C.A.R.S. – New Build for All Members Launched

Slightly Mad Studios have launched a new development build of their C.A.R.S. title that was launched just three days ago.

The new build comes with a variety of fixes that have been reported by on their WMD site, including support for Thrustmasters’ new T500 RS wheel and plenty of little graphic fixes.

Most importantly, the new build expands the pre-alpha version’s feature list by adding a basic AI, allowing players to do single-class races against up to 15 opponents. Furthermore, trackside cameras are now enabled, giving team members the chance to see the cars in action.

Last but not least, the new build also adds an all-new track as the fictional Test Track is now available. The Test Track gives players the chance to try the machinery in C.A.R.S. in various settings, coming with a high-speed oval, a skidpad, a dragstrip, a hillclimb-course and much more.

Below are four previews of the test track for those who aren’t part of C.A.R.S. yet. Team Members can now download the build on the WMD forum regardless of membership status as the new build is available to all members in celebration of the successful launch. More info can be found on the WMD website.

Great update !  Im hoping my steering will improve on this one too.
    Grabbing now…

  • Ricoo

Impressive for an alpha. Great graphics. Run not so bad at max settings 1600×1200 with my GTX275.

    Very fun and nice driving.

In the right direction to be become a great sim.

  • Ernie

SMS has removed the gamepad input filter and now i have much better wheel steering. More direct steering input without any lag. Seems like this gamepad filter was the cause for this “NFSShift-like” feeling in build 71. Now it’s gone.
Great step forward with this build. 8-)

  • sandboxgod

Yeah I’m installing it right now. Funny my t500rs worked with the old build just fine. But I had to select the logitech wheel profile. So hopefully this new build will have a t500rs specific profile.

  • rusty

i’m guessing the lack of comments here is because everyone is off playing it lol

and if you aint, you should :)

big improvement over b71 even if you just consider the improved steering response and the improvement to eyefinity performance

its crazy to think what we might end up with soon lol

  • Ross Siggers

Steering response is a little better for me without the pad code, but still not the best. Good too see it’s very high on their priorities though :)

  • Ricoo

Strange some people feel input lag in C.A.R.S and say there is also input lag in Shift 2. I never had this problem. And I play also regularly GSC, nKPro, Race On, LFS, … I don’t see any difference on input lag with my G25. I don’t use Logitech profiler but windows default driver. Maybe that’s the reason!?

  • GTEvo

Using Gamepads or any other Controller is the biggest Bullshit of the World.
    I never understood those “idiotical”driving.

But the best is when Gamepad User want to tell us something about Bad Physics etc..then im always break together 8-)
Someone who use a Pad to drive Car, is not Simracer and will never understand what a Simulator is, what a Simulator want and what a Simulator is doing.
They just dont understand the Sense of Simulations.

  • Ross Siggers

There are some cases of Logitech wheels getting lag but it seems to be confined to other brands mostly. On NoGrip I keep banging on about Shift 2. I got zero input lag with my old G25, but then I got a GT3rs and the lag is massive. Same engine, same lag.

  • shum94

Maybe some wait rF2 to buy the best, the newest wheel.

  • Dave Hodsoll

Jaques Villeneuve uses an xbox 360 pad to race as does Anthony Davidson and apparently they have a little knowledge about racing so I’m told, they are also reported to be pretty good with them too, I’d listen to their opinions on simulators and sims.

  • Rolands Svētiņš

Sandbox to have fun for racers. The piece which always is not included in different sims, which actually needs it. I really hope, that this project will turn out into massive perfection in all point of views.

  • F1Racer

“Furthermore, trackside cameras are now enabled, giving team members the chance to see the cars in action.”

Anyone figured out how to do this ?

  • rusty

    Ctrl+T worked for me

  • djotefsoup

For me the biggest wow of the day was actually buried in a post of Ian’s down in the vehicle forums – they are also modelling complete mechanical details in the interiors, and the setup screen is going to look like this:

    http://i51.tinypic.com/334jczt.jpg

    Wow?

  • kuato

    very cool

  • GT3_RSR

    This is madness!  =-O

I think it’s clear SMS will strive for maximum realism in every area. This game looks like what rF2 should have been. Modern sim finally using MODERN technology. I am already saving for a new rig.

  • Silly(c)One

Yeah, now they’re showing off ;)

  • Ricoo

    Indeed impressive. :)

  • Rhys Gardiner

I do remember reading an article about iRacing in which Villeneuve said that he doesn’t like using steering wheels even in real cars!

  • miklay.gabor

why on earth would someone play a sim on gamepads?

it is like playing bad physics.

    makes no sense.

  • Silly(c)One

Why do you guys feel the need to judge all the time ?
What if some people like to play with a gamepad… How is that YOUR problem ? How are YOU superior because you drive with a wheel ? To each his own… Stop trying to format everybody so that we all look alike… You guys are unique… just like everyone else.

    Djeeez…

  • Silly(c)One

The texture bug with DX11 is gone in this build, yay :)

  • Der_KHAN

    not for me

  • Markus Ott

    LMAO.
I played the Endurance Series mod in a league with KEYBOARD.
Time tim come down from the high horse. As if 99,9% of people around here with a wheel could judge the realism of the physics. They are all little Schumachers and Sennas, and when they judge iRacings and rFactors car behaviour as realistic it tells enough of their knowledge.

  • Ariel Pierzchalski

Does someone know is this game will be a hardcore sim, or it will be like gran turismo 5 or nfss2?

i hope it to be a hardcore sim

  • Ricoo

Since members will have the right to choose the important features for the title, we can’t be sure, but SMS clearly said they wanted to make a sim with C.A.R.S.

Here you can watch that they say their competitors are iRacing, GTR2, FM4 and GT5:

    http://wmdportal.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/WMD_Overview_1011.pdf

  • DeDios

yeah, i hope too. I hope will be a great hardcore sim!

  • Silly(c)One

    I’m running a Radeon HD 6970 on an i5 2500K @ 4.5GHz + 8GB RAM, on Windows 7 x64 SP1, what’s your config ?

  • Nathan Robinson

If you do CTRL+I during a race or practice, the A.I will take over your car. Then do the CTRL+T to watch the A.I. race against each other in tv style :)

  • kevmscotland

Not for me either. But its a alpha, so not bothered by it!

  • GTEvo

Yes..a “Hardcore Sim”, ‘ its made for Pad Users too 8-)

For me “Hardcore Sim” is a Game only programmed around Wheels.
No Pad, No Keyboard, No Joystick Inputs!

*Crashing against tires barriers… When crashing against it, please! don’t make those tires feel like concrete walls and make them feel more like real tires   Example: http://assets.speedtv.com/images/article_assets/103/1036549/1036549_article_img_large2.jpg   * Engineer Mode & Team director mode…  When forming a team I could be in the race acting as a team spotter or race engineer who sits in a track-side telemetry station being able to see everything from that spot like it was a cockpit such as car telemetry, position spots, whether cast, race… Always trying to enrich the team experience when making leagues, tournaments etc..  Example: http://cdn.asia.cnet.com/i/r/2008/pg/62046598/sc016.jpg   *Team Radio..  From the track-side telemetry stations where the spotters would be they will contact their drivers with team radios with real in-game background noise.   Example:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX0U8VsxqV8   *Real pit experience such as free-view around pits garage and full pit madness when coming for a pit stop. Also you know when you don’t request a pit stop in rf and you just coming to pits and pit crew just show up and are ready, well don’t make it like this many    Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=mg9E9x3rEMA   *animated Safety Marshals   *Podium victories with driver celebration and for this will be ideal to be able to create your own characters face.    *Realistic damage… We know how fragile racing cars are so make the best damage simulation out there.   *Dry line when rain. Example: rfactor2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLH_8PxiD5E     As ideas come along I will keep them posting

  • マリオ クリストファ

Hi, first of all I would like to thank SMS for such an amazing sim.   Here is my feedback an opinion… I love this game!  Even though im having a blast I would like to say that the physics can be improved, I just dont want to have that sence of arcade as so ever, not even a little bit… I want the most simulation you can give because at the end, the game as it is is no made for just any racing game fan but for harcore sim acer, for those with a pc wheel and sim racing experience.    Things I would like to see   *In car button interaction.. Meaning, being able to use and see moving the dials in the car.  Example: Netkar Pro   * Tire degradation… Make tire shines when you first start but while racing let us be able to see wearing out.  Example: rFactor2   *Real Clutch feeling.. as you know in real life you can’t drive a manual vehicle if you don’t use the clutch properly, but in every simracing game that I had played the clutch (in automatic clutch off) is not necessary to switch gears.   Example: rFactor, your Games, Live4Speed, etc..   *Safety car..   Example: rFactor

  • Riches

You should write these comment on their forum.
    That where the developers look.
Here you write it to your fellow simmers.
We can’t do anything with your advice.

  • logos

It’ll be entirely a PC game, that eventually will be ported to consoles if the members decide this.

  • F1Racer

    Great, thanks guys !

  • Vedster

as long as they develop it for PC on PC, and on consoles for consoles.
This will only make it better as consoles will bring money which then can be used to perfect the sim on all platforms

  • StarFoXySxv550

Who would of thought a user with a name like silly (c) one would be the person to post the most sense around here.

Mock the pad users as much as you want now, but when those same mocked pad and console players are propping up this sim to reach the projected profits we’ll see what stupid pictures are posted after.

  • Nathan Robinson

i consider rfactor a hardcore sim and i have raced that with a gamepad in the past.

  • Ricoo

For me porting it to consoles would be a good thing. To compete with FM and GT it should be very good, and this would be a good thing even for PC.

  • Captain Underpants

Well, I reckon the best sims give you the options to be able to play it however you like – any control scheme/interface, adjustable FOV, able to turn off the in-car wheel, scalable graphics settings, permits head-tracking. You know, like rFactor and GTR Evolution does. People talking about how a ‘hardcore sim’ can only be this or only be that are just bigoted. It’s people like that having a say in the development of C.A.R.S. that are the biggest concern for me. They usually also have the loudest voices.

  • Captain Underpants

LOL. Grow up. This can only be good for simracing. If Forza and Gran Turismo were cross platform and on the PC, I’d be all over them. I just love driving games, and the more there are, and the more people playing them, the better.

  • Riches

Why did you post that picture of your nude mom on this site?
    There could be children looking!
    :-P

  • Riches

I estimate there are about 10.000 hardcore simmers in the world.
Let’s say they all bought a license for € 25,-.
That’s 250.000 euro, just enough to pay the bill at the SMS office.
So i don’t think it will be a hardcore sim.
But racing against AI on hard yesterday still felt quite hardcore.

  • Ricoo

Your figures are too low, they are 30 000 on iRacing and 66 000 on RaceRoom, if we had all the true simracers reading this blog, it makes easily 100 000 lol

  • Silly(c)One

I never take myself seriously, so should no one ;)

Especially when discussing… GAMES, and half the world is in the streets !

  • Andrew McP

In which case iRacing isn’t a hardcore sim, because they are quite happy encouraging controller users now. Not that they can do anything to discourage controllers, even if they could afford to alienate those customers.

  • Big Ron

    @Ricoo
Maybe there are 100000, but not everyone will buy CARS. So there will be less than 100000 hardcore simmers buying CARS ;)

  • Big Ron

How can you say, that the game as it is is not made for just any racing game fan but for harcore sim racer?

As the community decides, how much hardcore realism there will be and as SMS needs to sell the game to pay bills, you could expect not to get the most harcore super dupa racing sim.

It just needs to be a cool and intense racing game with nice physics.

  • Hobbs77

     Big Ron, I agree!

  • Ricoo

    SMS target 1 000 000 sales not 100 000 anyway. 8-)

  • Ricoo

It needs realistic physics with helps for casual racers. Very easy to do. A sim can appeal to both hardcore and casual with that.

  • Big Ron

Yeah, but to get this target happen, they can´t just focus on hardcore sim racers like iRacing.

  • Ed Luna aka eddiespag

A bit off the subject gentleman, and ladies (hopefully :* ), but something for all of you to weigh in on whose opinions and perspectives I enjoy hearing.  How much of SMS’s C.A.R.S. philosophy of releasing a work in progress to be tested, worked on and driven by the sim racing community’s ‘investors’ will motivate and put at ease ISI to finally release rFactor2 in not a fully polished completed state as a Beta?

Secondly, and more importantly is do any of you think that it is a concern for rFactor2, and us (for rF2 growth) that SMS’s brilliant idea to stimulate and excite a modder and modding groups by offering them good and proper compensation for their work and creations?  Will this not obviously motivate these passionate teams to focus a bit more in a direction/platform where something tangible (rewards of some sort on top of thank you’s) is given in return for their efforts?  What do all of you  think?

These two questions have been my ‘elephant’ in the room lately.  Thank you all.

  • Ricoo

Modders can’t be paid for their work since they don’t pay for licences.

So rFactor 2 will be the plateform for mods, and they will remain free.

C.A.R.S will be a Free to Play with quality additional contents developped by SMS and offered for a small fee.

  • Ricoo

Of course that would be crazy and that is not their aim. But it is possible to appeal to all with a good sim with helps for casuals. They plan dedicated servers like for GTR2 for online, so we can imagine servers with helps and others without. Fun for all. :)

  • Nathan Robinson

As they say, “money talks” :)

  • StarFoXySxv550

These are games? Say it aint so, say it ain’t so? lol
I refer to them as pixels.

If you don’t want to be taken seriously silly I suggest you stop posting totally rational, logical, feasible and tangible arguments. I mean come on, this is a forum, what gives you that right? Last time I heard, that was an imprisonable offense.. enforced by NATO & the UN no less :-P

  • StarFoXySxv550

I urge the C.A.R.S community to vote for this game to also release on consoles.

My favourite console games (Forza & GT) need some competition to push them in the right direction (when I say “right direction”, I really mean “my way” of ideal playing ) ;) it seems like C.A.R.S has some cool modes and features I’d like to see across the range of this genre of games. Obviously the developers have thier own visions of where their franchise should end up, but there’s nothing like a healthy nudge and wink in helping them widen that vision. We already know they all pay close attention to what each other are doing, at least the Europeans and American companies in this small genre do.

*Awaits the Console hate comments lol

  • Jos

it will get released for the consoles, even that pos wii will get a version……

hopefully wont hurt the pc version too much…….

  • Oli

I agree with Ricoo! C.A.R.S. should aim towards implementing realistic sim physics with additional aids for casual drivers!

  • StarFoXySxv550

The Wii is HD now with the Wii U. I hear it’s the First console to output 1080p?

Anyway, so long as they develop for PC then work backwards all should be well. It’s tiring to keep hearing “The consoles held us back” being cried by developers. That’s just an excuse to be lazy by cutting dev costs and time. Funny, they never port the crappy Wii graphics to HD consoles or PC then claim the Wii held them back. It’s only because the PC market is relatively small they can get away with that talk. I just hope they give consoles PC-like assist-free steering wheel support, well Xbox and PS3, Wii or Wii U is not my thing.
