Article: Digital Reality – F1 Simulators Revealed

Formula Ford racer and computer scientist Martin Galpin has had the chance to try the professional-grade simulator of a Formula One team and has written a very interesting article that was recently published in Racecar Engineering magazine.

His article touches on various subjects including both the hardware and software of the simulator that is used. Even though Martin isn’t allowed to reveal which team allowed him to test their simulator, we learn that this particular simulator uses a software that is based on Ruud van Gaal’s free simulation software Racer instead of rFactor Pro that is used by five other Formula One outfits.

Furthermore, the article reveals some interesting details such as the fact that this particular team uses their own, self-made, track models that are made from laser-scanning data provided by a third-party company that works for various F1 teams.

The full article can be checked out here and is well worth a read for every sim racer with an interest in professional simulators and Formula One.

“‘Over the years, we have evaluated most of the major sim racing titles,’ I am told. ‘Some too small, some too closed and some uncooperative. Another, more recent addition, is little more than hype,’ my host says with a wry smile.”

Hmm… Are you thinking of the same sim as I am???

  • David Wright

Yes -”i” think I am thinking about the same “racing” sim as you.

  • qawaza

    I can’t think no more….

  • RFactor Resources Rf

The truth has a great painting, but I think the pro rfactor is better, use at least five Formula 1 teams and this apparently only one

  • Dave

What has been a recent addition, hasnt been a new sim for a couple of years ?
Unless what he is referring to isn’t quite out yet.

  • David Wright

The term “more recent” is used.  What sim is more recent than rFactor, LFS, NetKar Pro?  The article is about training real racing drivers using a sim – what sim was hyped as a training aid for real drivers?

Its just his opinion of course :)

  • logos

    @Dave
I think, they are talking about pure (hardcore) racing simulation engines, such as iRacing, rFactor (gMotor2), NetKar Pro, VGP3, Racer, X-Motor Racing…

  • Dave

i dont know ,the biggest hyped racing title in f1 that the devs claim is sim based and not an arcade game is F1 by codemasters
The newest racing sim hyped as the best racing experience is iracing with latest addons but it isnt an F1 racing sim
Rfactor is a modding engine racing sim,it is true that the pro version is used by a number of f1 teams already but it has been out 5  years.

  • Karkai6

One tends to get lost in the Marketing hype that surrounds any product… I agree that endorsement by any real driver is inevitable for a sim such as iracing… But over a period of time, one never really can believe if a driver, who praises iracing as a training tool is endorsing iracing as part of a deal with them or as a real opinion… Then comes along one article like this which states someone from the F1 circle saying iracing is no more than hype… Then you start to wonder if all the drivers’ endorsements before this were true or whether they were paid for it…

P.S. I hope no one gets offended… I just thpught along these lines… Wud like to know what you think…

  • howiemotz@yahoo.com

Wow Dave you certainly misinterpreted the above. They don’t mention a F1 Sim. They’re talking about a  recent new Sim that hypes it self as a training tool for real race car drivers.  That could only be “iRacing”.  Which is adding F1 content by the way.   You really think they were talking about F1 2010 by Codemasters??   I don’t even think Codemasters has claimed it is a 100% Sim.

  • Dave

Well its hard to know exactly what game hes referring to ,iracing came out in 2008.
But if you start factoring in what the pr of each game claims that particular game to be id say it probably comes down to iracing and codies f1,iracing seems to get great reviews for all bar their pricing model.Personally i have played it so i dont know.
And as the guy whose quote we are discussing is part of an current F1 team that probably has had some dealings with Codemasters devs in the last year and a half its quite possible that he is referring to them.
They are claiming that it will be the most realistic F1 game ever ,Look even at what they say about their tire model .

  • Karkai6

And of course, I might be wrong, Dave s right and he may really be referring to Codies :)

IMO, professional racing teams wouldn’t be interested in the mainstream racing games, for their simulators. They look for a sim racing engines, which are suitable for their simulation hardware and software.

Even if we assume that mainstream titles like F1 2010, GT5, Forza3 are ‘hardcore’ sims (which is highly doubtful), it would be pretty difficult to incorporate such games to the specific software and hardware needs, these racing teams have.

Neither Codemasters, nor PD, nor Microsoft Games, etc. produce sim racing engines – they are gaming studios and produce games. Their market is not the professional racing teams. They cannot offer the needed software, to these racing teams.

I think, it’s pretty obvious what racing sim/service this F1 guy is referring to. ;)

  • Dave

Dosent really matter as we dont know the agenda of the guy whose quote we are discussing either.
And we have F1 test drivers praising F1 the game ,well id really like to see the unedited versions of those shoots.
The only truth ive come to respect it the saying
Believe nothing of what you read and even less of what you hear.
Ps i agree with you point Karkai6 its impossible to know whos praising for money or for genuine belief of a product.

  • jux

No, they do not talk about a “sim that hypes itself as a training tool”. Where did you get that idea from? They just talk about a recent sim, that’s all.

  • logos

Oops, sorry for the multiple posts. Maybe some software bug.

Montoya, please delete the unnecessary posts, if you like. :)

  • RJC_pt

would say the team is virgin, judging by the simulator Wirth Research as…..

  • Pleb

“The term “more recent” is used.  What sim is more recent than rFactor, LFS, NetKar Pro? ”

We don’t know how recent ‘recent’ is.  He dosn’t state that its post rfactor, et al.

Secondly, I can’t see iRacings wealth of real-world racers using it as their training tool of choice if it was ‘little more than hype’.

My guess is hes having a jab at the recent titles such as NFS/CM F1 2010 which are marketing themselves as sims when we all know they are not in the realm of being proper training tools.

If anything the ‘some too closed’  comment seems more likly for iRacing, as its not mod-able (which is what these teams do to the titles).

  • f0d

The article mentions “leading Formula One team”. I haven’t seen Virgin do much leading this year…

  • Turkey :D

If only a non disclosed F1 team would release their track models :D

  • marc1111

This is certainly not an unbiased piece of “journalism.” I am simply noting that the author goes to great lengths to mention no other currently existing sim besides rFactor, and selectively chooses quotes from his host to take shots at what is obviously iRacing.  After reading his prior article of modeling the formula ford in which he gave a glowing review of rFactor, I take the opinionated nature of comments regarding sims in this article with a grain of salt.  :/

You would think with all that money, they could come up with a better triple screen setup. Surely they could find an arc’d screen, or 3 monitors with thinner rims because there is a lot of view blocked out by the white parts.

  • Philip Oakley

This isn’t the image that they were driving with in the article, it’s a piece of 3D concept art.
