Assetto Corsa – New Lotus 49 Previews

Kunos Simulazioni have released three new previews of their Assetto Corsa title, showing off the Lotus 49 Formula One car.

The previews show the car racing around the historic version of Monza, on of the laser-scanned tracks to be included in Assetto Corsa.

Assetto Corsa will be powered by a brand new DirectX 11 graphics engine and will come with advanced features such as blur & DOF. The title will offer extensive modding support as well as ten laser-scanned tracks and fully licensed cars as well as AI – A first for a Kunos title.

Assetto Corsa will be available in Q1 2013, the title will feature licensed cars from manufacturers such as Ferrari, BMW & Lotus. Assetto Corsa is set to be released in Q1 2013, a first “technology preview” demo is due to be out in a few weeks.

It was the sixties, you were lucky not to have branches fallen from the trees on the track..

I can’t wait to drive back to back both 49s in iRacing and AC this comparison might decide my future years in simracing. Sadly we are almost in February and no news on release date :(.

adding on that I want to at last drive at my favorite track on a laser scanned version i.e. Mugello.

I think driving this for the first time in AC will be like driving GPL for the first time many years a go. :-)

Yes, I’m definitely looking forward to the AC/iR comparison videos, though they’ll probably need to wait til iRacing releases the latest version of Silverstone. Don’t think AC has any of the other iRacing Euro tracks to compare on (Spa, Brands, Zolder, etc) unfortunately.

For the love of god, just let me have it already! :P

The technology preview is of vast interest, but after reading this I am more interested in the technology behind the time machine they used to laser scan the historic Monza track! ;)

The old banking at Monza is still there so they could actually scan it, rest of the track isn’t but the surface on banking is the most interesting anyway :P

Can’t say I wouldn’t like time machine too though

Why is the driver sitting so high? Looks really odd.

  • tazioquattro

Alarm for this apparently brilliant sim!

What´s the matter with the size of the driver?? did they put in a giant? Did not anybody notice that he is far too big? If the drivers heads were really so high above the roolbars top, the rollbar could never have worked! I can`t understand how such a trivial error can happen in such a qualified team, and why nobody has seen it before.

    Edit:
It was my first post, so I was a bit slow in preparing it.
So in the meantime Lee Mööre outlapped me.

    He’s just not a midget :)

I agree it looks a bit too high, but its actually not that far off. If the driver is tall it would look like that.

Here is a real pic of the 49 and a driver:

I wonder what that roll bar is for!?

  • http://twitter.com/TheRoggan Roger

    Yes, really!

I actually got the same feeling from rFactor 2 with the red 67 F1 car and the classic spa track, just an amazing experience!

Really looking forward to comparing GPL with AC as well as rF2!

Looks like the neck and head dimension are a bit off. Really the shoulders position are fine but the rest is looking odd. Apart from that i can’t wait to test AC.

  • speed1

One reason why i would like to suggest Kunos to use a non comparable car for the tech prewiew to be enshure a objective and unbiased rating result and test by the people.

Yeah, when you look at images driver height varies a lot. Hill always seems to be lower than everyone else. But yes, the vintage rollbar doesn’t look like it would be all that effective at protecting a driver…

Why haven’t they modelled the back of the armco? It wouldn’t add that many more polys and how it is now just looks weird.

Driver does look too high though when you compare to clark and hill. Neither look particularly small in photos but i can’t find heights anywhere.

In terms of that modern photo, the seating looks a bit more upright – mind you a lot of these old cars have had subtle changes so it’s hard to know.

Anyway, based on old pictures, looks a bit high here, iracing looks to have it about right.

One thing i do wonder is, have they taken the banking laser scan data as is or are they smoothing / modifying it slightly, because over 45 years it will no doubt have degraded a lot – surfaces don’t stay the same for that long, particularly when abandoned like this has been.

One thing scanning will give is the correct overall shape / curvature of the banking though, and also the land surround the track – well that of it that hasn’t changed. So that will be helpful :)

Looking forward to the sim though, nice to see old monza!

Wait, F1 cars from that era had functional safety features? :P

Anyway here another guy who’s way too big.

I guess they didn´t laser scan the driver body.

I get the same feeling I got when I saw previews of GPL a good 13 years ago.

Please take my f*cking money :(

The Lotus 49 is pretty good in PCARS as well.
