Assetto Corsa – Lotus 49 Previews

Kunos Simulazioni has revealed what was probably their worst-kept secret, showing off first previews of the Lotus 49.

Powered by a Ford Cosworth engine, the Lotus 49 was a groundbreaking Formula One car. It won it’s debut race, helped Graham Hill clinch the World Championship and continued winning in several versions until 1970.

Assetto Corsa will be powered by a brand new DirectX 11 graphics engine and will come with advanced features such as blur & DOF. The title will offer extensive modding support as well as ten laser-scanned tracks and fully licensed cars as well as AI – A first for a Kunos title.

Yummy stuff! The arms look rather short as seen in the 2nd picture.

So AC and iRacing will have a wingless 49, and pCARS will have wings on theirs. Who else is getting a 49 this year?

  • Marco Conti

Very nice. The only gripe I have is not with AC but in general with the fact that in order to really enjoy these cars or any vintage mod, you really need to have the entire field. Not just the Lotus.

Just yesterday I drove the 1975 mod on rFactor and it was a blast. The different shapes of the cars, some looking already like the late 70′s models and others still looking like the Lotus 49 style with aero grafted onto them. It was a lot nicer, even with the lower quality graphics and driving, than racing a field of identical vintage cars.
I realize it would be a nightmare to produce, but I would love to have a field of 60′s and 70′s F1 cars with all the brands represented.

Very nice….also a good excuse to have some historic tracks.
    *cough* Spa *cough*

I’m sure Simbin can come up with an excuse to put it in GTR3 :D

I can definitely see this happening in rF2.
Perhaps even in AC, if the game is as moddable as Kunos says it will be.

Damn it even looks better then pCars. Wasnt going to be expect that.
And with the considerration Netkar had great physics its gonna be the game to beat.

Stunning graphics! (and certainly stunning physics)

Historic cars were only reason to buy Rfactor 2. I can now forget Rfactor 2 without regret…

    Just beautiful

Look at the reflection in the mirror in the 4th shot, you can see the dam shadow of the car on the track. Insane levels of detail and the chrome looks sexy as hell.

This comes close to pCARS, really nice for such a small team.

    It’s officially licensed btw aswell

“ As a result of official licensing, Classic Team Lotus is making real life data and engineering documents available to us ”

evolution of Nkpro physics + beautiful dx11 graphics engine + good steering wheel setup = end of social life

  • http://www.facebook.com/Siggers Ross Siggers

Isn’t that more detrimental? You can see the shadow, but not the car.

Seeing those screens knowing that graphics is NOT the nr 1 priority of this title, wow.
I really hope they nail the sounds on it, i would like to hear some of the grunt you feel when watching Top Gear drive the Maserati 250F…

  • Anonymous

I don’t think we have seen the best yet either in terms of eye candy. They said a few weeks back they are only running within 75% of the engines graphic capability. Not sure if these are further along though, either way it’s very nice. Can’t wait to try the FFB

  • Big Ron

Beautiful shots. The article-shots do not look as good as the ones, melanieuk1. But graphic isn´t everything.

  • Anonymous

Social life is overrated anyways – bring it on :D

  • http://twitter.com/feels3 feels3

    What can I say…amazing shots ! :)

    This graphics with NkPro physics… A Dream…

  • Anonymous

It’s the shaders on the materials which is the biggest difference between AC and rF2 graphics. Leather looks like leather, plastic looks like plastic, chrome… well just look at it!

  • General Rush Hour

Makes you wonder why the steering wheel is centered..

  • http://twitter.com/Pascalwb Pascal

Amazing, best looking racing game ever. pCars looks like blury …. compare to this. Last pic, too much dof for me but nice. I hope for good MP, rF has best MP, so something like that. Beautiful textures. Can’t wait

  • Anonymous

I don’t understand? The wheel was centered?

  • Big Ron

It was a bit left-sides to give the driver more space for shifting

I was thinking pCars looked awesome, looked at this today, and was just blown away, never seen anything like that… the same kinda feeling when they showed the first shot of pCars with similar car to this. When I see this and then look back to the pCars screens, this just is a different league! I will for definite buy this, it probably will be a pick Assetto Corsa vs pCars for me, and then it’s such an easy pick, because I know every game Kunos done has just brilliant physics, why would this one be any different?!

  • http://twitter.com/kr1nz kr1nz

Very nice, I can’t wait to put my hands in this car! Keep working Kunos, good game play (I mean…good physics) and graphics (I mean, real life graphics!)  are a killing combination!

Depends on the year it seems based on some pics posted at Race Dept
    http://www.racedepartment.com/forum/threads/assetto-corsa-screenshots.44707/page-10
Look towards the bottom of the page.
So it can be in the center or off sided

  • Anonymous

It’s as if Kunos just knows exactly what we all want and is going to do it no matter the difficulty. I’m looking forward to AC so much I can’t even put it into words… Yes i can: fiuruewirojefjdkfnks

One the Kunos Devs also confirmed this and said it changed throughout the year race to race, not only the wheel. There are various pics around though showing it centered and off centre. I had never noticed before in all honesty as it’s only slightly and the majority of pics and videos do show it centered. I think the original was indeed off centre. Depends what version AC is simulating i spose. They also said that they are visiting Lotus soon to get some more stuff.

    just AMAZING.

  • jswarthoff

gfx are looking good but i also hope next gen sims will improve massively in the sound department…

i wanna hear some next gen audio fx :)

  • http://twitter.com/StarFoXySxv550 StarFoXySxv550

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing as Marco, where are the brabams , BRM’s etc. But it all comes down to licensing and ease of access in the end for the Devs I think. Lotus seem to be handing them out with a passion at the moment, so it must be easier to get those.

Looking at all the teams and engine manufacturers involved in the ’67 year this Lotus debuted I have the feeling it would be some feat to gather all the licenses, data and car models. Probably only a feat worth attempting if your game is solely based on that era and F1.

Like Justin said (Nice name btw) we’ll probably have to rely on modders for this for now, and the foreseeable future. I can’t see a game like GPL returning for some time, the broad appeal of the current games seem to be the trend that devs think (or know) sell the best. I think it would take a brave dev to invest only in a classic racing genre right now.

To be fair I think were lucky to even get these old F1 cars in the box, I would like to see some 80′s Group C and the Japanese Super Silhouettes’ of Group 5. The former is even forgotten about by all but modders it seems, this leaves me to cling to the the DRM modding team’s creations (Thanks guys) hoping they continue to do what they do.

Yeah.  I do think pCARS has the edge on graphics as they as so sharp, detailed and well textured. But AC also looks just amazing and has impressive lighting.
We are definately visually moving up a big notch this year.

Well, I can say that I’m just about ready for a video.

  • Luke Russell

It’s going to be hard to drive this car with only one hand on the wheel…

… If you know what I mean.

  • Anonymous

Yeahn I’ve mentioned it before, but I can’t think of a recent game that isn’t either semi-sim (Forza, GT5), based around one or two individual series (Race 07, etc), or grabbing just one or maybe two cars from each set of specifications.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Markus-Ott/100000878526131 Markus Ott

     rF has the best MP?
    You can’t be real…
rF is a MESS because of all the mods.

  • http://twitter.com/StarFoXySxv550 StarFoXySxv550

Yep it seems Simbin is our best hope (looking back). But they haven’t shown anything to say that GTR3 will continue that tradition yet. They are really good at providing the complete experience though (as much of the car list and tracks for a given series’ as possible)

  • Anonymous

But even there, they will probably get that because they focus on a few GT categories and not try to get stock cars, touring cars, prototypes and single seaters. If they were, I doubt they would have multiple makes either.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, so we will get to see the differences between the cars iRacing and Kunos scanned. Well, and how that differs from the one pCARS pretended to scan. :)

  • Peter Ball

maybe you should go for both Cas? I know I will. :)

  • Anonymous

I would, but I don’t want to waste money, still am not impressed by the physics of pCars (only my opinion, even though it’s getting better, I just can’t feel it, the end) but definitely an option, as both have been developed by people that love racing, and just try doing their best. The only problem is I come back to play NetKar sometimes just to get a bit of cool feeling it gives, while any graphics will be dated after a while and then we’ll have people saying stuff like about rf1 and rf2 now. The pCars usually drags by graphics, this does too, but for me a killer is that it is made by someone I trust in making brilliant and well felt physics. (I acknowledge the SMS in the past being involved in project such as GTR2, but with times, everything changes, everyone will say that when you try GTR2 and then pCars straight after that, you get a complete different driving expierience, it’s preference really.)
