for example Shift 2 offered :) . It’s just my opinion though, and sometimes I just need a bit of that fun, arcade stuff for a break from serious simming. Oh and if anyone thinks this is going to be a sim, I’d say here that this 99% chance is going to be arcade title so don’t get your hopes up :P

I really enjoyed Grid on the xbox, best bit was the demolition derby :)

Not interested in any of the Codemasters’ games anymore. Purchased GRID only to get the “GRID.exe stopped working” message which they don’t bother fixing. As far as F1 games are concerned, I cannot get my G25 match the in-game wheel which stops me from even continuing to play it. Yes, some say I’m quite picky…

I had a lot of fun with the first one, really looking forward to this one (I wonder why it took them so long).

One thing I know it’s never gonna happen but really wish it did is the addition of pre-race practice sessions and qualification stages. It was so annoying to simply start driving a completely new car in a fictional stage that I dont know at the back of a full grid and have nothing but 2 laps to get to the first place. It was doable, and the AI was fairly easy even on the very hard, but it required anything but finese.
Also, I really hope the drifting scoring system is not as horribly broken and exploitable as it was on the first game, beating a score of 250k with 5 million was fun the first few times but then it was just sad.

As a console game, GRID ticked almost all the right boxes- the racing is exciting (although there’s no denying that rubber-band AI comes into play), great variety of racing- everything from Formula racing to Touge and even Destruction Derby, brilliant use of custom liveries (you actually get paid from sponsorship decals), great crash modelling, great fantasy track (cobblestoned Rome) etc.

But it’s also worst at simulating even a decent driving physics, the crudest FFB and the worst depiction of real world track (Le Mans and Spa were atrocious).  It’s a great escape from reality and somehow I expect this one to be quite similar (well, maybe the tracks will improve now that CM has some decent ones from F1).  I had fun with the first one although I doubt I’ll be getting this one.

I had a blast with the first GRID, i’s a shame it was ridiculous with a wheel though. If they can reach dirt/F1 levels of realism so it’s fun to play with a wheel I’ll be all over this.

At last! I have high hopes for Grid 2. I see it separately from the CM F1 series which deserves to be ridiculed, unlike Grid, Dirt 1 & Dirt 3 which are very fun and complete games.

Grid 2 should continue to be a full on fast paced keyboard racer imo. Don’t even bother with this stupid “best of sim, best of arcade” nonsense because those games always fail to cater to anyone. Just give me addicting and responsive physics, collisions, gameplay, high frame rates, challenging but non-cheating AI, great tracks (jumps and loops welcome) and amazing sounds for all the cars please.

great post, if grid 2 keeps all the good things of grid 1 and add decent ffb we have a winner (on ps3)

About damn time.  I had so much fun playing the first Grid especially drifting.

Yes Grid drifting is real fun!

I’ve grown to a great iRacing career getting into the 5k iRating and over 30% wins but Grid days were the most fun I had with any racing title!

Keybord racer – seriously? Space should be the jump button.

i have to agree, even though with a wheel the CM games are no good at all they were just so fun, as a mass market racing game i thought grid was exeptional, i even bought it twice before i got my G25. i may even but Grid two just to enjoy it with a gamepad

  • Philip Samuelson

Good! Although I’m a hardcore sim racer, I like a break from time to time, and GRID was very entertaining and a nice break from the sim-norm.

I have played GRID for a very long time, both off as online. It might have been unrealistic as hell, but it was a really fun game to play. I was always looking forward to GRID2 and thought it would never come, but with the crap Codies puts out every time and invest more money in PR than game development I am not that interested in GRID2. It’s probably going to be a bug fest once again with gameplay that is interesting for an hour.

Hope they really build on GRID though. The gameplay was really exciting, te tracks were really fun and challenging. I can still remember being able to take turns at full speed, but if you drove at them wrong you would slam in the tire wall. With the movable tires and crash physics that always was really cool to do so.

Even if they keep the gameplay the same, which I didn’t like (I thought Virtua Racer had much better arcade style play) they absolutely have to kill the rubberband AI… that’s the cheapest and most lousy bunch of BS to ever put in a racing game of any variety.

Great arcade racer, had tons of fun with it. Codies knows how to deliver a fun and exciting arcade experience. looking foward for the sequel.

I disagree, Like SHIFT2 I think GRID will be aiming for the GT/Forza fanbase.

  • Emiko Yamamoto

I just hope they bring the old TOCA Race Driver-feeling back. I barely played the first GRID because of the arcade-ish system. So I hope they can work on GRID 2 to be a simulator instead.

They should reclaim the the title “The Ultimate Racing Simulator”…
