Assetto Corsa – Q&As Reveal New Details

Kunos Simuöazioni’s Marco Massarutto has answered plenty of questions on their Assetto Corsa title on two different websites, revealing plenty of interesting new details.

In the interviews with SimNewsDaily & SELOC, Marco touched on several very interesting topics as well as shared his vision for Assetto Corsa in a mission statement that you can find in full below.

Both articles touch on the base features of Assetto Corsa as Marco reveals that the title will not come with a career mode and thus will not have any unlockable content as all cars and tracks will be available for the players from the start.

As outlined in the mission statement, Kunos believes that the single player experience is still massively important which is one of the reasons AC will be Kunos’ first title to come with AI. Nevertheless, Kunos aims on improving the multiplayer experience compared to netKar Pro, multiplayer will stay free as Kunos dosen’t plant to use any kind of subscription system.

The studio has long-term plans for Assetto Corsa as the 1.0 version will just be the start of what’ in store. Aside from content DLCs both free and commercial, Kunos also plans on adding new features to the title that won’t make the cut for the first version. That does include wet weather, a feature that does not fit the time constraints for the first release.

Speaking of the release, Kunos is still gunning to release the first version in late 2012. The team is planing on releasing a technology preview later this year, featuring one car & one track. Not meant to be a traditional demo, the preview will be used to test the new DirectX 11 graphics engine on a variety of systems before releasing the first versions.

Make sure to check out both articles for much more details as well as the mission statement below:

I would like talk a bit about development decisions regarding Assetto Corsa, before answering to some of your questions.

First of all, we really appreciate your comments and we thank you for all your interest in Assetto Corsa. This provides a strong motivation for our team to work at its best. We would also like to thank all the people that continue to support us, and the AC project, by purchasing our existing products. Please, continue to do so.

Reading comments on blogs, forums and your questions here, it seems that people think of us as a big software studio with unlimited resources. We feel proud because it seems that people think we are doing top quality work. Nevertheless we would like to underline that Kunos Simulazioni is a small, independent software house that is not funded by any external investment. We don’t work with, or on behalf of, any financial company and therefore our budget and resources are limited.

Because the community seems to be very kind on our regards, the least we can do is to be honest towards the community. Before discussing features, cars and tracks or how our title will be the “sim to end all sims” as maybe other marketing departments of other software studios do, we would like to explain the reasons behind some decisions, so here it goes.

It’s important to understand what limited resources means. We need to decide very carefully on which aspects of the software we have to focus our production: graphics, physics, licensing, features, the offline and/or online experience, weather effects, and so on. Obviously we can’t put the same attention in all of these aspects together. Gran Turismo 5 is a game that proves that 5 years work and budgets in the range of several tenths of millions of dollars, are not by themselves a guarantee that you can include every feature in existence into a racing game, and create the perfection.

We have a maxim in our office: “everyone wants to race a 24 hour race, driving at night, under heavy rain, with broken suspension and a puncture. But just one time for a try“.

What we have learned, over the years, is that feedback on forums and simracing blogs represents just a minor percentage of the total amount of users and it doesn’t always tell you the truth about what people want to see in a game. We pay great attention and listen to our customers, but when we see how people are using our software, we see various patterns -often vastly different- from what blogs and forums would suggest as normal usage. Here’s a couple of examples that are significative.

As you probably know, Kunos have released, for free, for all registered members – all the add-ons produced for netKar PRO: cars, tracks, features, etc. And a lot of people who didn’t purchase netkar PRO before, during these years decided to buy it to get these add-ons, when a certain car or track as piqued their interest. Well, you would probably be surprised, but the slowest add-on car has sold much-much more copies of the game than the version that introduced weather conditions with aquaplaning, even if that feature was highly demanded from communities and the implementation was not bad at all when it was released, in 2009.

If you are not involved in the simracing community and you read the biggest simracing forums, blogs, and so on, you could think that Grand Prix Legends, Richard Burns Rally and a few other games are the most successful racing games ever. And that -for instance- some modern famous F1 or rally titles are a total sales disaster because people hate them. Well, you already know the truth, don’t you?

Many people think that that the multiplayer and online experience is dramatically important to every racing game. We love online racing too and we participate in various leagues with netKar pro or even other sims occasionally! Still if you count the number of users that play online at any time of the day/week with all the available simulators on the market, and then you also count the sales numbers of all the simulators available, you will notice that the online active users are a tiny fraction of the whole sales, even on purely online dedicated sims. So we’re troubled… where are all these people? Why we can’t see more online active users, than 15-20% of the whole sales of all sims even by the most pessimistic sales projections? Obviously because only a small part of the customers have the time and energy to race online regularly.

For all above reasons, and much more that we haven’t expressed but one can easily imagine, an independent developer needs to determine a strategy, in order to stay alive and be able to produce a new product in a busy marketplace. Our strategy, at Kunos, is not to create what people would ideally like to see in Assetto Corsa, but what Assetto Corsa should include in order to be an enjoyable product that simracers and, why not, normal gamers, would love to use. Because if you think about it, fast driving and racing is fun, so why simulators are not used by more people?

The development of Assetto Corsa is the present and future of our software house and an offer to the simracing community that surely thrives if more simulations are available in the market. We need to give priority to the features that make the driving experience with Assetto Corsa, worth for a larger audience of customers, without compromising and producing an arcade or sim/arcade game. Therefore we need contents, official cars and tracks, hi-quality graphics, a cool entertainment experience and a moddable structure to the software design. All powered by the most realistic physics engine we are able to develop, because that is our trademark and most praised characteristic. We believe that those features will make everybody happy, while having whatever extra feature at the expense of stability or mediocre experience while playing would make probably some people happy and angry everybody else.

So for example, multiplayer? Sure, but it will be one of the features of Assetto Corsa. AC will not have only a multiplayer structure as its core function, like its predecessor. Our original wish list, when we defined the concept of AC more than 2 years ago, included a lot of interesting and cool features. Realistically, today we need to set priorities and give you a great, stable racing experience. We are investing so much, we decided to bet on the simracing community. When AC is released, you will decide whether to bet on us. What will happen after the first release of AC, will also depend on the community stance. If the community stops the religion wars of “my sim is better than yours” and embraces the small number of simulations that exist in the market, then the same market will grow and become healthier. If we are not up to the realistic expectations of the community or the community asks the impossible, then in the future we will see even more arcade driving games.

The community can support Assetto Corsa’s development in the long term, by buying our previous products now, and purchasing AC when it becomes available.

We really hope we’ve been able to transmit you the positive spirit that drives us to write these honest words and hopefully you will read our answers to your questions, from a different perspective than the usual “we want everything and we want it now”.

Anyone know what BMW’s are confirmed? I know 1M, Z4, e30 M3, e92 M3 are coming but is there more models confirmed?

  • Mark

    What an amazing picture.
it has some sort of improved “GT5 visual style” that I like a lot. With the evolved nkp physics along, will be an awesome package.

  • http://twitter.com/StarFoXySxv550 StarFoXySxv550

“the preview will be used to test the new DirectX 11 graphics engine on a variety of systems before releasing the first versions”
O.K, this is the excuse I was looking for to build the DX11 rig :) Mr Kunos, it will be a pleasure to help you, I’m sure

  • http://www.facebook.com/abioqaas Aslan Abioqa

Fully agree. I personally prefer the “GT visual style” but the PS3 is the limiting factor with GT5.

  • Mark

Indeed, but I still think PD did a good job with the graphics considering the ps3 6-year old hardware.

back on topic, imo AC is the best looking sim so far.

  • pez2k .

Quite interested in this tech preview idea, I wonder if it will be something available only to pre-purchasers. The big financial obstacle with games development is that you don’t have a product to sell until it’s 100% complete, but rF2 and pCARS both have found ways around that by giving access to earlier builds to anyone who puts in money (although the models do differ somewhat).

I wouldn’t be averse to AC doing the same, anything that helps secure the future of sim developers is a good thing. Even if it’s just a one-off build, I’m sure a lot of people would pay the money to drive an early preview.

The one thing I’m curious about is its effect on long-term sales, does it hurt product image sufficiently to damage sales (ie. rF2′s graphics in the first beta release), or does it simply mean that by launch the game already has an established community and knowledgebase to attract more players.

  • Marcus Caton

I’m worried about them going the DLC route.
because all base content will be free then multiplayer races will be rF1 style.
Unless they plan on adding some license structure like iRating/SR.
People moan about these things but there needs to be some ladder to make multiplayer rly worth it long term.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Craig-Cookson/1084484431 Craig Cookson

Shame there is no wet weather for the first release, but apart from that it sounds great.

  • Luke Russell

I think anyone who has used the iRacing multiplayer system will agree with you.

  • sargentjack86

God no. No stupid iRacing style system thank you. Decent multiplayer on it’s own is enough to carry a sim without the need for meaningless COD style rankings.

  • Matt Orr

When a company talks about how they – and us – need to have realistic expectations it just makes me want to buy their product when I’m already interested in it.

And unlike some “other” companies in our little subgenre, no need for the marketing BS and saying we have the best tire model EVAH!!!!1!!1!1! when you don’t use it worth a damn.

I do think what is said is fine though. I love racing in the rain, but I’ve done a grand total of about 10 races in the wet since 2006.

  • Anonymous

If u think of the netkar’s rain, which is brilliant(considering the ffb also) then u maybe realize that is “better” that we will not have rain in first release cause they seem to have physics (and other things of course) top prioritys!
I love that they give so much attention to the physics and dont waste time in other things that are not so much important that maybe are attractive to the masses..(im speaking in general, not saying that rain isnt importnat in a simulator of course..)
Personally,i cant wait to see how much better the physics and the ffb can be considering netkar’s.

  • Anonymous

I think they never confirm them in any other way than pictures, and I don’t think they gave a hint of any more of them. I hope they have the same type of licence as with Lotus as then we might get more and more of them after release. Anyway thanks to this being a fully customizable sim we’ll get more anyway! :)

  • Anonymous

Can’t wait to see what car will be in the Tech Demo and which track. This is going to be awesome. It might aswel will be free, as I think the most important for the devs will be to get as much data about how it works on any machine, not only people that are preordering. It’s a bit like giving out a demo of a product but it’s not yet finished and is more of a testing bed to check how it works. If it’s as great as it seems (I’d say 99% chance it will be ;) I’ll probably be spending a day or two just driving that tech demo :)

  • Anonymous

One of the Q&As mentioned they aren’t building in a license system, but the mod tools will be powerful enough to allow someone to design their own. They say they expect individual leagues to almost all be running something custom like that.

“Will there be a system that discourages wrecking? Such as the equivalent of iRacing’s iRating/SR?

There are going to be penalties for various driving behaviours. We are well aware of the iRacing rating system and we think it’s a great implementation and feature. We also noticed though that you can’t make everybody happy with such systems. Considering that we are an indie software house with small budget and resources, we must be very careful on where we spent those resources. That’s why we think it is better to give communities and users the ability to create the rating system that they prefer. Assetto Corsa will be moddable even for such advanced features, and so maybe with a bit of luck, some talented user might come out with the perfect rating system for everybody, or quite more probably, every league will create a personalized system that better fit their necessities.”

  • Ricoo

Good AI is not easy doing but it can help for sales.

Rain is not that important since for most people racing in rain is too difficult to be fun.

  • Matt Orr

Yea, look how well it’s worked for rFactor. Nothing like being on track with a guy who isn’t just slow, he’s 15 seconds off of the pace over the course of a minute and a half lap – in the Clio. Nothing like the turn 1 heroes either. No punishment or reason not to means people will.

Just love it when some newb picks the fastest car that he has zero hope of controlling, just because it’s fast. iRacing’s system really only affects those who either are unsafe or don’t feel like paying to move up, any decent driver can easily reach A, and if you can’t, well… You suck.

(“my sim is better than yours” and embraces the small number of simulations that exist in the market, then the same market will grow and become healthier.”)
Very wise words! People think when you criticize something on a sim comparing to another you are a sinner and you must go to hell. What thrives simracing is not words but support for that reason I believe we should support all sims out there. When I hear of people wanting their money back because rF2 is not perfect at the moment I feel sad because these people don’t understand it’s not about one sim it’s about our passion for racing and the empowerment we give the sim developers by purchasing a sim game. Although much of my time is spent with iRacing, I’ve purchased pCARS, SRW, rF1, rF2, Race 07, GTR Evolution, X-Motor Racing, Stock Car Brasil, Ferrary Academy, GTR2 and a few others. I don’t race them all some of them I’ve spent less than 5 mins with it but I still bought them all so in 10 years time our hobbie can be stronger than today. Fanboys are the ones who tell their friends not to buy certain sims because the one they are racing is the best and all other sucks, they are the ones who keep a lot of casual racers away for simracing because they tell them the sim they want to buy is not worth it’s better to stay “arcade”. I can say whatever I want from whatever sim because I own them all and payed money for everyone of them and that’s what makes the difference not my “sim is better than yours” but supporting as many sims out there as there are. I can’t wait to support AC as soon as they let me the same applies to GTR3. I may not play them all but they definitely deserve my support even when there’re flaws like so many like to point fingers at SRW but you know what they are the first to take it to iRacing and without competition our hobby won’t thrive and to have competition we need to support them.

  • Anonymous

    edit.

  • Skytrill .

Well they seem to be focusing on the most basic elements to nail them which is great. I fear with DLCs that they might take the EA path but hey.. these guys are passionate and they have bills to pay and no one is forcing us to buy everything.
It’s nice to see developers with humility toward other sims as well.. no corporate crap.

  • http://twitter.com/Touring_Pro TouringProSeries.com

Just really, really hoping that AC will be suitable for multiplayer. League management tools sound very, very interesting. NKP was wonderful in terms of FFb and physics, graphically, although not terrible and very poor netcode/predictive collisions let it down. Now we have the graphics (surely the FFB and physics will be good?!), we just need some good netcode (rFactor1 standard will do very nicely thankyou), and we are away.

Obviously multiplayers are a (not insignificant) minority, but all we ask is good netcode, including of course stable connections to the server. I understand it’s not easy, else we’d all be doing it, but I and all 400 drivers at TPS pray, as rFactor 2 is missing the ferry. :)

  • hoodge1

Can’t wait for this title. Dam so much good stuff coming out this year and mostly next. Hmm didn’t read his statement, but it sound like they are not going to go beta at all. Correct me if I’m wrong. Like the idea of version 1.0 and so on. Sounds a bit like maybe some ongoing builds to expand it and continue to evolve it like iRacing does which I love.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Pineapples/100001965191185 Joe Pineapples

Great to hear they’re still aiming for this year for the first release. Looking forward to trying the tech preview too.

  • Richard Hessels

I don´t see any message on this topic here to justify this long offtopic post.
Personally don´t give much about what others think about my hobby or my preferred sim.
As 95% of humanity has to laugh about grownup guys pretending to be pro race drivers with plastic steering wheels strapped on their desk.
The best sim is where you spend most of your time on.
For me that varies like my appetite.

  • Ricoo

What??? You didn’t buy NetKar Pro? lol

I’m impressed you bought X-Motor Racing tho. :)

How can you have wrong the name of one of the best sim, Game Stock Car? ;)

I agree with you post, nevertheless there is more and more studios on the sim market for a small custormer base, and I don’t know if everyone can make it.

With ISI, SMS, SimBin, Kunos, iRacing, Reiza, SimRaceWay, only to list the ”big” players, I doubt all will financially make it.

And it’s without taking into account Codemasters, that with F1 and GRID, capture a big part of the players that won’t try a true sim because they are happy with those titles.

More over the online community is split within so many titles that it’s becoming difficult to have enough people online.

But I like Kunos and I hope they will make it. :)

  • sargentjack86

The problem with the system is it breeds elitism amounst the games users as you have demonstrated here. For some reason you automatically assume that someone is a bad driver if they are not in A class???? I wouldn’t want to race with people like you. That’s why I don’t pay to race with morons.
Thankfully there will not be an iRating style ranking system in AC so hopefully all the elitist bellends will stay on iRacing. :-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000119964258 Tomas Beha

Thats why we got race-leagues :)

  • Anonymous

Don’t think he was saying everyone who is any good must be class A, only that no decent racer will be prevented from reaching class A unless they are truly reckless. I think Matt is more talking about the drivers who say ‘safety rating sucks because people keep hitting me’ who are actually the ones being reckless, and iRacing’s system does a good job of sorting them until they adjust their attitude towards safety.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000119964258 Tomas Beha

“we will not betray our philosophy to make it as realistic as possible,
even if we know that realistic simulations are not as potentially
lucrative as arcade and sim/arcade games.” – Thumbs up! ;-)

I didn’t buy Netkar Pro because their page never loaded where I live that’s the only reason I didn’t buy their title but I bought FVA :). I know it’s called Game Stock Car but I like it better Stock Car Brasil sound less like a “game” and more like a sim :).

that’s because you didn’t read what the developer had to say maybe you need to spend less time reading comments and more the news being shared brother.

  • Marco Hooghuis

He didn’t say that, he said can reach, not will reach.

  • Marco Hooghuis

It’s worth it, I built one this spring.

  • Marco Hooghuis

Really? So all the cod and battlefield users are really mature then pretending to be war heroes?
