Autosport Tries Toyota’s F1 Simulator – Article + Videos

Autosport magazine has recently been given the chance to test drive Toyota’s state of the art Formula One simulator in the company’s Cologne factory.

The high-tech simulator unit was part of Toyota’s quest to capture their first Formula One victory, an effort that was ended after the 2009. Even though Toytoa has pulled out of Formula One, the facility is still in full swing as Toyota is looking to rent out the simulator, the software is currently adapted to allow simulation of various vehicles such as lower-division Formula cars and GT cars.

Below are several videos of the simulator in action, Autosport has written a very extensive article about the experience, including interviews with former Toyota F1 drivers Timo Glock and Kamui Kobayashi.

I bet this isnt as good as iRacing, iRacing is the real deal………………. ;)

  • Justin ForzaBarça D’Cruze

Yeah but then again, iracing is more realistic than real life……

  • Justin ForzaBarça D’Cruze

    I want one.
    Maybe next christmas ><

  • mike88

    great arctile

third video is hillarious he can barely keep it on track probably due to the physical forces required.

what an awesome job Ben Anderson has or for any journalist involved in formula 1.

  • rci808

i-racing shhould cost way more money to be similar to real life  :P

    Here we go again.. -1

  • Peter

That’s why no one is using it as a professionnal simulator.

  • GT5osom

in F1 most ov the teams r noobs playing rFactor Pro, GT5 is better!!

  • CAR

iRacing has enough advertising as it’s, just enjoy the sodding article!

  • K9.Yoshimura.GP.EVO.1

lol i did enjoy it, i want one!

  • K9.Yoshimura.GP.EVO.1

iRacing has enough advertising as it’s

So what, iRacing is a really good Sim.

  • Bob

It doesn’t matter how real iracing is, the best form of practice is in a real car on a real track. Ask any accomplished driver and they will tell you racing sims are just games. Anyone that tells you different is just a fan of video games.

  • THORNS

You dont know what you are talking about Bob, as Justin said, iRacing is more realistic than life itself!  And OMG did you just call iracing a Game, and not a sim, how dare you!

  • Bob

I know right! Just trying to make some friends here. :-P

  • Dirk

Why do people keep whining about the lack of g-forces? How are you supposed to simulate 5G on a rig that STANDS STILL? It’s a really stupid thing to whine about because it’s obviously not possible to have these forces on something that doesn’t move. Give it up already.

That’s the problem with drivers opinions about simulators. Those who understand what’s actually possible will have realistic expectations and can enjoy and benefit from using a simulator. Drivers who expect a simulator to feel exactly like the real thing will of course be disappointed and then dismiss it without making use of what actually can be simulated. In the end it’s their loss.

Sure noting beats the real thing duh!
I race karts drive in the DRNT & some racesin the Youngtimer trophy, and i do trackdays with my bike..
I only said iR is pretty good aight!

  • Dirk

And what’s with saying “it can’t replace the real thing” (I hear it very often)? I don’t think anyone has suggested that simulators are here to replace driving a real racing car. They are meant for the occassions when you can’t use a real car not for using instead of a real car. I doubt people who design simulators think they should be equal to real racing, simulators are supposed to be the next best thing, the thing you use when you can’t afford/aren’t allowed to go out on a real track.

Stop saying “instead of playing these games go out and drive a real car”. That’s the fucking point of simulators, we don’t have the possibility to drive a real car. I think every sim racer and every real racer who uses a simulator would never ever drive in a sim if they had the possibility to drive an F1 car whenever they wanted.

Don’t whine about simulators being a sub-standard experience, it’s pointless.

  • fprintf

I train in real life to be better at iRacing

  • Bob

Oh sure, iracing is great, I didn’t mean it that way. I was just poking at “iracing is more realistic than real life” which was scarcasm in itself.

  • Dirk

I can’t get enough of expressing myself on this topic :D

Let’s say you’re passionate about skiing. What do you do? You buy yourself skis and go skiing. What if you’re passionate about motorsport? You can watch motorsport on TV or at your local racetrack. What if you want to drive a car fast? Yes there are track days but what if you want to drive a formula car? There are very few people who can afford driving Formula 1 or CART cars at EuroBOSS/BOSS GP. One option would be to use a simulator. It will never be exactly like the real thing but it’s way better than doing nothing. It will not give you the experience of the real car but it will satisfy your passion for motorsport. This is the essence of consumer simulators IMO.

The same thing with real drivers. When the race weekend is over and you want to practice, which is better – sitting on your ass or driving a simulator that is at least physically correct even though it doesn’t provide you with the full experience of the real thing.

Yes, it is a sub-standard experience but that’s all you got. Accept it and enjoy it.

  • moschum

no, it really isn’t, and they’ve fooled everyone including you into thinking it is by marketing it in that way.

the single seater cars in iracing are awful to drive, and kaemmer has admitted as much by developing a whole new tyre model for it with more Grip.

oh yeh sorry, iracing use ACTUAL Williams Data! that means it must be 100% real! its not like software programmers had to translate that data and put it into their own physics engine…..

  • moschum

    what a dumb comment,
99% of people don’t have the money to drive real cars on tracks, thats why there are sim games.
and they are a superb way to learn race tracks, learn lines, develop consistency and understand setup and how it affects the handling.

theres a big difference between the sim games rfactor, iracing, netkar to the video games gt5, forza etc.

    you n00b.

  • Bob

“99% of people don’t have the money to drive real cars on tracks, thats why there are sim games.”

Agreed, that is a dumb comment.

  • IonAphis

they dont mention it anywhere, but that barcelona track sure looks awfully like the rfactor version… I notice, because when I was downloading my F1 tracks, I downloaded like 4 versions of barcelona, and the one thing I noticed changed a lot from track to track was the little house upon one of the hills. But I do remember the version I kept was incredibly similar to the one shown here. Its a good guess Toyota use rFactor Pro, but can it be they´d be using public tracks as well?

  • CAR

“So what, iRacing is a really good Sim.”, “And OMG did you just call iracing a Game, and not a sim, how dare you”.  iR themselves call it a game :P

  • K9.Yoshimura.GP.EVO.1

    lol, ino! :)

  • Justin ForzaBarça D’Cruze

Yeh totally agree, the layout and graphics of the track look totally like rfactor
