Deano: Looks outstanding to me.
Tom, if there’s a Can Am mod out there already, I haven’t seen it yet. And I believe I’ve got every mod that currently out for rFactor.

Well, you don't have this one ;) Tom is right. CanAm 2.0 and still developing Great mod!

aj_1986:
Looks quality, but why are they bothering with a decade-plus-old platform when so many recent titles would do just as well, would look and run better, and would make the mod more accessible to more people?

Well, the best racing simulation I ever have owned is GPL and it is still on my system today, right beside rFactor, GTR2, LFS, Race07, iRacing, and a few others. It just does not get used as much any more, but is still the pick of the litter in many ways. How would you like to drive the full length of the Isle of Man road course or the Targa Florio? They are coming soon and won't be legitimately found for a long time on newer sims.

GPL in many ways is still the best simulation available for pre-1975 open wheel racing. The online code is about the best out there even today and the current AI drivers are very much like their real prototypes (Clark, Surtees, etc.). The eye candy is not up to current technology, but the physics are exceptional, and when you are racing in GPL the immersion factor is hugely greater than most newer sims. Driver aids and HUD information are very limited - GPL was designed to be a simulation, not just a game, and the cars of that era did not have telemetry or computerized metering on board.

Most current sims like rFactor, GTR2, Race07, etc., were aimed at mass markets with simulation a secondary consideration (they are still very good and immensely moddable, especially for tintop racing).

This project was conceived by GPL fans specifically for GPL, not for the mass market. Most of the guys working on the project are active with newer sims as well.

There are a zillion sports car mods for rFactor and GTR2 today, and perhaps someone who really wants the Can-Am cars in one of those platforms will come along and build the mod.

Until then, you can use GPL for this mod if you want it - the cost is mostly around $15 USD via eBay, it's compatible with nearly all old and new hardware, and it has a low impact on your hard drive space. Also, it starts up in just a few seconds rather than the long waits we get in some of the newer sims.

Probably enabling the anti-alliasing would help  .

BTW if you people didn't know, 60fps has been released for GPL some time ago

Isn't there allready a really progressed mod of an early 70's CanAm season floating around the internet for rFactor?

Nonetheless, this looks stunning. Gotta love those classic cars!
