Add Boxed Simbin Classics To Steam – How To

For a while now, Simbin has been re-releasing most of their old favorites to Steam as GTR2 is the only of their titles not available to buy on the platform.

While new buyers can enjoy the comfort of having the title in Steam from the start, Simbin now offers the same to all owners of the boxed versions of GTR, GTR2 & GT Legends.

All owners of existing Simbin titles have to do is obtain the multiplayer lobby code that came with their title. In Steam head over to Games > Activate a product on Steam and follow the prompt until you`re asked to enter a code.

Now, simply enter the multiplayer lobby code without the dashes and the title will be added to Steam, meaning you can now play without having to worry about the old discs.

However, there seem to be limitations regarding GTR2 as not all content of the retail version is being transferred over. This is probably the same issue that prevents Simbin from selling GTR2 on Steam so far.

    What content is missing?

    • DDD II

Not 100 percent sure but I think Porsche’s may be out, whatever is missing it is content that they no long have a license for. I won’t have time to try out for a bit but I am sure you will get an actual answer soon :)

      • rob

        Bad news about Porsche.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Siggers Ross Siggers

looks like porsche and ferrari :/

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

Well, I just took a look side by side as I have a spare GTR2 “clean” install on standby at all times and I don’t see any cars missing. Unless somehow they don’t show in game as I haven’t fired it up yet (still downloading GTL) but I don’t see anything obviously missing game file wise.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

I also just checked and they both are 1.54 GB so…I dunno??

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

Okay fired it up and yeah, Porsche and Ferrari don’t show. The files are there so I wonder how one would enable them?? Hmmm…….ideas………Heh.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

I’ve narrowed it to the exe file.

  • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

I just tried it with GTL, downloading as I type this. Works fine, just leave the hyphens out. Oops! haha.

  • http://twitter.com/3Alessio7Milan Alessio

Make sure it’s multiplayer key, I tried the CD key with GTL and it wouldn’t let me through :/

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

Yes. I tried the Starforce key and it didn’t work so tried the multiplayer and it did and now I look again above see it said that. Also, don’t forget to leave the dashes out.Cheers.

      • http://twitter.com/GeraArg Gerardo

The GTL key works fine but the GTR2 key don’t work :S

      • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

Do you have the game of the Year edition? That comes with both GTL and GTR2? Mine has 3 keys, one the Starforce and two others, the middle one for GTL and the top one for GTR2. I typed it in with no hyphens (dashes) and in both cases it worked. maybe try it a few times?

      • http://twitter.com/GeraArg Gerardo

No, I have the CD’s version of GTL (3CD’s impressive :O) and the DVD version of GTR2. :)

      • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

That’s how mine is. Did they come together? Or GTL and GTR2 separately? I wish I could be more helpful.

  • DDD II

    Thanks Simbin!

    • DDD II

and thanks everyone for all the follow up info in the thread, Merry Christmas to everyone.

Just activated GTR, GTL and GTR². ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/john.voncannon.9 John Voncannon

Where is the multiplayer code for GTR? I have the CD case and manual, and the only code I see is a CD Key on the CD insert. It did not work on Steam. I was successful with GTR2 and GTL.

    • http://www.facebook.com/scott.holdsworth.33 Scott Holdsworth

Hi John, You should have a credit card sized online activation card in your game box, if its missing you may need to contact Simbin.
      Regards
      Scott.

      • http://www.facebook.com/john.voncannon.9 John Voncannon

Scott, thank you! My game box is long gone along with the activation card. I’ve emailed Simbin with a photo of what I have (CD key and manual). Hope that works.

      • http://www.facebook.com/scott.holdsworth.33 Scott Holdsworth

Cool….I’m sure Simbin will sort it out for you bud ;-)

      • http://www.facebook.com/john.voncannon.9 John Voncannon

They did and were very quick about it. I now have GTR activated on Steam. Kudos to their team!

Just tried it for my GTR 2 and it works!

  • http://www.facebook.com/ethan.bass.750 Ethan Bass

So does this mean we use Steam to play these games online now?

    • http://www.facebook.com/Siggers Ross Siggers

not at all. Only a select few games actually use steam to power online gaming, but if it’s steam you’re activating it on, you will have to have steam running in order to play it. My two cents, that’s no biggie, I love steam. Origin on the other hand is vile and disgusting xD

      • http://www.facebook.com/ethan.bass.750 Ethan Bass

Thanks for the reply. Just wondering because some people I know want to to a LeMan style league. They suggested doing it with rFactor, but GTR and GTR2 have changeable weather where rFactor to my knowledge only has dry races. So it’s Steam we use to fire up the game, no longer needing the disc, but using the original dedicated servers?

      • http://www.facebook.com/Siggers Ross Siggers

        correct :)

  • traind

I have a problem with my disc version of GTL as the starforce thing won’t run with my operating system. Will this approach allow me to skip that and now play GTL?

    • Dave Robinson

I am running Vista 64bit and had no problems running GTL using the Steam version. Beats the hell out of taking all those photos and sending then to Simbin or whoever it is.

      • Marco Hooghuis

I did that and I found it pretty easy.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

      Yes.

  • http://profiles.google.com/conticreative Marco Conti

    Worked like a charm.
Question: What is the difference between GTR1 and GTR2 (or GTR and GTR2, of course)?
I was under the impression that GTR2 had all the content that was in the original GTR and then some, but I never actually made sure. Would it be worth it if you already have GTR2?

    • Richard Hessels

GTR1 is running on a older version of the gMotor engine.
Also the physics & content got a major update.

    • Marco Hooghuis

GTR features the 2003 FIA GT season and GTR2 adds the 2004 season, some (fantasy) championships and a driving school to that. I have both (bought 1 before 2 was out) and I’d say stick to GTR2.

      • Mario Strada

Thanks guys, I was just wondering if I was missing out on anything. Doesn’t sound like it.
The GTR2/GTL combo pack was my intro to PC Simracing. I had no idea what a bargain I was buying at the time.

  • http://profiles.google.com/conticreative Marco Conti

This just downed on me and I hope I didn’t move too soon… Will we still be able to launch our copies of GTL and GTR2 without having to start Steam? Mine are heavily modded and I have several copies for the different leagues I race.

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

Your current installs will be fine. These versions install into the Steam folder.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

So there will be 2 sets of installs of these games then ? Taking up twice as much disk space ?

      • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

Yes. it’s a separate install, same as if you added any new game. Myself, I already have 4 other GTL installs so it’s not an issue.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

OK thanks. I’ll skip this then and save the HDD space.

      • http://s1.zetaboards.com/SimSkinsByDen/index/ PetrolheadDen

No problem. So far I see no difference in it other than being installed in Steam. I been copying slowly mods etc (my main install has all tracks modded in AIW and GDB files and uses the REALmod files in TC65, etc.) to see if anything is different and see nothing which is good news actually. If you get my meaning.

      • http://racingrenders.com/ F1Racer

Yep. Although I have all of those sims as originals, naturally, I’m pretty sure I have noCD exe’s for all of them (with the possible exception of GTL – not sure on that one). So I’m ok when it comes to not putting CD’s in to play.

  • http://profiles.google.com/conticreative Marco Conti

I just drove a Ferrari in GTR2 Steam. Except that it was a very low resolution job and I accessed it because I tried the Driving School. The Ferrari was the DS car for Imola so they had to put it in, but it has no livery and very low res interior.

The strange thing is that in the trailer for GTR1 there are Ferrari and Porches among the featured cars. Also, they did get the license back then for those cars and they should still be valid. It is a reissue of sort.

So this only works for boxed versions? I have a GTL Version with a key that cost me 5 Euros or so, and the key doesn’t work with Steam.

    • Anonymous

Is yours the digital version from RaceRoom? If it is, the key should activate in Steam. Contact the helpdesk if that’s the case and we’ll get it sorted for you.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Markus-Ott/100000878526131 Markus Ott

        Nope, it’s on a DVD.
