Here’s a really clever idea for sim racers who can’t bother their family with all their sim gear standing around or who have trouble racing in peace without getting distracted by wife or kids.
GTPlanet user GTP_joeninety has build himself a closed racing pod made of MDF, giving him a comfortable and cozy place to race in. The box is fully equipped with screen, gaming consoles, steering wheel, racing seat and proper ventilation.
The pod sits on wheels and can be moved around as it fits though doors, the only downside is that Joe will never be able to install a jDome in this ;)

Hahaha! Fantastic! Sim racers are crazy, and its awesome. Btw, I noticed some stains on the seat there, maybe he also uses it for private viewings of a delicate nature?

Its not the prettiest of sims, but I do like the idea of having a roof over your head. It probably enhances the immersion even more, like when you’re sitting in a real car.

It could do with a little hatchway for biscuits, cups of tea, etc. to be passed through during pit stops.
On a more constructive note, it may be the most ridiculous looking thing to have in a living room, but who out of us wouldn’t want to have a go on it if we saw it?

I built something similar to this a few years ago. It was hot as hell and really hard on the electronic equipment. I kinda cool for awhile, but it was really inconvenient to get in and out of and just too hot. I eventually opted for a more open cockpit. http://www.obutto.com

Great, now you just need another box to hide this ugly box in it ;-p

It looks like a big ugly box of a helmet that is bigger than the single-seater being driven. If it’s well-soundproofed it might serve a purpose, assuming the rest of the family co-occupies the room it’s in while it’s being used.
More seriously, that’s a great effort to “encapsulate” the sim racing experience, and I’m sure it took a lot of work to design and build. While the basic idea is admirable, I think I’ll go with gaming headphones and some extra screens for wrap-around vision first, and just tell the family to ignore me while I’m doing it.

The biggest distraction when you’re playing a game is, of course, someone asking you a question when you’re on a hot lap. Second to that is someone just standing and watching over your shoulder, or possibly a cat jumping onto your lap. It doesn’t take much to put you off, and it takes a gamer to understand the need for respectful silence!
I understand why this box was built. Sims always demand a little spatial dedication. Whilst Sony and Nintendo are desperate to plant themselves in the centre of the living room, sims are increasingly tempting us to give over the box room/cellar/loft, etc.
